I agree. I would say 90% of romances do that thing where people hate each other and then fall in love which is not realistic and NOT HEALTHY. These people met as kids, had tons of stuff in common and LIKED each other to then build into love. Way more healthy. Made me cry when she died but at least they had the time they did.

The catch is that it told a better story in 5 minutes than the rest of the film itself... "Up" is the perfect example of a film whose emotional peak comes way too soon and the rest is just standard animated adventure...in every First Time Watching video of "Up" you see reviewers looking sad or moved but obviously it's for the first five minutes. A similar case is the film "Interstellar"... I am still waiting for the FTW video that doesn't show a crying McConaughey in the cover lol... you would think it's the only moment of the film.

The snipe bird is real btw (Though it lives in the marshes, so sending Russel for in in the city was an impossible task,) but , It's where the term sniper came from. Back in the day if you could hit a snipe at distance, with an old Kentucky rifle or even more impressively with a smooth bore or musket.
Edit: just fyi they look nothing like Kevin, hahaha. They are small and brown with a long sharp bill.

I was in my freshman year of college when this movie came out. Me and seven or eight frat buddies crammed in a dorm room expecting to laugh and jeer at a kid's movie, and inside ten minutes we were all stunned into sadness after the opening sequence. From then on we were invested enough to watch and pay attention, and you never saw a dozen 18-year-old men shed a few manly group tears until near the end (and you know what scene I'm talking about). I now have a memory I can laugh at and remember fondly years later, thanks to "Up". A truly good movie!

The reveal where Carl finds the added pages in Ellie's "My Adventure Book" is hinted at in the hospital scene with Ellie. On the nightstand next to her hospital bed you can see a tape dispenser and scissors. Apparently she added those pages right then before she handed the book over to Carl.

I saw a feminist 'critique' it once on a blog (it was her own blog so she wasn't trying for attention or anything. I think she had like one comment on that entry, so I didn't detect any tongue in cheek or pretense) and she was cursing Mr. Frederickson as being horribly selfish and basically keeping his wife from realizing her travel dream. Basically, by assuming the worst motives she was able to take a touching love story and turn it into a horrible story of abuse and selfishness. She was a young woman, too. I guess I'm sorry for bringing this up, Nancy, but your reaction is almost universal and its my reaction too. I can only imagine either the brainwashing or abuse she must have suffered at some point to look at this movie sequence in this way. And I'm sure her overall view of the world must have been bleak.

Its nice when they show 'why' old people appear hateful/divisive, grouchy or defensive. They went through a lot.....and our old days won't be any different. Things change and there's always something wrong with society with how it changed.

"Up": An animated feature that "rakes you over the coals" in the first 30 minutes. Then the tale of Carl Fredericksen and Russell begins as a "battle for social engagement." Carl "makes his move," finds South America, and meets his childhood hero. Then things turn very dark...

Co-Writer and Co-Director Bob Peterson (who also voiced Dug) said that Dug's line, "I have just met you, and I love you", was inspired by a quote from a kid he met when he was a camp counselor back in the 1980's.

All right, well my dad passed away in September, and I sat here crying watching this. (And I'm a lot older than you all). But I don't think you let go of them. Your life enlarges around the grief, but it doesn't leave you entirely. That's ok. I'll love Dad forever and I'll see him again.

It’s an artist movie, from the music design at the beginning to the realization of their life together being the adventure, including how the main villain represented the part of Carl that refused to let go and refused to move on. Carl’s growth in the movie was magical, and it’s arguably one of the best animated movie for it’s emotional standpoint and it’s beautiful storytelling and world building.

UP started out as an adorable animated movie. Karl and Ellie meeting as children growing up together. Karl and Ellie getting married. Planning a family. Ellie’s miscarriage. Growing old together. Ellie’s death. There has never been a miscarriage in any animated film until Pixar. Yeah Ellie’s miscarriage & death was unexpected. I lost it and tears were following out of my eyes. Probably recovered from crying 3 or 5 minutes. That was so sad.
But UP was unbelievably enchanting & fun & the animation was breathtaking, This was a really good story.
UP won the Oscar for best animated movie in 2010. So did the director.

Yeah, I think this opening is worse than Finding Nimo and when that first came out, it was pretty dark. It takes you on quiet the journey, all just for him to learn that LIFE is the Adventure and he & Ellie had a great one!

Then again, it's not very hard, here !
UP is a masterpiece. It can be emotionally devastating in an instant and hysterically funny the next. Now THAT'S Art. That's a quality level Pixar hasn't reached since Darth Mouse fired Lasseter.
He was the co-creator but mostly the Soul of Pixar.
Having juuuust discovered your channel, i don't know if you've done them before, but it be curious to see you react to animated films like THE SECRET OF NIHM, THE IRON GIANT or the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON trilogy.
