@Chief Sy -Anime and Gaming- it's my favourite game ever, already bought the collectors edition. Just try to avoid spoilers that's what i would reccomend to you
During the battle where this plays, the instrumental plays for the initial phase. And like you said it sounds heavy, looming and dark, because it's a boss battle. But when the lyrics kick in, it quickly turns into a brighter song that feels like it represents the characters, not the boss you're fighting.
I feel like thats the general thesis behind all the games boss tracks. Blooming villain starts out chaotic as all hell, but the instant that guitar drops, it feels like your doing the final sprint of a marathon. And the synth afterwards is like Joker giving a cocky/sadistic smile after an ass whoopin. P5 definitely knocks it out of the park with the boss tracks.
@@SycoticForeverNeverAF Really? I always felt like the song's verses are about Joker and his last gambit to defeat Shido and Akechi while the chorus is about looking for hope in the face of despair. "I'm keeping the balance, but I'm standing On razor's edge now Move quick or my life is over One strike, just a feint, then ... I'm outa his field of vision Don't ask why I'm ready but I'm ready to Strike him down now A chance at a new start There's no time for indecision" Like, this is pretty much word for word as to how Joker fooled Akechi and Shido into revealing their hand while faking his death, right down to the plan nearly failing when Joker was drugged by the police to the point where he temporarily forgets the plan.
H. J. Yes this was Shido’s song. Everything that you just quoted reflects towards his resolve to strike the phantom thieves down and start his new life as ruler of japan. “Ruler of the Desert” that is the wasteland that he created. That is why when he strips he muscle brace off the lyrics kick in. He is on a razors edge pushed into a corner.
To be fair, Persona 5's aesthetics were off the chain. Everything blended perfectly. The music just brought everything together in a beautiful mix. 10/10.

The name of the song as well as it's main hook, Rivers in the Desert, is actually a biblical reference to the American Standard Version of Isaiah 43:19, which has God create a path through the wilderness along with a river in the desert so that his people may drink. The idea of making something impossible possible and opening a path that wasn't there originally being the main idea of this song.

It and Futaba's arc are very dear to me as when Persona 5 came out I was also a shut-in, and the game as a whole, most especially Futaba became my inspiration and driving force to break out of that lifestyle I had been in for 3-4 years, get a GED and start going to college. this song really elevates the Shido fight from cool to absolutelly amazing. The music in this game elevates it so high up. The momment you deliver the killing blow to the true last boss is one of my favorite in gming, mostly due to the music cue
This theme makes me feel all of the emotion Ren is feeling. (Spoilers) Ren had his life ruined by Shido. In this moment, he's feeling anger, which is portrated by the strong impact at the beginning, and the same can be said for Yaldabaoth. He had been leading Joker on for over half a year and saw him and all of humanity as a game. However it also portrays the strength to overcome these foes. He is going to absolutely kick the living shit out of the bastard who ruined his life, and the malicious god who toyed with humanity like it was nothing. Rivers in the desert is one of my favorite tracks in Persona 5 and in gaming as a whole
My favorite part about this song is that the loud percussion sounds like a prisoner is slamming their hands on a jail door, and it disappears when the Violin comes in, like the Violin represents the Phantom Thieves, while the Jail Door Slam is the Phantom Thieves living as students.

I'm not the biggest Persona 5 fan but i really hope choosing this game brought more people in your channel. Your music reaction videos are such a good concept, and ironically enough recently you really stepped up the pacing for these, great job.
Thank you! I'm doing these more as I noticed people really love to see this type of content! I'm also very passionate about gaming, music & teaching, so I definitely enjoy these :)
I this video, about the greatest Persona 5 song, you referenced Smooth criminal, You are not alone, Undertale AND provided a Jazz version of the song (wich I'd love to hear full length). The subscribe button had no chance, resistance was futile.
Your breakdowns make me really appreciate the music more. "Take over" and "Colors flying high" are two new additions that would be awesome to see you breaking down. Keep on the good work!
