Converted Horse Cart.

  • This fore-cart was converted to work with two horses instead of one. It was sitting in the shed for years -- because it was way too big and heavy for our little horses. So we removed the shafts and replaced them with a pole, repaired the brakes and moved the axle forward to balance the whole thing. It seems to have worked.

A tractor may be more efficient timewise, but think of this. Repairs cost money, fuel costs money. They are noisy, smelly and pollute the air. Horses cost money, too, of course, BUT, they are friendly, cute, work really hard and make you feel good, You can grow their fuel, use their waste to grow more fuel, and food for yourselves! How great is that? And they have really soft noses to stroke. Try that on a tractor!

Great idea! I wish I had horses, unfortunately the closest thing to farm animals that I have now are rabbits .I'll get out of the city eventually. :D

I don't mean this critically, this is only an observation, but obtuse? For all the work they willingly do, surely they could be cut a bit of slack. We humans have a learning curve, so wouldn't horses too...that and they are being introduced to an implement they have never drawn, were I them, I would be far more...obtuse. Fine workmanship you put into your conversion. Mrs. Tc

That panting dog running around the horses would drive me nuts. I don't understand why you allow that. Anyway, it's nicely done I only have serious doubts about the way the pole is connected. This way they have to lift it by their necks, not by their backs and that doesn't look very comfortable.

+Saartje05 Bob, the dog, is a rescue dog and came with a few psychological problems. He has calmed down a lot since then. As for the pole, the whole cart is balanced by moving the axle forward or backwards, so there's very little weight on the pole when the driver is on board.
