No joke, my first exposure to NES games was in some 1000 in 1 trash plug & play from a Dollar General. So my enjoyment of retro games can be directly credited to this sort of trash.

I got a Sega Genesis with about 15 games from a garage sale in 1999 for $20. I also had my brother's used PS1 and games he gave to me when he bought a PS2. That was my experience to videogames. @@warbossgegguz679

One of my earliest gaming memories was my dad dragging out this ancient pre-NES game console from his childhood. I don't remember the name but it had pitchforks instead of RCA connectors. I feel like even that was probably still more fun than this

this is probably one of my favorite plug and plagues just because of how bizarre it is. watched it for the millionth time last night and kept asking myself "where did they get this music? why are the loops so short? why do they keep reusing audio and making the loops even more short? why do the games look like they're at -1080p?" plus it spawned some great vinny laughs. bean eater is legendary.

So one of my earliest childhood memories is being shit scared of our Namco plug and play, a pac man one I think, not sure why, but it always had this “aura” of unsettling eerieness to it, maybe it was our shitty TV, the crackly quiet distorted sound, the constant buzzing of the connection cable, the wobbly visuals that faded in and out of the screen, no idea - but I’ve been watching vinny for over 8 years now and out of all the Plug & Play streams this one was the closest thing to that unsettling atmosphere, this whole consoles look and sound, the weird music, the distorting noises, it’s fucking awful, some weird deeply ingrained fear fucking awoke during the stream, thanks Vinny for awakening my childhood flight or fight response again after all these years 🤣👍
I should also add, I feel like these things are just inherently weird, not knowing where they came from, who made the games, where the music or sounds are from (although granted a lot of them are ripped assets) it’s just one big weird feverdream
Just a bad video cable. The solder on the cable to plug connection was bad. Too much use or rough handling would crack it. I had an Atari one that did the same thing. I had to rubber band the cord at a sharp kink upward in order to get it to connect. They used thin shitty wiring and not a high quality cable.
The visuals are the most consistently offensive thing about these things. They don't know how to properly work with whatever low-Bit engine they use, so they just draw whatever and let it get Bit Crushed to fuck, making it look like the nightmares I had after my Covid shot.
This one did the same with Audio, "Who cares if it sounds like the music is coming from deep in someone's colon? Just toss it in there and let the engine figure it out!"
I think these are actual high-res (relative to NES') sprites, no "bit crushing" involved here. The "engine" looks like modified NES hardware, hence the games' logic being the same as the original.
I recall seeing bootleg Famicom consoles which were equipped with MIDI chips and/or better graphic hardware. The improved hardware was only utilized in a few original games developed specifically for those Frankenstein consoles which makes this plug'n'play an enigma. The amount of games modified to take advantage of its capabilities is huge!
I've done a bit of research and this plug'n'play seems to be a VTxxx-type of a Famiclone.
@@zakkuth7447 yeah iirc these literally are just nes's but with better colour and memory or something. I've looked at the cutting room floor a bit and they document the hardware that these plug and plays use.
@@ayoraster2970 honestly, I can see why did the Chinese manufacturers take that route. They'd already put the entire Famicom on a single chip. It makes sense to upgrade that instead of developing a new platform from scratch (this is the 00's we're talking about so it was especially hard). The hardware would retain its cheap price that way and they would gain access to a solid game library to work with.
That being said, I've never heard that plug'n'plays were being documented on TCRF, gotta check that out ig

I remember some kind of program that let you replace NES graphics with custom ones, and I wonder if a similar technology was applied here to easily reskin official games into games at home.
I'm 95% sure this thing's still directly using NES-derivative hardware. Some NES-on-a-chip forms have been known to have replaced graphics and sound hardware, that """"""improves"""""" the output of the games included (note the airquotes). The CPU and gamecode itself is unchanged, but what draws to the screen itself has been changed, along with the graphics and musical in each game's data.
Yeah it is, most of the games here are VT368 hacks of classic NES games by Cube Tech - VT368 being an NES-on-a-chip done by VR Technologies with all the improvements you mentioned. It looks like the console itself is running on VT369 instead which is why most of the games are all sped up.
The bootleg Phil Collins ties it all together.
