Just sharing my experience here, I used to own an old Yamaha CLP-920, I sometimes play the CLP-170 and CLP-220 at school, then I switched to a Roland RP-301 a few years ago, and I'm currently using a Roland RD-800 as my main piano. I also own a Yamaha M1 upright and often play Yamaha's CVP-700 series at the store. One thing I can tell you after 17 years of playing both acoustic and digital pianos is that right now Roland has better keys than Yamaha across all their product range. Roland's old PHA-4 feels better and more realistic than even Yamaha's NW-GH found on their flagship Clavinova CVP-709, especially the feedback and escapement. Roland's new PHA-50 feels more refined and quieter than the PHA-4. As for the sound, Roland pianos sound more raw and less sampled (each note of the piano sounds, on the RD-800 in this case, has distinct characteristics and you can even tune individual notes to your liking) as if the mic is positioned close to the strings and hammer, while Yamaha (I'm using the CVP-705 for comparison) sounds warm and it's as if you're listening to an already mixed playback, that's why it's more pleasing to the ear for some. Roland digital pianos have very wide dynamic range, so you really feel in control on how expressive you want to play (this video showcases that pretty well, it's not the piano's position that makes the Yamaha sounds muted, the Roland just has far greater dynamic range). The sound characteristics is up to preference, but since Roland combines sampling and physical modeling, it's easier to customize the sound to your exact needs. Some tuning parameters are accessible on Roland's lower-end models that only exist in Yamaha's higher-end models. After trying Roland pianos, I never consider to look back at Yamaha digital pianos. Yamaha makes top quality acoustic pianos, but their digital pianos just don't cut it for me, I'd rather get a Kawai digital piano with Grand Feel II action. Kawai digital pianos have mostly similar characteristics as Yamaha digital pianos but with key action that's in a whole new level and actually feels like a real grand piano. I'm hoping to get a Kawai digital piano in the future if I have the budget, I was seriously blown away by their GFII action, but I picked Roland because I just love their piano sound and I feel like what they offer fits exactly what I need. I think their digital pianos are underrated, but that's me. I hope this somewhat helps you decide what to look for.
Well, I'm a man and I also focus more on the player who puts his soul in his performance. The piano's... well.... that's just stupid hardware without soul ;-))
I went to a music store in Toronto today to test both models since I’ve been debating over which one to buy for a while now. I tested both for the first time playing the same tune back to back and using a headphone provided by the store so the built-in speakers from the respective models don’t have anything to do with the differences of the sounds. My observations: I tested the FP30 first. At first, Roland’s key action (with that escapement) felt a little awkward (to me personally) so I decided to try the P115 instead. Indeed, the P115 felt more pleasant at first - but not for long! After a few minutes of playing the two instruments back and forth, the FP30 started to feel more natural and felt almost like a real acoustic piano. Also, at first, the FP30 sounded brighter while the P115 sounded a little sweeter (almost mellow). Then after after a few more minutes of playing, I’ve started to notice more obvious differences. The P115 sounds good from the middle keys up to the upper keys but I find the lower keys to be weaker compared to the FP30. On the other hand the FP 30 sounded more natural from the lower keys, middle and the higher keys. At this point, I was already leaning towards FP30. I often play an acoustic grand piano (I’m not an expert player though) and during that comparison between the two models, I felt the Roland FP30’s key action felt closer to an acoustic piano than the P115’s. Now the deciding factor came when I played an improvisation where I spontaneously decide how hard or soft would I press the keys. Hands down to the FP30!!! The keys and sound engine were so sensitive enough to capture subtle nuances. If I press the keys softly, Roland gives that natural soft and sweet acoustic piano sound in relation to the weight/degree of my pressing. The P115 however doesn’t feel as natural, it felt similar to playing a keyboard where you disable the touch sensitivity function. Of course it’s not as bad as that, but that is just to illustrate how I felt when I compared both models. In short, the FP-30 is more expressive. A big deciding factor for me. Even though the P115 has more polyphony than the FP30, in the end, it really didn’t matter because the FP30 sounded much better and more natural than the P115. Again, based on my observation, I believe the reason why FP30 sounded more natural, is because of it’s ability to pick up subtle nuances in how hard or soft the keys are pressed. So having said all that, it’s pretty obvious that I bought the Roland FP-30. Yay! I bought the white one with matching “wooden” stand and 3 pedals. Sadly, they didn’t have the white finish in stock so they have to order it from Roland and will have it delivered next week. Really excited now! I'm not an expert player and this is my personal observation by the way. Just as a photographer, can take excellent pictures with a Nikon or a Canon camera, a musician will always make good music with either FP30 or P115. It just boils down to personal preference. I strongly suggest that you go to a store and try both models for yourself.