Man great content. I am glad you are giving Persona music some detailed attention. In the world of gaming music I feel like people like Nobuo Uematsu gets all the attention (don't get me wrong, well deserved) but I feel like the genius Shoji Meguro gets slept on a lot. He has pretty much nothing but fire tracks all throughout not just SMT: Persona but the greater Shin Megami Tensei umbrella as a whole. He has made some of the most gritty soundtracks I have heard in gaming and he is so versatile.
The song itself also ties in perfectly with Persona 5s story (Spoilers ahead) Since Masoyoshi Shido is the one that got MC arrested, he is the one reason why you transfered, and now that you have a chance to change his heart, and the fact that everyone thinks that THIS is the final moment, the final boss, the final obstacle you have to face, the last palace, the lyrics captures that perfectly. "It's now or it's never, and I've got to Make my decision This time it could be my moment" it starts off perfectly by having singing about it being now or never to make your decision, and changing Shidos heart. I would go on for more, but I am not an analyser, it's just a small thing I noticed, among other parts of the song that just shows how many layers there are to this song.
I'd highly recommend you look into the Xenoblade Chronicles OST especially when the definitive edition of the game releases May 29th since they have orchestrally remastered 90+ tracks. One of the best OSTs in gaming, can't wait for the remake.
1:44 It's funny you mentioned that since Raoul, the third form of Arsene in Persoona 5 Royal, has a design very similar to Smooth Criminal Michael Jackson.
There are some kinda moovie vibes in Rivers In the Desert that makes me unlike it. It's like doesn't belong to a Persona song, or more like a radio song. Anyway, it's just personal thoughts. Actually enjoyed the video a lot, thanks for analizing it

The boss fight against Shido was pure bliss because of that song. It pushed me so hard. Loved it!
the last boss in the new semester of P5R has a really good ost.
@@reformeddoomer6777: don’t remind me, I just got over that fight
@@jasendrileck2322 damn P5R is such a good game. I wish I could replay it like the first time. I highly recommend FF14 if you're looking for a good game.
I don't know anything about music theory but your videos make what your saying really easy to understand and interesting. Great video and I look forward to more in the future.
Do one with Life Will Change please
Life will change is one my favorites lol
Pls pls pzlzz
this song really elevates the Shido fight from cool to absolutelly amazing. The music in this game elevates it so high up. The momment you deliver the killing blow to the true last boss is one of my favorite in gming, mostly due to the music cue
That Gurren Lagann reference was WAY too good
also please do libera me from hell if possible
Persona 5 soundtrack will never stop being fire and that's a fact
I'm glad to be alive in the same era as someone as talented as you, Alex. Thank you.
This theme makes me feel all of the emotion Ren is feeling.
(Spoilers)
Ren had his life ruined by Shido.
"what i like about videogame music is that it's not about how you broke up with your girlfriend, but they fill you with a sense of determination" YES. ABSOLUTELY YES. I love pop music. But this is another animal. And this SONG YEEZ. THIS GUY GETS IT!
Your work is great! Also it would be cool an analysis of the doom eternal's music,it would be epic!
The little I heard (Kar En Tuk) scared the shit out of me!
That's some powerful music right there. May talk about DOOM at some point indeed
@@AlexMoukalaMusicagree, some of the stuff Mick Gordon's chorus make can take chills out of me too lol, still really great stuff!
Although,my favorite track from the game is Gladiator,it makes you feel unstoppable!
Oi Josuke! I just used 「T H E H A N D 」and teleported Alex Moukala towards me! His stand makes music! Ain't that neat Josuke?
"Might sound cheesy to those that haven't played these games"
I've played and loved many of these games, but hell yes these songs are cheesie. I love them for that because I don't think you can get anymore honest than over-the-top cheese
You did MJ's POW! flawlessly man xD
layer cake always gets my feet movin! that bassline mhhhh and butterfly kiss is a bop
Never get tired of Persona 5 OST, it's a masterpiece!
I was saying “ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWA” right when the clip played. 😆
I loved the mention of You're Not Alone - and why! That moment is why it's one of my favorite FF9 tracks by far (probably in a three-way tie with Vamo alla' Flamenco and Rose of May tbh). Such a huge moment, such a good track.
