Castlevania is an American adult animated action television series created and written by Warren Ellis for Netflix, and is produced by Frederator Studios' Kevin Kolde and Fred Seibert[1] and Shankar Animation's Adi Shankar. Based on the Japanese video game series of the same name by Konami, the first two seasons adapt the 1989 entry Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and follow Trevor Belmont, Alucard and Sypha Belnades as they defend the nation of Wallachia from Dracula and his minions. Additionally, characters and elements from the 2005 entry Castlevania: Curse of Darkness are featured beginning in the second season, and Alucard's backstory is drawn from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The art style is heavily influenced by Japanese animation and Ayami Kojima's artwork.
Castlevania was originally planned as a film, developed by producer Kevin Kolde and his company Project 51. He joined Frederator Studios in 2005, and founder Fred Seibert agreed to produce the project there. They contracted a script with writer Warren Ellis in 2007. The project entered development hell until about 2015, and it was picked up by streaming service Netflix. Powerhouse Animation Studios joined the team and production commenced. The production team includes staff members who worked in the Japanese anime industry.
The series premiered on Netflix on July 7, 2017, and was renewed for an expanded second season of eight episodes on the same day; the second season premiered on October 26, 2018. A ten-episode third season was greenlit by Netflix and released on March 5, 2020. The series ended with the release of its fourth season on May 13, 2021. The series received critical acclaim, with praise for its visuals, animation, voice acting, action sequences, characterization, themes, and writing, although the pacing, particularly of the third and fourth seasons, garnered a polarized response.
A follow-up series in the Castlevania setting, Castlevania: Nocturne, premiered on Netflix on September 28, 2023. The series focuses on Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor and Sypha, and Maria Renard during the French Revolution, with James Callis reprising his role as Alucard.[2]
I'm glad they made Sypha a good close range magic user. You don't see that often in media.
I love watching her fight. The sheer creativity behind her spells too. The animators did a fantastic job here.

The magic she was using close up was supposed to be ranged too, she just got creative. Wish we had more magic in games that would let us get creative in a tight spot.

Especially after seeing Season 3 I love how Sypha disposed of Cho with almost contemptuous ease. Cho spent centuries toying with humans, even depriving those she fought of an honorable death -- can't think of a better way for her to go out than getting casually squashed like a bug by someone who never had to care about the monster she was.
Plus you can atribute her loss to an unfavourable type matchup. I can't comfortably call her a pushover since her greatest asset of being impervious to melee was addressed with a really specific ice ability
we don't know for sure she is dead. like you said, she had relevance in season 3 so there is still a chance that she survived having her mist turned to ice and shattered.

@@dannyrank123 Pretty sure she dead. Mist is cooled water vapor, and water vapor, after being frozen and thawed, turns into just straight up water. Even if she was "still alive", she'd no longer have the ethereal control over her body she once did, effectively rendering her a useless puddle unable to reform itself for eternity.
And that's if we just assume she had any chance of surviving the full-blown ice attack, which being in a vapor-form at the time likely removed any resistance to.

She's the 'boss killer', so of course they got her collecting skulls.
I love how in this scene the vampire generals are all incredibly talented, but are all picked off one by one because they don't work together, but fight as individuals. Just that bit in the end where the indian vampire general dodges the whip, gets her comrade killed & herself killed - great fight choreography
And what makes it better is it is made pretty clear throughout the season that they aren't all that cooperative. Dracula pointed it out often and it took Godbrand to spur them into action to go on a feeding frenzy. Dracula didn't have the best court on his side when he decided to go all out war against the human race.
Carmilla shows herself to be an adept leader and strategist, but I don't see her lasting long in a fight. Her sisters, on the other hand, might be the real muscle. (Besides the actual muscle)