Thanks for the review. As a beginner I had the p115 in mind, but I love the sound of the fp30 much more! Especially when the man was playing from soft to loud, the fp30 sounded way detailed than the p115, which sounded fuzzier. I love Yamaha, but I think I will buy the Roland.
If you haven't accessed the P 115's touch control or the 18 layers of sound from a tight room to a concert hall, it is not fair to compare. The default on the P is different than the Roland, but once the touch and room features are adjusted, I felt all the dynamics and depth a concert grand would have. Just playing the default is not enough to make a decision. My P is going into the shop however, because three of the keys have a tinny sound, as if one string was out a hair on an acoustic. I like the fact it has a three year warranty.
How does the Roland hold up nowadays? Any problems with loose or rattling keys? Still satisfied with it? You can make the sound on the Roland more mellow with the featured settings right? I personally think (basing it on several videos) that the Roland seems to have a richer sound to my ears but I would like to have the option to mellow the sound a little bit if playing a certain type of song because the default sound seems somewhat tiring or overwhelming when going aggressive while the Yamaha seems underwhelming...
Awesome comparison!! After viewing this video I went out and bought a Steinway 9 foot grand for $75,000.00! My only complaint is it has no headphone jack, no rhythms, no layering capability, it's too large and heavy to throw in my civic and go gig with my homies, and I'm sure it's gonna go out of tune in a few months!! And it barely fits in my apartment!!
This is just my honest opinion. For me, every time he comes back to the Roland it's like a relief to my ears. The Yamaha has a good sound but the Roland is like "oh my, rich & sweet." I tune pianos for a living am always sensitive to the quality of sound I am getting out of the pianos. As he plays the Roland it kinda feels to me like you are in a room with a good piano and George Winston is playing. The high end of the Yamaha seems a little harsh.
I gotta disagree... It sounds like there's lots of attack with the Roland... The yamaha sounds softer on the ear... Its as if the yamaha is a solo instrument while the Roland is meant to be a part of a bigger set... Although... I would love the yamaha mid and high notes with the Roland bass end...
couldn't agree more. I feel it too. Its not that Yamaha is bad. Roland sounded like a big show is coming. Yamaha I need to wait for that rich feeling to come its just softer, but its not the kind when i listen to it i would like eww...
YES! Someone else with the same ears as me! I find the frequencies in other digital piano samples give me earache. Roland on the other hand is as you say "rich and sweet". That's why I bought the FP30 ;)
I'm a multi-instrumentalist, guitar, organ, and piano. I love how a '50's-'60's Gibson J45 dreadnaught acoustic guitar sings out with overtones fighting one another as much as meshing when I really hard-pick/strum wail on it, it sounds sweet, but _alive!_ . This is why I'd select the ROLAND FP30 over the Yamaha P-115. But I don't play that guitar style on piano. However the playing in this video falls into this category and the FP30 delivers! I like the tried and true warmth and all around great tone of the $650 KAWAI ES110 over the Yamaha P115 or the P125. I also prefer the KAWAI ES110 over the ROLAND FP30 _because_ I love classical/ baroque/ impressionism/1930's mellow standards primarily . *_However_* , I really love the true grand piano action, the incredible fullness, warmth, and upper partials ringing out on the new *FP30X* , this upgraded and improved model really has me sold on it! And the *ROLAND FP30X* is only $50 more than the ROLAND FP30. If I could afford it I'd get the Yamaha P515. It's incredible, but $1,500. And if I had $1,500 I might as well get the ROLAND RP701. The RP701 is a full console with 3 pedals and excellent tone on every voice.