The whole video was great - I've been lowkey waiting for this one!
I really want this guy to react and analyze “Take Over” and some of the vocal tracks from P5 Scramble now. I feel like I better understand the core fundamentals of P5’s music now.
I thought it was just me who got that classic Bond title screen vibe from the tune. Glad I aint the only one
Everyone: *Talking about Rivers in the Desert*
Me: Yo, did he just make an Undertale reference?!
that reference really filled me....WITH DETERMINATION
well, the song "is" filled with *Hopes and Dreams* as you give a powerhungry human a *bad time*
Stop, my eyes hurt from this cringe.
@@peynnep6483 not to forget Motivation
Jazzy Rivers in the Desert: I feel like I'd be romancing Shido not fighting him.
The song itself also ties in perfectly with Persona 5s story (Spoilers ahead)
Since Masoyoshi Shido is the one that got MC arrested, he is the one reason why you transfered, and now that you have a chance to change his heart, and the fact that everyone thinks that THIS is the final moment, the final boss, the final obstacle you have to face, the last palace, the lyrics captures that perfectly.
"It's now or it's never, and I've got to
Make my decision
This time it could be my moment" it starts off perfectly by having singing about it being now or never to make your decision, and changing Shidos heart.
I would go on for more, but I am not an analyser, it's just a small thing I noticed, among other parts of the song that just shows how many layers there are to this song.
Oh man I want to hear that whole jazz version of Rivers in the Desert
3:33 Ah, a man of culture.
I'd highly recommend you look into the Xenoblade Chronicles OST especially when the definitive edition of the game releases May 29th since they have orchestrally remastered 90+ tracks. One of the best OSTs in gaming, can't wait for the remake.
I second this! So many great music tracks!
I would love to see him cover “Engage the Enemy”
1:44 It's funny you mentioned that since Raoul, the third form of Arsene in Persoona 5 Royal, has a design very similar to Smooth Criminal Michael Jackson.
There are some kinda moovie vibes in Rivers In the Desert that makes me unlike it. It's like doesn't belong to a Persona song, or more like a radio song.
Anyway, it's just personal thoughts. Actually enjoyed the video a lot, thanks for analizing it
Just randomly found this in my recommended, and damn this guy knows what he’s talking about and makes me love rivers in the desert even more
BRO you are awesome man I really like your videos and honeslty I'm glad to see how all these songs are composed. Also that sae joke was really funny lol honeslty the kinda should make a jazz or calm version of rivers In the desert.
Do “I Believe” or “Throw Away Your Mask” from P5R
Throw your mask away has such an underlying sadness and desperation it is just so good as like a neutral person tryna make his final look plea to the heroes. Like a misunderstood villain.
Super Vegito thats the point and no one asked you
I really would love to see you react to 'I believe' from Persona 5 the Royal ♡
3:21
Does anybody have a link a jazz cover like this?
I didn't think I could love the music of Persona 5 more than I already did but watching this (and other Persona 5 videos you do, River's in the Desert is just my favorite P5 song which is why I am commenting here.) Thank you for this gift. I am someone who knows nothing about music, other than liking what I like. But you break down everything in your videos in a way that is digestible and really easy for someone like me to understand. It's really neat understanding why the music makes me feel the way it does.
I found your channel through Supereyepatchwolf's video and I am so glad I did. Your channel has opened my eyes to an entirely different layer to enjoy with music that I never knew existed. And it's so clear that you are passionate about music, and why it's doing what it's doing. I know it's your job as a music producer but you're not sharing the information here because it's your job. You're doing it because you love it and these tracks and every video I have watched that has been so apparent.
Thank you for sharing that love and passion with us! I'm excited to dig into the backlog of your videos and see your channel grow. I can't support monetarily at the moment but boy am I excitedly sharing your videos with my friends. That passion is infectious and I don't think I can watch a video of yours without going "THIS IS SO COOL, YOU GOTTA WATCH IT" to my friends.
This gurren lagann reference was welcome
Have you played the yakuza games? Specifically have you played yakuza 0 there's some really awesome disco songs along with karaoke (unique to that franchise) that you might like taking a look at?