I suppose there's an element of choosing the right people for the job. You can see at the start Dracula's war council are looking pretty happy to see him until he starts rambling about exterminating humanity and trusting the human forgemasters. If even Godbrand could see this would end badly for the Vampires, win or lose, it's unlikely all of the other Vampires were going to put their self-interest above their loyalty to Dracula. I imagine if you had happy Dracula leading all of the War Council, they would be able to work together, as they all respect Dracula at least. But in Dracula's absence and with a war goal they don't like, it seems scheming is inevitable.
And honestly, I think Dracula also knew this, and was hoping that by assembling all the world's most dangerous vampires in one place and giving them a motive to betray him, he would finally have enemies powerful enough to kill him. So maybe the war council wasn't for wiping out humanity, but for defeating Dracula? He certainly doesn't seem to care that his court is openly questioning him anymore, and Alucard even suspects Dracula is just trying to commit suicide by proxy.
When it comes to Carmilla, she is competent but I would say she just got really lucky!
She's got lots of flaws which hold her back. She is manipulative, but not actually that good at manipulating people - notably, the only two people she tries manipulating are the two people she is stronger than (Godbrand & Hector). She doesn't try manipulating Isaac or Vampire Lords like Cho because they aren't as simple as Godbrand or naive as Hector, and if they didn't join her plot there is a high chance they would kill her.
She is a competent strategist but isn't that good at strategy either. She committed to the assault on Dracula's castle, but failed to deal with the other FIVE Vampire Generals in the War Council, any one of which could have defeated her. She didn't get Isaac on her side, which meant that half of the night creatures would remain loyal to Dracula. Worst of all, she holds her enemies in contempt and doesn't bother to actually learn what their capabilities are. She doesn't consider humans to be threats at all and so has complete blindspots on Hector, Isaac, Trevor & Sypha, so has no plans for how to deal with these powerful humans. She considered Dracula to be a weak old Vampire, not aware that even in his weakened state he could have killed everyone in the War Council.
If Carmilla had actually set foot in Dracula's castle - she had no way of dealing with the Vampire Council, the Vampire Hunters or the Big Boss Vampire himself. The crowning achievement is abusing Hector to give him plenty of motives to betray her, but at least she has Lenore to cover for her weaknesses there. Assuming Lenore doesn't overthrow Carmilla.
She's a bit of an impulsive mainiac, which is why we love her, but by S1 it's clear she's beginning to get too big for her boots and S4 is no doubt going to end with her biting off more than she can chew ;D
@@noaccount4 I don't see Carmilla being stronger than Godbrand. She knocked him down, yeah, but she did it when he wasn't looking. But that just fits within her schtick. Catching her enemies flat-footed. She is very much a rogueish type and that's not against her. You fight with what you have. Not all battles are won by muscle alone.

I couldn't agree more. She's not overdone. She's not a damsel in distress She has tangible contributions to the story. She's a badass. Why can't more anime's with male main characters do this!?

I like how it is clear that Sylpa's battle style changes over the seasons, when here she is so static and almost immobile, but by season 4 she is fire-ice-lightning jumps all over the place and combines elements like nothing.
And her opponents get dumber too

I love how they handle the battles in this show. Especially Trevor and Sypha. Him weaving cat's cradles of death with the Vampire Killer and her using her magic so creatively is just awesome.
And Alucard uses all his Symphony of the Night skills and souls... yeah, love that too...

This is what I want from my Anime. Fast and fluid action. Straight to the point. Not a bunch of technical inner-monologing about the fight. But this is why Castlevania works. It has the sensibilities of American storytelling within the strengths of an Anime
That is exactly how I feel about it. The pacing is just right without the unneeded filler and exposition. Everything flows nicely and the fighting choreography is amazing!
Yup. Anime can be so drawn out. One slash of a sword could run one episode of flashbacks before it hits

the technical part is the best, and it's present also in castlevania, the fights do not ends for some friendship bullshit, the only difference is that the powers are simple and straightforward, try watching a hxh fight without some explanation
The difference is here the hype comes from “we’re finally at the big fight! Look at them all working together!”
Some of the best anime fights with significant dialogue are so good because of the dialogue. Seeing two characters form a connection as the fight and to have their desire and goal more clear is exciting. Rengoku vs. Akaza is one of the best anime fights. It’s dialogue heavy, but that adds to the fight because it allows the two to develop a “relationship” (for lack of better word) while the fight is happening. It turns it from “you’re a generic demon and I’m the good guy” into something more personal. You start to almost like Akaza and you understand more about Rengoku.

I just LOVE how magic is used in this series. No more big blocks of slow ice or slow fireballs. Look at how creative they used the ice-magic for example. Can't explain how much I love it.

At a 5th level casting of the spell Burning Hands, it'd deal 7d6 (average of 24) fire damage. Assuming the Vampire was damaged enough, he could've easily been finished off by that damage if he failed a save. However, if she put her strongest into that spell, it'd actually be 10d6 (average of 30) fire damage instead, with the potential high roll of up to 60 damage would be more than enough even if the Vampire was just under half health (and failed the save). With Empowered Spell Metamagic she could increase the chances of the dice rolled are higher than average. This would mean she could even do said metamagic with the 7d6 instead, as she likely wouldn't use much higher than 5th on what isn't the final encounter.