The Yamaha sounds like a very well balanced synthesized piano, remarkably done across the 88 note range. The dynamics and harmonics are lackluster though. Roland's piano is much more lively and seems more sample based. The highest upper notes are very much like a real piano - possibly not as useful in performance as the Yamaha, but rarely called for in most music. The lower registers of the Roland are exceptional and I'm guessing the depth of the action allows much more harmonic expression. The Yamaha always has a similar bass tone, compressed and lacking in both the high and very low frequencies. In the Middle key range both keyboards work well, the Yamaha will probably cut through a mix of live instruments better but in solo listening I'd rather have the Roland's more dynamic tonality. A++ demo very well played selections.
Thank you for the excellent demonstration! I just bought the Yamaha, and I'm very pleased. I don't think you can go very far wrong between the Yamaha P115, Roland FP-30, and the Casio Privia... They're all quite good.
I bought Roland FP-30 a month ago and it has an amazing sound. I recommoned that piano. The touch of the keyboard is amazing too! Roland has a very deep and rich sound.

I own a FP30 for 1 year now ! With earphone plug into the sound is deep and awesome. I will make the same choice today if I had to. it's an amazing piano.

The Roland's EQ in the lower octaves has a boomy quality that perhaps cuts through a mix, but doesn't sound anything like a real piano. The Yamaha sounds like much more authentic. If I want that bass-heavy Roland-y sound, I can tweak the EQ myself. Also, the Yamaha has a "sound boost" feature that's designed specifically for ensemble playing for rock/country/pop, etc.
Or, if you want the more natural responding piano and don't like the bass-heavy sound, you can go with the Roland and EQ the bass-end to be a little lighter. This is what I will do.
I like the yamaha's darker sounding base. The Roland's base is also thunderous but on the brighter side. I prefer the darker growl of yamaha's base. It matches my soul.
I had the decision between those 2 pianos couple of weeks ago. Tested both in the music store for a while and for me as a beginner it feels like a huge difference between the quality of the keyboards. The Roland FP-30 is miles ahead of the Yamaha. Sound and everything else is fine on both i think, more of a matter of taste, but hell is the keyboard better on the FP-30. I am very happy that i tried out both before i decided.
The 'problem' with a Yamaha digital piano is that they sampled a Yamaha grand piano. Roland sampled a Steinway. In general a real Steinway sounds richer than a Yamaha grand piano. Particularly in the low-end.
Should I get Yamaha P125 or Roland FP 30? I really want to buy Roland based on many opinion that Roland has better key action, but in my country Roland FP 30 come without wood stand and 3 pedal at the same price

I did some time as assistant sound engineer for a 400-seat performance space and after watching this a few times I see: The P-115's sound is "sculpted" and thus would mix well in a multiple instrument setting, whereas the FP-30 sounds more raw and would be better suited for solo settings e.g. recitals. That said the FP-30 could work well in a multiple instrument setting too, but the live mix / studio mix would take a little more work. From the point of view of a piano player myself, I would buy both and use each according to different situations (though I don't have that kind of a budget :) )
Best sound comparison video ever! When looking at the video, I detected only a slight difference between the Yamaha & Roland grand piano sounds. Yamaha sounds a bit brighter. When I wasn't looking at the video, I literally couldn't detect a difference. Thank you, sir.
Yamaha sounds more as a realistic baby piano grand, good low-mids, and hammer sounds .....roland is brighter and much sub-low responsive, but sounds like a "pop music" piano sound. I'd prefered yamaha at all.
I own an FP-30 and my music teacher's practise piano is a P-115. The Roland keys have a little more resistance at the top while the Yamaha keys want to spring back more . The Roland keys are a little noisier. I prefer the sound of the Roland provided you don't use the built in speakers that add an unwanted stuffed pillow to the audio. The Yamaha sounds brighter and more synthetic to me. The Yamaha speakers are much better. Only through good headphones or a separate amp are the pianos as you hear them here. The Roland has more sounds including three pianos. The sustain on the Roland's default piano is less than the Yamaha's. If you get the proper stand and pedals for both; the Roland ones look like proper metal and have a nicer feel while Yamaha's are plastic but seem more robust. The grade of plastic that the Yamaha body is made of looks more solid too. Usually the Yamaha is slightly more expensive but special deals might make either much cheaper (as I write this the Yamaha is widely on offer at about 25% off.) I find it's like buying a car, your first one gets under your skin and breeds brand loyalty. Either would be a great learning tool.
