Also Jones wrote the main sequence for No Quater and the Riff for Black Dog and also helped page find chord changes for songs that work..... you can see this in jimmy and jones working on stairway to heaven, ....jones hands page the chord when jimmy page is stuck

I think the secret to the band's success was the chemistry between all four members, which created a fifth element. If any of the members of the band were taken out, it would not have been as successful. Every member's playing (to me) sounds more inspired when in that band, than when they have done other projects. Page and Plant formed a kind of cosmic yin/yang balance of energies, Bonham was the foundation and Jones tied everything together.

Yes it's true: John Bonham was using the drums like a solo instrument, and accompaniment to every note that was played, like nobody else; that pop element he liked as well.

All 4 members of Led Zeppelin were phenomenal at what they do. Led Zeppelin was Jimmy Page's band...that's a fact and there's no debate about that. Was Robert Plant a great singer?...hell yes, just like Bonzo was a great drummer and JPJ was a great all around musician but you can't say Jimmy Page "was along for the ride"....that's just ignorant

Couldn’t disagree more…Zeppelin’s allure was the sum of all 4 guys but mostly the musicianship of the 3 guys performances that inspired Plant’s vocals. He was def good but his solo stuff without Bohnam, Page and JPJ is mostly sterile. However his first one Pictures at Eleven smoked!

JPJ was the Swiss army knife in Zep. Jimmy was a solid producer and super emotive guitarist. Robert was a fantastic voice with charisma galore. Bonzo was a human metronome and had a producer who experimented with how Bonzo was miked in the studio. Without Jimmy, Zep would have been successful but Page made them the greatest band of all-time. I started playing drums because of John Bonham and respect his approach, chops and innovation. I think what little work he did with other bands like McCartney sounds fairly undistinguished compared to Zep. I realize McCartney hired Bonham for a few sessions & their musical relationship didn't have the depth of Bonzo's career with Page because
Paul wrote songs that made Paul sound good. Fortunately Page wrote songs so Led Zeppelin could rev its mighty engine.

All four of the members of Led Zeppelin were unique talents, but I do agree that Bonzo's drumming was a key ingredient of their sound. His power and his feel were one of a kind. His bass drum work was unmatched. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who spends most of my time playing acoustic guitar and singing these days, but way back in the 80's I started my musical journey as a drummer, and nobody was more influential to me in that regard than John Bonham.

Prince was right. If you watch any videos of Zeppelin live you will see that Jimmy Page is playing off of John Bonham's drumming, It's there if you look. Page is listening intently to what Bonham is doing and reacting to it. Bonham is reaacting to what Page is doing as well so it is very symbiotic. And behind them both is John Paul Jones adding in his brilliance.

I think Bonham was great and it's hard to imagine someone in his place being as effective, but I think Page, Plant and Jones all had to be there for it to be what it was. Page is an idiosyncratic guitar player, but he still rips, especially for the time. Plant's voice was absolutely imperative, no question. Jones was a glue that held things together during experimental phases as he was the most proficient multi instrumentalist and was able to add unique elements that the others weren't capable of. They were just a killer band all in all.

Sorry, as much as I may love Cream and adore the Stones, it kinda boggles my mind how any serious musician could have something negative to say about John Bonham's drumming in the context of Led Zeppelin, Zeppelin never would have been what they were without him, especially live. But that goes for all four. I think that Baker and Clapton were just butthurt about Zeppelin overshadowing the big finale of their own band, that's just a guess because I remember Jack Bruce also saying negative things about zep.
Keith Richards? I don't know, he's one of my all time favorite musicians and songwriters but he's just flat out wrong about this topic.
Ironically, I love Prince and obviously Zeppelin, but I was not a fan of the couple of versions of WLL I heard him do. He sang it in his falsetto voice and it took a lot of the power away from it, imo.

I saw in a reply you made to someone else that you're working on a JPJ video, I'm looking forward to that. JPJ is soooo underated by the masses. His bass playing is off the hook him and Bonzo are the main reason I love listening to live Zep bootlegs, and when Jimmy's dope habit really made a negative impact on his playing during 77 and Plants voice was blown out those two totally carried the band live (JPJ and JB, that is), although by the final tour in 80 Jimmy was playing better even though from all accounts, including his own, he was most definitely still strung out...go figure