Well it is a cursed/divine weappn that was forge through alchemy with a vampire's soul bound and fused to it. Also wait ti'll simon belmont get's a hold of it he'll turn it into flaming ball and chain.
Everybody cries at the end with "I'm killing my boy", but I cried the first time here.
Why? Because I'm a huge game fan, and have been hoping for an actually fantastic game-based series/movie for ages. Nothing has come as far to doing that than this show has, and experiencing this finale with the characters you care about, stakes you care about, fantastic animation and such good music really did me in on how good this is, and it actually brought me tears of joy.
Also sidenote, Sypha just rocks. A strong and likable female character without being on the nose with a female empowerment message. Instantly more effective and enjoyable when she's simply there.
I feel she was a bit obnoxious in the 3rd season, but that's just my reaction to some choices she made, and it was few and far between. Just minor things that made her seem like a bi***y girlfriend. Those reactions are biased from my own dating history, though. (I felt that Season 3 was a bit of a dialogue slog... for an animated series, at least.) Don't get me wrong, I like the whole show overall.
By Season 4, she was back to being fun, kick-ass Sypha from the first two seasons.
This is still probably the best Western video game adaptation to date. With well-crafted fan service that actually has a point, and affects the story and plot.
The folks who made it are fans, themselves, and that love shows through.
Now, after watching The Last of Us (so far,) I take back my comment about the best Western game adaptation. I still consider castlevania a triumph, and am awaiting the spin-offs and sequels.

The little details sometimes, man...the mist vampire sporting that snarky little grin as she avoids having her head bisected.
If this series keeps on as well as it has so far, I could watch 20 seasons.
My only gripe with this is that I wanted to see more of the mist vampire. She looks cool AF but didn't even get any lines.
@catty yoo Carmilla referred to the other women among the vampire lords when talking to Godbrand... "Women", plural... Other than Carmilla herself and the (Indian?) vampiress in blue dress that is killed by Alucard, the only other who could be female was the Chinese/Japanese one (Mist). Unless I'm forgetting someone.

From the flashback in Ssn 3, I gathered Cho wasn't a talker. She let her silence and actions do the communicating, which can be a tool of terror of a vampire. Nice thing about Carmilla, Godbrand, and Dracula is you can hear them coming. If you don't see Cho coming, you won't know she's there until she makes you aware.
Seeing how they handled Dracula's army, along with his generals and some of Carmilla's soldiers only to struggle against the man himself.
Dracula really was a nightmare
And let's add that this Dracula is a broken man who starved himself
He is nowhere near as strong as he'd normally be yet he overpowered the Trio. A True Nightmare indeed.
I love how sypha is limited to 3 elements but is so creative with them especially the ice although her fight scenes get a little repetitive sometimes most times its so satisfying

Sypha is so awesome...her fight scenes are always a delight, and best of all, she is really powerful too. So is it that her magic revolve around fire and ice elements? I recall her using a bit of wind magic in season 1...but fire and ice seem to be her specialty. It so happens to be Dracula goto elements in the Lord of Shadows games too.
She used wind to cushion Trevor being tossed at her by Dracula

i agree, most animes specialy shonen animes need hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of episodes (and endless filler) just to get the same level of impact in both story and characters that this series made in a very few episodes.

This is by far the best anime fight scene I have seen in a very long time. It literally gave me chills when Alucard used his wolf transformation. Also Trevor’s mad whip skills and Sypha’s magic were so kinetic. Must have watched over 30 times now 🦇👻

I adore how terrifying Sypha's magic is. The idea of her just conjuring up a razor-thin sheet of ice to slice someone apart is amazing.
I also love how Trevor's fighting style reminds me of Joseph Joestar during Part 2 where he'd ensnare Eisidisi with the hamon scarf's threads. You fight Belmont and you think he's just missing and whipping about with his chainwhip, but nah, he lays a carefully placed trap that completely ensnares you.
razor-thin sheet of ice will never work actually. it doesn't have the strength to cut anything let alone a vampire.

I haven't ever played much of any of the games, but I know their history and mythos, and for some reason I instantly recognized the video-game fighting music. What a icon of history.
Sypha is seriously underrated & probably the most powerful of them all. She single handedly killed three generals, saved all their asses and even transported a bloody castle.

Bear in mind that canonically, in the end, it's magic users who ultimately destroy Dracula. Not belmonts, not Alucard - Sorcerer's.

The effort they put into making Trevor demonstrate demonstrate actual whip TECHNIQUE is godlike. He has an entire style for close range! He can freestyle a kick into turning the whip into bolos! This is IMMACULATE.
Tbh the way magic is done in this series I like alot.. its like bending mixed with well handsigns/gylphs Id say?
Trevor with that whip is really something else, his strategies and cleverness are something on an entirely new level. Now I know why only the Belmont Clan can use the Vampire Killer whip.