Thanks for your video. I came across a 2nd hand P115 with the stand and pedals and this video clinched the deal. I think the Roland is great too, but it sounded a bit EQ’d for me, while the P115 has a natural tone. And this vid was the lighter of the grand piano voices.
Bought the FP-30! It'll be at home in two days!! What really made the difference for me was the key action and feel of it. Didn't really like the yamaha's action when I played it even though I was sure I wanted the p115 in the first place. But then the salesman comes to me and says I should try the FP-30... and whoa fell in love
I bought the fp30 5 months ago after comparing the keybed to the kawai es110 and some yamahas because it had the most weighted keys. Heavier than my upright piano but the other digital pianos were far more lighter than my piano so the fp30 seemed to me the closest to a piano. What a surprise today... at the same store with the same model i put my fingers on the fp30 and the keys were way lighter than mine! A close friend used to play my fp30 was at the store and i havnt said anything to him except to play something and at the first stroke to a key he noticed the change too. Im now looking for an answer. Maybe roland has changed the weight of the keys because people were complaining about the fp30 being too hard to press i remember. But i want to contrast if people with older fp30 feel the keys as heavy as me. The yamaha (p45 or the newer one maybe) today had heavier keys than the fp30 at the store. But my fp is heavier than the yamaha. The new fp30 was easier to play but I prefer the feel of mine... but im very surprised and looking for an explanation. Two items of the same model cant be so different if it isnt a design thing... could someone who has tried kawai roland and yamaha answer which one has the heavier keys?

I use for Jazz music. I clearly go for Yamaha. In my opinion Roland always had a big popular appeal, putting too much "metals" and brightness. Ok I have to explain I´m talking sound only (I once tried both, but in different times, so I cannot compare the touch of keys). I also believe one might compare prices and say "obviously" Roland should be better. I´m just honestly questioning all the "Brand power". When the guy plays the Chromatic scale one clearly can hear the sample groups, each 5~7 keys. On Yamaha it simply never happens, everything is very well balanced. Great video, congratulations for the e-muzyk team, thanks to the English subtitles I from Brazil can understand.
Of course Roland has richer sound but it's too bright. I think it's suitable as a rock or dance piano. Yamaha seems more realistic and natural, so it's probably suitable for classic and jazz.
Yamaha P115 has 3 piano variants: Grand Piano, Mellow Piano and Bright Piano. Honestly, in this video I thought the FP-30 sounded less bright than the Yamaha P115. FP-30 I think is a bit more mellow, which I enjoy. The Yamaha P115 does sound like it has more depth to it though, or at least on the sound settings he put them on. I myself have the P115 and think it sounds great, though it doesn't compare to a dedicated VST running on the computer.
I live in Iraq ... we have only Casio and Yamaha pianos here so Roland is not an option .... after I listened to this video I’m going to buy Roland fp30 online it sounds much better in my opinion .... great playing btw
To put this into supercars comparison logic, it is like comparing ferrari and lambo. Yamaha is the ferrari. If you know how ferrari sounds like, it roars. Whereas lambo being the roland, grunts instead of roar. While the grunting sound of lambo is magnificent, some prefer ferrari's music to the ears. Both magnificent but not the same. Boils down to preference. Just my comparison since I love both supercars and pianos. In no way am I professional. Just a humble opinion.

Спасибо огромное за такое яркое демонстрирование того, что у FP-30 более чувствительная клавиатура к силе и резкости нажатия, это прям заметно на сравнениях, P-125 звучит во время изменения силы нажатия менее восприимчиво и не настолько гибко изменяет выразительность звучания, в отличии от FP-30 который кажется прям идеально имитирует акустическую клавиатуру и механику молоточков. Меня расстроило что в P-125 нет аккордеона и гитары и это еще один минус Yamaha и огромный плюс Roland.
Great Comparision! Roland sounds more spectacular on the first Listening than the Yamaha. But after a while it sounded more like an Synth-/Sampler-Piano to me than the Yamaha did. The crisp Piano-Forte Sample on the Roland is a bit to present in my Opinion. On real Pianos that doesn't sound like this - at least on Pianos that I play...