I still need to try that series, looking forward to it actually!
If you haven’t looked at it yet NieR: Automata has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Also Ace Combat 7 is amazing as well.
just discovered your channel, my man! what a frickin delight!
3:20 I would love to hear a full version of that tbh it's just too seductive and jazzy I just love it lol
I want him to review a Persona 5 Royal Boss music, Throw Away Your Mask.
4:36 i love your hat bro
That swap to Layer Cake though…
Do il vento d’oro next.
I've always loved videogame music, but I think your explanation of how it gives you a sense of something greater is exactly it, you nailed that feeling I have
Thank you for this. Your videos are killer. I am getting so hyped for persona 5 royal on Tuesday.
I gotta admit, making this video made a lot of memories flood back in regards to that game.
Imma Day One that thing.
I've been playing Royal, I finished Madarame's Palace and so far the game is way more accessible and fun than the original P5 👍
@@kostasspirou1010 yeah, the first dungeon was pretty brutal. The rest of the game was extremely easy. Always a strange balance in the modern persona games. How did you get an early copy?
@@Perfectcrime87 I pre ordered the Phantom Thieves Edition and it arrived like 3 days ago... and I have around 15 hours in 3 days 😄 its very enjoyable, so many ways to get SP when you are in the metaverse, and the first palace is actually easier and better.
@@kostasspirou1010 You are so lucky, mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow, Amazon says it will be, but they still haven't shipped it yet...
You are a Hee-Ho! man that's why i subscribed to you :D Awesome video BTW!
"This is why I love video game music, there'a so much more to it than your average pop song where you just talk about your ex leaving you"
Sir, that's when I knew.. that I must subscribe. I must!
How have I never been recommended this guy before. Not only are his breakdowns amazing but he’s producing jazz instrumental versions of the track too?!
God damn. Instant subscribe and bell hitting right now.
I need a full jazzy remix of rivers in the desert now
With the MJ comparison... The Phantom Thieves really are just “Smooth Criminals”
The whole soundtrack in persona 5 is amazing. I love it all.
I died. I'm subscribing 3:34
He plays the Soulsborne series, Persona series and lots of JRPGs, how can you not love this man.
As a person who somewhat doesn't have lick of an idea in producing music I find this video and your other videos very helpful in terms of relaying information and really helps a person to broaden their views in making music.
I’m really enjoying these breakdowns. Subbed.
Also, that Jazz version wouldn’t sound out of place in a Bond film.
I don't know how I stumbled onto this channel but I'm so glad I did.
I guess the TH-cam Algorithm did something good for once!
If you hear "Rivers In The Dessert" & "Libre Me From Hell" your a livin legend. So congrats you now know two of the best songs in the world
I think out of all the games I've played, persona 5 has the best soundtrack. Every song is stellar
Yes, Rivers in the Desert is what happens when you put the baby of Another one Bites the Dust and Smooth Criminal in a video game.
the part where you explained why video game music is amazing is so relatable, the meaning behind them is so deep and epic if you played the game, my personal fav track from P5 is Life will Change cause is the theme of the phantom thieves when they are at their peak moment, just about to steal the treasure, thanks for another amazing video
Now I undersrand why I could sit in front of tv for this game 12hrs straight, not only the game itself is fun, but the tracks are soooo addictive
this song, i started with a meh with it, and i've grown to absolutely love it. it became my favorite thanks to repetition...
Imma need that jazz version of rivers of the desert now
Oh my god please tell me Life Will Change is next
Can you please analyze "engage the enemy" from Xenoblade Chronicles please?
Michael Jackson should be a Persona.
I was expecting you to transition into a Megalovania remix with that Undertale reference lol.
Hope you'll do reactions of Persona 5 Scramble tracks :)
When a cool drop of water's all I need, gotta clear my head of anger and greed. A place to refresh heart and mind, can I find some time in...
You gotta listen to The Days When Mother Was There. It’s such a cool track!
When it rolled into Smooth Criminal, I lost my mind.
