- The Poppy motif has become synonymous with Australian coin collecting and it will come as no surprise that this new release from the Royal Australian Mint has sent the market into a state of flux!
In this video I take a closer look at the new 2022 issue and hopefully provide you with some information and light entertainment at a time when collecting $2 coins can feel a little daunting and chaotic!

Stayed up over night so I could HOPEFULLY get one, but it's looking like a bust already. Sucks that there are no coin or bullion places North of the river in Perth.
I still have some hope I can get something through RAM, but they've already delayed the "event" time twice and the phone line is completely down..
Is swan bullion on the north side of the river ?
They're south of the river, a good 20-30 minutes further SouthEast of the Perth Mint and the CBD.
Someone mentioned that the queue was reset about an hour prior to the intended release time but I'm not sure if that is accurate. Perhaps more clarity will be provided on the second attempt at releasing these coins! Thanks for watching Goat 😊
Kind of in the category you described where i have considered selling my whole collection. My collection goes way back in pre decimal over a couple of generations but today has definitely Jaded me a little. Seems more about opportunistic vultures than collectors and as you say something that started with good intent has become just a cash cow.

Thank you Matt, to say I'm a bit of a collector is an understatement. Since getting pretty much home bound due to cancer I live for my collection. I tried so hard to get one for my collection I actually secured one only to find after placing the order it was reversed a day later. I tried you and my fav dealers all to late by a nano second ended up at some website I'd never heard of and grabbed one only to get it reversed 24hrs later. I was so annoyed I honestly spat the chop and nearly quit the whole game. This was a terrible experience it was really helpful to watch this.

I was also there and the line went pretty quick for how big the line looked. I was the 3rd batch of people to go in and they were doing 50 people at a time it took 25 minutes to get in the doors after opening
I didn't even realise the Remembrance Coin would be another Red Poppy this year until I saw your video. Was mainly looking to get the Daintree Rainforest Silver Coin and agreeing with what you said about the Great Barrier Reef 1oz, they really could have done a lot better with the colour.

Do you know the original RAM release prices for the 2012 and 2022 c mint mark coins? Just out of curiosity?
Thanks for the kind words Jack! The RAM used to do C Mintmarked coins for $12 each upon release but they have since increased to $15 each. I'd have to double check but I suspect the 2012 was either $10 or $12 when they first came out.

Wisey. I collected 1 dollar privy marked coins many years ago before coloured 2 dollars buggered it all up. Now 1 dollar privy marked coins are worth stuff all. I have not been able to get any 2 dollar c issues yet. Today was the same as the mint site crashed after i had been in the que for 2 hours before it opend. The phone just cuts off. I gave up again. 🙄. Like you said being just a collector is hard sometimes as the money makers seem to be better at getting the coins. Back to noodling if i can find a bank that will let me have coins.
Hopefully things ease up for collectors in the future, perhaps the mint will turn it around and find a way to encourage collecting a little more over flipping coins for quick cash!

Good on the people who got then, a few got multiple, and that upsets people. Me I gave up $2 coins in 2020 as well as buying from the mint. I would say alot of people got them just to resell. And virtually no one is getting it because of what it celebrates, it is just about $$$.
This release is shaping up to be a big fail.

Unfortunately, I tend to agree with that sentiment. It doesn't feel like it was very well thought out or extensively planned which as you mentioned, has led to a lot of disappointed and frustrated collectors which is a real shame.

I think the thing to remember about these coins is that yes, although the original 2012 red poppy symbolised the ANZAC sacrifice, the 2022 is merely a homage to the popularity of the design itself, not done for ANZAC remembrance purposes. There has been little to no mention of these being a remembrance coin at all. The 2012 is special for that reason and always will be more sought after.

I was on your site refreshing. Page froze and by 8:33am all gone.
Now in queue on RAM and they keep putting it back 30 minutes. Now up to 11am yet they are serving people at the Mint and the phones are constantly busy ( which is understandable) but I know of no one that has gotten through on the phones.
Sorry to hear about that! I think a number of dealers websites had a rough time this morning with the increased traffic. Hopefully more collectors will get a decent chance once the mint reattempts to release them!

