Thank you for explaining your reasoning for how you are painting as you go along and sharing your knowledge!

Thanks! I’m considering getting the Neocolor 2’s, so great demonstration.

Mark - "Thank you" for this extremely insightful video. As you can imagine, there's a lot of content creators our there. It's just a matter of finding one that "speaks" to you. I guess I've finally found a video that helps me understand "how" to use Caran d'Ache Neocolor II water-soluble pastels. I do hope you find the time to create more videos. In particular, I liked your methodical approach in how you explained various basic concepts. I also enjoyed your voice intonation, which I think is particularly important for this medium. I'll definitely subscribe in the hope to see more from you in the future.

      thoughtdujour you are very welcome.
I only post to TH-cam infrequently, to be honest. Most of my videos are posted to a closed system for my students. We’ve got quite a lot of “beginner” content, and have been talking about a much more robust YT channel for my students as well as anyone that’s interested in sketching on location. Stay tuned!

Love the Caran d’Ache Neocolor 2’s. I have a nice set of about 25 or so (built mine up over time.) Actually, as I’m sure you know, virtually every color product CD makes (I’m talking their pro lines) is rated at the top ( pricey though they are.) I have found, depending on the paper, I guess, that once I put a dry mark on the paper and then wet it, that original mark will still be there, although lighter, and I usually don’t want that. The way I’ve seen to work around this is to wet the color before you start to paint with it, by wetting some shavings (and don’t throw away those shavings,)...using it like regular pan watercolors or putting your wet brush on the tip of color. Good review. Thanks!

My experience has been that each color reacts to hydration a little differently - they all change in hue and intensity, some pretty dramatically. Great stuff once one learns to anticipate what those changes are going to be. It's not unlike the evolution watercolor paint goes through as it dries, changing from one value to a more matte, and often lighter, value. What I like about CD is that the colors you see in a wet wash are often very close to the dry back.

I like working a new color into the wet color and it's very exciting

Thank you for showing how you use these. I never thought about letting them dry and layering so my results haven't been as I had hoped and I packed them away. Time to try again!
And how about seeing your cat =^..^= Cats and art go together, eh?

ooman56 I’m a little fortunate she didn’t jump right in the middle of the demo sketch. 😁

Could you please make another tutorial, with a different painting, with the neocolor pastels

Angelique Hogeboom Hi, Angelique. This demo really isn’t a finished painting...it was put together to demonstrate the very most basic characteristics of this medium. If you’d like to see of my finished illustrations, check out the image at flic.kr/p/2iEfMNe ...thanks for your interest. Perhaps I will add a video demo of a more finished piece.

I got neo 2 to water colors but they don’t layer well, as you layer up it removed the color as you try and blend it. I like them for like multi media journaling, but not as watercolors. I recently got some Daniel Smith water colors been loving them. $450 later and i still think they’re worth it lol. Love the drawing by the way and you explain well.

They shouldn’t reactivate if you allow them to dry before adding another layer. What kind of paper are you painting on? I suppose if it is a slick surface it might not work quite as well.

Similar to gelatos, but more control with the pointier tip I’m thinking? Looks like it may work well in Bible Journaling.

I hope it was helpful. I find these handle much differently than, say, the oil pastels my students use. They are not my every day media, but I do like to use them when I'm bored with watercolor.

Loved the result and the technique, so different than most others’ approach. Could not stand the shaking camera, it was making me woozy.

@@markanderson744 Cool, good for them. But the shaky camera is nauseating. Guess you won't take this feedback the right way either, but I'll mention it anyway.
