    Getting great feedback from all I've forwarded this video too, its great to see a mercury enthusiast talking through the experience. Just noticed you mentioned the little spec floating in the distance Scott.... that's your booster. After your retro fire the rocket overtakes your capsule at high speed as it continues on the original trajectory.

    • @rwboa22
      @rwboa22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Mercury spacecraft didn't even have an onboard computer, nor did the Mercury Control Center at Cape Canaveral even had a "real time computer complex". All of the computations were done by an IBM computer at Goddard SFC in Maryland and the information sent to Mercury Control, via "Ma Bell" landlines; the data passed up to the spacecraft via the California, Texas, Cape, and Bermuda ground stations.

    Someone else has to have pointed this out: they did _not_ jettison the retro package; they asked him to go down with it attached and he had to go through a manual re-entry setup because of that. I think their uncertainty over the heat shield's attachment led them to not communicate with him till he keyed in like a quarter orbit from committing to descent. However, the Gemini missions are the most exciting IMO

    • @goforlaunch9586
      @goforlaunch9586 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're thinking of Freindship 7 (John Glenn), they made him keep his pack on as they thought his heat sheild had detached. The mission in the video is Freedom 7 (Alan Shepard), the pack jettisoned as normal, however the light didn't come on so Shepard had to manually engage it.

    the 1 seat cockpit from ksp is a mercury capsule

  • @EricIrl
    @EricIrl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think Al's capsule had a jettisonable hatch. That was a modification asked for by the astronauts but not installed in the initial batch of capsules. Gus Grissom's was the first to be fitted - and we all know what happened there.

    No way to blow the hatch in the MR3 mission. Carpenter was bolted in on the first flight. he had to crawl up and out the neck of the capsule that 1st flight. The explosive hatch was first used on Grissom's flight and the argument goes on as far as that outcome.

    • @goforlaunch9586
      @goforlaunch9586 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right there were no explosive bolts on Freedom 7, but the hatch still opened in the same place, it just used the red lever you can see in the demo to open without and just dropped out rather than firing off. The nosecone tunnel was designed for an emergency backup but was never used. Freedom 7 was piloted by Alan Shepard.

      Freedom 7 didn't have the larger top window that the later capsules had, but it did have 2 round porthole windows. It's a myth that it had no windows at all.

    You used the early "block 1" version of the Mercury capsule. I always thought those had a somewhat sparse instrument panel. It would have been better and much more impressive if you used the next version of of the Mercury capsule used on the orbital missions. IE Friendship 7. Anytime I look at the panel of a block 1 I just think, ugg. The block 1 panel was a fail.

    Why would they need the retro engines? It was not orbital flight, no risk for Alan to be stuck in orbit for several weeks, he would fall right down anyway.

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were included for testing, because they probably wanted to make sure they worked before stranding someone in orbit.

      Oh right, I had that question too, I hadn't even considered that several other mercury missions were orbital.

    Have you had the opportunity to talk with Adam Savage? Oh, what am I saying? Probably you two have talked alot already and both want to do something toghether but you have a day job and a family and lots of very important stuff to do that unfortunatelly limits the possibility of creating more content for youtube. Which is both good and sad, sad for us that would love to see both of you talking for great lengths about space suits and awesome/weird space contraptions.
    Would be good.

    • @greenalien5509
      @greenalien5509 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a booster used in the event that something goes wrong at launch. It yanks the capsule off and away from the rocket to save the crew.