You're right, a large planchet with each $2 remembrance/Anzac coin design like the Queen's Beasts completer coin. It would've been an epic anniversary coin, whilst also commemorating our service men and women for Remembrance Day
That's such a good idea, the completer style would lend itself very nicely to that theme too! Maybe I'll write a letter, although something tells me the mint will have a few other letters to read before mine 😅

I was on Downies Collectables and had one in my cart. It took 15 minutes to go to the cart and by that time they had sold out. Then I went to e-bay and the cheapest was at $200 and the dearest was $400. I did go to the Royal Australian Mint, but they have been under maintenance for a long time. This can be a frustrating hobby at times.
I had the exact experience with Downies and the Mint. The Mint has yet to release the coin as the website crashed. Eta 30 mins mate, although they may just extend the wait once again for the 5th time. Qued on there since 7am lol. I very fortunately got 1 with downies after the website glitched and carried on for about 30mins or so as well, It was in stock and wouldnt let me add to cart at first, then checkout was irritatingly worse to get through. As a collector of many years myself, this whole system is a bit of a turn off, starting to think I should find a new hobby haha. Hope you're successful mate, goodluck!
I wonder if there's a solution for larger companies to offer a more reliable cart system, I've run into that issue many times too where I am confident I am about to secure an item only to have it disappear from the cart when the time to finalise comes around! Although I guess most sites don't get this level of traffic in one hit!
Mate it happened too me as well and as soon as that happened I unsubscribed from Downies straight away and have another look on ebay and look at the bastards who bought them for $15 and are now trying to unload them for 2.5k 🤣🤣🤣
@@ThompsonsCoins I agree with you. Avid collectors have missed out many times because the mintage is lower than the demand. I remember being put in a queue for 10 minutes and when the time come and I was let in to order my coins, there was none left. That is very frustrating. The only answer I can think of is, mint more than they do. They will sell and everyone will be happy.
@@bigange6867 I am feeling your frustration. I would even go on record and say that the ebayers do not have the coins as yet. I wonder how many of them are dealers or work for the mint.
Sometimes we are so focussed on what we don’t have, we forget to enjoy and appreciate what we do have. There is only 60,000 minted, there was never going to be enough for everyone. Did anyone get the Daintree rainforest coin from the beauty rich and rare set? Don’t let the sour taste left from the bungled rollout of the poppy coin ruin your passion for collecting.
Friday I decided to find some coins I’d bought and put aside and life went on. I had 4 more Coris, whole set of changeover in bags, the mosaic, 2 bags of Mabo unbelievable condition.
Then I didn’t care. Exactly, what we have not what we want.

Fingers crossed a more equitable solution can be reached for those types of releases. I actually used to work in the Philatelic Bureau many years ago and I can confirm first-hand that the phones/emails would go absolutely bananas on impressions day!
Releasing the same poppy artwork is rather cheap is it not? However I have 4 mins remaining in the queue to purchase my 3. Just blew out to 17 mins. wtf. And everytime my time gets close it blows out by another 20 mins or so. I am starting to wonder just how corrupt the coin market is?

@@kaynefryday1251 and this bothers you why? I would love just one C marked coin however if offered 3 eg RAM then that would also suit me fine. If you saw the way I collect C marked coins then you might understand. I have been collecting a number of years and have not sold a single coin. :)
I'm surprised to see the same design 'Again' & was expecting something a little different. The RAM have limited their dealers orders greatly on the last few releases. Which isn't good & is definitely turning off some collectors, especially those new to it. Lets hope things improve on the RAMs part. But I'm not going to hold my breath for that. How do you think the 2012 red poppy coins will go with prices? I’ve seen things increase on eBay by 50%. I’m lucky to have a PCGS MS68 C-Mintmark red poppy. I love her
I would anticipate a bit of a burst in terms of interest from the general public but these things can tend to revert to previous pricing just as quickly, so personally, I would avoid making any major calls when the market is in such a unique state.

Although I hold onto any war related coins I find in my change I don't get into or buy them.
As an investment I feel people will feel less sexy about war as time goes by. As a collector they don't do much for me, I'd much prefer the honey bee or even a steem shovel or grumpy old black board. Cheers.