Thats rightr ! If you buy your first car,it must have big wheels and a noisy sound until you discoverd that s@x in a Rolls is much better. Roland has bumpy low and twinkel high in every note and in the whole audiomarket you see that.A lot of artist dont play live on a Roland piano , why is that?Exactly
Pause between musics make our ears to adapt, but in 10:30 to 11:50, this non-stop changes in pianos show a huge gap in mid sounds, a lot better in Yamaha. But the lows of Roland are terrific, huge metalic bass sound... not much natural, but very, very beautiful! Someone can tell if a Roland Go Piano have exactly this Supernatural samples?

***** hey i just checked ur comment. i bought FP-30 at that moment, and playing almost everyday. actually im classic pianist, and just need one for practice at home keep silent, roland is much more awesome than i expected. it sound better when you are wear ur headphone(i use Sony MDR-7506) i also preferred Yamaha at all. but you should also try Roland. i can say that fp-30's key board and touch sense is way more better than Yamaha. :)

Thanks for this video. I got the Roland FP-30. Been a yamaha user before and I must say they are good but hammer action and response got the winning technology with Roland compared to the yamaha.
Roland offers more detail all across the range while Yamaha sounds muddy in comparison, especially in the lower bass notes. While Roland has a bit of a metallic quality to some of the notes which can be off putting for some, the dynamic and detailed sound makes it way more appealing to me. The Yamaha sounds somewhat outdated in comparison, as if they were using something that while sounding cheaper than both Kawai and Roland still leads the popularity contest because of its comparatively soothing character and perhaps because of Yamahas big reputation. It is obvious to my ears that both the Kawai ES110 and Roland FP30 sounds more highly defined (and therefor sounds more expensive)than Yamaha regardless of what one might think of the rest of the sound character.
To me the FP-30 sounds more fullbodied and richer. However, some people complain about it being a bit "metallic", but I found the P-115 to be a bit "thin". I have to choose between them and it's so difficult!! Which one has the best key action? I mean, the one most similar to an acoustic piano.
iseeu1980 As a long time yamaha user, I recommend Roland. Yamaha dynamics are very narrow and frustrating. Almost toyish. Many pop players wanabe will disagree.
I had a yamaha p120 that sounded amazing...very good dynamics...the harder you hit the keys, it not only increased volume and brightness obviously, but it sounded like the keys and tones were getting 'agitated'...as it should on a real piano. It seems the Roland wins this time with that aspect. My yamaha p120 is no longer, as i've tried to replace a key, and it went south rather quickly. Some keys started sticking (has Yamaha fixed this issue??) I'm a big Roland AND Yamaha fan btw. I know it's all about the piano sounds 95% of the time, but the Rhodes sound on the yamaha is better IMO. Much more dynamic. The Roland Rhodes has less expression...sounds like hard tines all the time, whereas the yamaha has a smooth to hard bite dynamic range. Wurli on both sounds pretty good though. One thing I noticed on my recently dead yamaha p120, is that when you layered the piano with strings, the strings wouldn't sustain the entire time, but kind of fade out if holding a long chord with the sustain pedal, which I loved actually....does the Roland treat the strings the same way?
Yamaha dinamics are narrow and frustrating? you're an IDIOT. this fp 30 sounds like CRAP are you fucking deaf? metallic sounds NOTHING LIKE A BALANCED PIANO. you're stupid. and I'm saying that despite the fact that i just ordered the fp 90 but that is completely other class.

In my opinion, I think Yamaha is better. It has a richer sound, better for classical music, ya know? The kind of music you hear and you fall in love with. Meanwhile Roland's sound is a little more upbeat. Both are good brands but this is just my opinion!
I just ordered a Roland FP-30 because it just sounds brighter than any other keyboard in its class. Mt Steinway just gave up the ghost (cracked and deformed sound board) - Can't complain, it was 100 years old. I searched all the high end digital pianos and came to the conclusion that for pure piano sound there is no need to go above the FP-30. I can't wait for it to come!
i've tried playing both in a music store and for me the Fp-30 has the better sound, more realistic the deeper tone sounds more like a real grand piano..on the other hand the yamaha sounds more like an average beginner piano...