Simple, they licensed it to people who actually care. The big wigs at Konami are happy, because they get positive PR, money and brand recognition for the very much still active gambling machines, and all they had to do was sign a piece of paper allowing someone to use their IP and it probably had a clause where if the person fucked it up, Konami gets paid anyways. Win/win

This may sound of topic, but this is everything that "The last Jedi"-throneroom battle should have been :
-An actual reason why this battle takes place
-pretty sweet opening
-Kickass music that is pleasing to the fans
-each hero gets in a decent kill count and at least 1 general caracter-kill
-some pretty sweet teamwork
bert bvdemier yeah it’s really nice too how they build up drac to be a super strong vamp and his fight actually reflects that with them being no match. Unlike some Star Wars characters, I’m looking at you snoke.
And it just so happens that Sypha, unlike Rey, is not a Mary Sue. She is immensely powerful, but she gets hurt several times and needs rescuing (Trevor saved her from the Cyclops). She is not always in the right either and both men by her side aren't degraded or humiliated in her presence. And she gets completely overmatched by Dracula and only Alucard could truly even stand a chance.

I love this scene. If you noticed, all three can hold their own in one on one combat. However, when they team up, they're unstoppable! Sypha controlling the ice with her fingers?!? Someone on the animation team must love Yamcha from the Dragonball series as Yamcha can control ki blasts with his fingers.

2:16 - 2:24 I love how they act in this scene. They aren't phased. They show confidence in their abilities and parts 1 and 2 of this fight show they can quickly shape their abilities to complement each other. They are an extremely effective unit.

This is easily one of my favourite all time animated fight scenes. Maybe one of my favourite fight scenes, full stop.
It establishes the stakes before they even start, with the characters in a state of determined dread. They hash together a plan just before stepping in, signifying the relationship that had grown between them during the story.
Power levels and skills have already been displayed by this point. We know that the guard vampires are powerful but not at the level of the vampire rulers. The rulers display their mastery by countering many of the attacks our heroes throw at them, escalating the conflict naturally. The guards are dispatched with ease, but the vampire lords show skill, cunning and prescience in the fight.
There is a victory, yes, but it wasn't easy and it's just the beginning. The real fight hasn't even begun yet.
I love how all the characters, both the heroes and villains, display their various (very cool) skills during the fight, we get to see what each subject brings to the fray.
My favourite moment has to be the giant white wolf welding a flying sword. I mean, come on.
9/10.

As an Indian I was super psyched to see Indian Vampires were introduced. Sadly they weren't given a backstory or a prologue details unlike japanese vampire Cho's backstory in Season 3. I wish Netflix had made a spin off about the Vampire Generals and their lore.
As Indians have many folk tales of vampires in both northern indian cultures and southern indian cultures.
I wonder how much of a difference it would have been if Godbrand and Carmilla had been there.

My prediction is that in season 3 Isaac will kill Carmilla and after that he will become to Zead (a.k.a Death)
Godbrand would've been the first to die. Carmilla would have escaped, she's too clever to fight to the death when outmatched.
Godbrand would have gotten annihilated and Carmilla would have gotten wrecked as well if she chose to fight.
Following the story of the game and manga Isaac and Hector were in, it's likely Hector will stop Isaac once
Carmilla is stopped somehow.

My anticipation and joy were then unexpectedly satisfied by what is arguably the best anime fight I'll ever see as long as I live.😈 If you have doubts about my claim, put your minds at ease. Even till this day, the castle battle gets me hype/pumped. The music is of course bloody tears. Both the battle and music together was done so godlike, i look at it all the time.

This just makes me want "Castlevania 1999" even more. Alucard fought alongside Julius Belmont, a shrine priest from Japan, and a currently unknown descendant of Sypha Belnades (not Yoko) in the final battle. Imagine the Dracula crisis of Transylvania here (1476) and Castlevania Bloodlines (1917), but on a world-wide scale. Wouldn't it be beyond epic seeing that with "Heart of Fire" or "Simon's Theme" playing?

I would love to see this. The incident was talked about, but never covered. The Demon Castle War was supposedly groundbreaking enough that the Japanese Self-Defense Forces were ready to send a scout unit into the castle in 2035. Granted, they all died but Hammer, but still. The governments of the world not only knew, but they were ready. It implies that if Vampires had been a secret from the general public before, they weren't, any more. That and Soma's casual reaction to it all.