Matt… It was the 10th Anniversary release, did the Mint underestimate the greed ( a dealer hocking the box of 34 for $200 each) or should the mintage have been higher (?)
I think the mint underestimated demand for sure and as I suggested, in my opinion an entirely unique would have been more appropriate rather than reproducing the same coin design for a third time.

I just discovered that I actually have one of the 2014 dual coin pack/envelopes that have a "C" red poppy & green dove, very happy considering I dont have $2000 to buy one for my collection haha
Does anyone know when the Mint will re-release the 2022 Remembrance $2 on the RAM eshop ?
I'm a collector and have all the pre-decimal and decimal but after waiting over 6 hours for one poppy coin on the Australian mint eshop i decided to stop collecting because it's no longer enjoyable. The mint should have offered one only to their registered customers. would not surprise me if dealers are are sitting on their allocation waiting to flip them for 100 times the price in a few months.

Totally agree. The meaning has gone via the way of making money. The result for me is that I will not get involved in any way with the hyped-up special releases. I collect coins made for circulation.< and the occasional special coin that has some interest for me, eg the Tamworth 50c coin. Some coins for circulation ae hard to come by and that is part of the fun. I refuse to line profiteering peoples pockets.

Growing up my mother & father helped with charities related to help our RSL mostly because and I'll say it with the greatest of honesty. Ppl were better and more helpful and honest and caring and mindful and respectful of our returned soldiers. My father was one his brother also until he fell off a roof rebuilding his country instead of being in hospital and the knowledge of that alone with my Father's brothers loss is more than enough for ppl to look past the coins and remembrance and take the time everyone to remember how important these ppl committed to the freedom of our country.
Sometimes alot of ppl nowadays here have Zero understanding of.
Hey Matt so disappointed with what is going on with the way the red poppy coin has been handled by the Mint i have been collecting for years and like a lot of people i waited in line for a chance to just get one coin which never happened . But i think the sad thing is that is see people that are showing that they have 6 or more coins . I am sure thier has to be a better way to handle this . Anyhow great video keep up the good work. For a 2022 it's absolutely disgusting the way ebay sellers selling the item from $199-$400. I can understand $2012 prize us up. But, a $15 that you ge online. It was gone straight away. Surely, we could pre-order and the shops can limit the amount being sold and record those people who sells at eBay. For enthusiast collector and gifting it to my 3 adult kids and a niece for Christmas. I was truly disappointed that R.A.M website went down.

Already sold out at your end Matt?? Oh please....I want for my personal collection of C mintmarks. I never did get close to the front of the queue and somewhere around the 3 minute mark the queue would jump and I was given another 20-40 mins or more in the RAM queue to no avail!!! Yes Matt I am one person who now thinks the coin game is corrupt.

To me the other big point with this release is the total ineptitude of the queue it system the RAM are using. Who the hell designs these apps that the government uses? They are so incredibly bad. Seriously in this day and age how hard is it to have a system such as registering and then lodging you in a queue and then emailing or messaging you when your time in the queue is happening. Not the debacle that happened on Thursday where people sat on the website all day only to see time was continually reset. Ram get your shit together And hire some IT people who know what they are actually doing
Allowing three per customer for such a highly desirable coin and a mintage of only 60 thousand is just feeding the frenzy of scalpers.This release should of been at least a couple of hundred thousand so genuine collectors could get one for their sets and to burn the scalpers margins.This fiasco has made me realise it is time to move on to something else for a hobby that has less anxiety and naked greed attached to it.I will keep my 50 cent date set because they are the coin i love and offload the rest,cheers.
They should release these as unlimited mintage and release every year into circulation. Keep the greedy sellers at bay

This NOV 2022 release was highly anticipated and RAM was aware of it.
RAM should offer coins firstly to loyal collectors (with IDs) - then to ‘distributors’ !!! & others.
I’m absolutely disappointed with what RAM eShop has done. I’ve checked 5mins ago, and ‘New Products’ are still out …

I think to be employable in this industry the most valuable traits are a willingness to learn and being trustworthy. My business is a long way off employing anyone but I am very flattered by the thought of someone wanting to work for the company at this early stage :)