It depends on the model. I feel more comfortable when playing my P-70 than PF-4. Roland has its own concept of sound and I just don't like it. :) Overall Yamaha's instruments sound brighter.
I like the Yamaha's sound much better ( based on the comments I think I may be in the minority). However I recently tried dozens of digital pianos back to back at my local music shop. What I discovered is that Roland hands down has better Keys and an over all more natural feel across all of their lines compared to Yamaha.
Depends on what character you want to give your sound. Both instruments are magnificent. I am stuck between the two. I think I prefer the Roland, but I can see how the Yamaha adds a character that the Roland can't imitate. The Roland has a marginally better soundtrack (based on personal taste) and a lighter press, but the Yamaha has more polyphony and more realistic feel that is appreciated when switching to a grand piano. Tough decision as to which to buy. Buy one now, and the other down the road. =P
Is it me but he seems to enjoy the Rowland more? The Rowland he is able to play with more dynamic range where as the Yamaha gives up in the very quiet passages.
I got FP-30 6 mnths ago and I love it, but... there are few things which could be improved: 1. Keyboard is a bit heavier and slower comparing to more expensive Roland pianos, 2. Piano Partner 2 app installed on Android tablet is a disaster - not connecting to the FP-30 through Bluetooth. Device is appearing on the devices list in Bluetooth settings but app itself cant find the piano, 3. Damper pedal DP-2 which comes with the piano is a total crap, after a few weeks of playing I have replaced it with Roland DP-10 which is actually great. 4. DO NOT THROW AWAY USER MANUAL - different settings are activated by key combination and there no way to remember all of them. LCDs are so cheap these days, it's a pity that Roland haven't used it, would be much easier to change settings. 5. Built in speakers are poor, good quality headphones highly recommended! Piano sounds are bright, crisp and beautiful.
I know from personal experience that the Yamaha has a kind of compression that keeps the piano from getting as loud as one plays. You can hear when he really bears down that, though the piano is getting brighter it is kind of smearing and not getting naturally louder. It is one of those things that really disappoints when you get your hands on it. And if you are playing with a band it is doubly discouraging.
Wow Its been 3 years now since I bought FP-30. I looked back at this video and I'm glad that I made the right choice. I played mostly Jazz songs and I just love how it sounds compared to Yamaha. But I will say this, I wish it has higher watt speakers.
I like the Yamahas sound slightly better, but i went to a shop and tried both, and i think the keyboard of the roland feels better. So I'm going for that. :)
Yamaha seems to roar whilst the Roland purrs along . Make from that which you will .... I suppose do you want a precision roarer or a precision purrer ? :)
Yamaha, Kawai etc are traditional piano makers. Thry had no connection to digital until they decided they wanted a piece of the digital pie. Roland has been making digital pianos since 1972 when Yamaha and kawai were stretching piano wires.
Just sharing my experience here, I used to own an old Yamaha CLP-920, I sometimes play the CLP-170 and CLP-220 at school, then I switched to a Roland RP-301 a few years ago, and I'm currently using a Roland RD-800 as my main piano. I also own a Yamaha M1 upright and often play Yamaha's CVP-700 series at the store. One thing I can tell you after 17 years of playing both acoustic and digital pianos is that right now Roland has better keys than Yamaha across all their product range. Roland's old PHA-4 feels better and more realistic than even Yamaha's NW-GH found on their flagship Clavinova CVP-709, especially the feedback and escapement. Roland's new PHA-50 feels more refined and quieter than the PHA-4.
As for the sound, Roland pianos sound more raw and less sampled (each note of the piano sounds, on the RD-800 in this case, has distinct characteristics and you can even tune individual notes to your liking) as if the mic is positioned close to the strings and hammer, while Yamaha (I'm using the CVP-705 for comparison) sounds warm and it's as if you're listening to an already mixed playback, that's why it's more pleasing to the ear for some. Roland digital pianos have very wide dynamic range, so you really feel in control on how expressive you want to play (this video showcases that pretty well, it's not the piano's position that makes the Yamaha sounds muted, the Roland just has far greater dynamic range). The sound characteristics is up to preference, but since Roland combines sampling and physical modeling, it's easier to customize the sound to your exact needs. Some tuning parameters are accessible on Roland's lower-end models that only exist in Yamaha's higher-end models.
After trying Roland pianos, I never consider to look back at Yamaha digital pianos. Yamaha makes top quality acoustic pianos, but their digital pianos just don't cut it for me, I'd rather get a Kawai digital piano with Grand Feel II action. Kawai digital pianos have mostly similar characteristics as Yamaha digital pianos but with key action that's in a whole new level and actually feels like a real grand piano. I'm hoping to get a Kawai digital piano in the future if I have the budget, I was seriously blown away by their GFII action, but I picked Roland because I just love their piano sound and I feel like what they offer fits exactly what I need. I think their digital pianos are underrated, but that's me. I hope this somewhat helps you decide what to look for.

I went to a music store in Toronto today to test both models since I’ve been debating over which one to buy for a while now. I tested both for the first time playing the same tune back to back and using a headphone provided by the store so the built-in speakers from the respective models don’t have anything to do with the differences of the sounds.
My observations:
I tested the FP30 first. At first, Roland’s key action (with that escapement) felt a little awkward (to me personally) so I decided to try the P115 instead. Indeed, the P115 felt more pleasant at first - but not for long! After a few minutes of playing the two instruments back and forth, the FP30 started to feel more natural and felt almost like a real acoustic piano. Also, at first, the FP30 sounded brighter while the P115 sounded a little sweeter (almost mellow). Then after after a few more minutes of playing, I’ve started to notice more obvious differences. The P115 sounds good from the middle keys up to the upper keys but I find the lower keys to be weaker compared to the FP30. On the other hand the FP 30 sounded more natural from the lower keys, middle and the higher keys. At this point, I was already leaning towards FP30.
I often play an acoustic grand piano (I’m not an expert player though) and during that comparison between the two models, I felt the Roland FP30’s key action felt closer to an acoustic piano than the P115’s.
Now the deciding factor came when I played an improvisation where I spontaneously decide how hard or soft would I press the keys. Hands down to the FP30!!! The keys and sound engine were so sensitive enough to capture subtle nuances. If I press the keys softly, Roland gives that natural soft and sweet acoustic piano sound in relation to the weight/degree of my pressing. The P115 however doesn’t feel as natural, it felt similar to playing a keyboard where you disable the touch sensitivity function. Of course it’s not as bad as that, but that is just to illustrate how I felt when I compared both models. In short, the FP-30 is more expressive. A big deciding factor for me.
Even though the P115 has more polyphony than the FP30, in the end, it really didn’t matter because the FP30 sounded much better and more natural than the P115. Again, based on my observation, I believe the reason why FP30 sounded more natural, is because of it’s ability to pick up subtle nuances in how hard or soft the keys are pressed.
So having said all that, it’s pretty obvious that I bought the Roland FP-30. Yay! I bought the white one with matching “wooden” stand and 3 pedals. Sadly, they didn’t have the white finish in stock so they have to order it from Roland and will have it delivered next week. Really excited now!
I'm not an expert player and this is my personal observation by the way. Just as a photographer, can take excellent pictures with a Nikon or a Canon camera, a musician will always make good music with either FP30 or P115. It just boils down to personal preference. I strongly suggest that you go to a store and try both models for yourself.

Thanks for the review. As a beginner I had the p115 in mind, but I love the sound of the fp30 much more! Especially when the man was playing from soft to loud, the fp30 sounded way detailed than the p115, which sounded fuzzier. I love Yamaha, but I think I will buy the Roland.
If you haven't accessed the P 115's touch control or the 18 layers of sound from a tight room to a concert hall, it is not fair to compare. The default on the P is different than the Roland, but once the touch and room features are adjusted, I felt all the dynamics and depth a concert grand would have. Just playing the default is not enough to make a decision. My P is going into the shop however, because three of the keys have a tinny sound, as if one string was out a hair on an acoustic. I like the fact it has a three year warranty.
How does the Roland hold up nowadays? Any problems with loose or rattling keys? Still satisfied with it?
You can make the sound on the Roland more mellow with the featured settings right?
I personally think (basing it on several videos) that the Roland seems to have a richer sound to my ears but I would like to have the option to mellow the sound a little bit if playing a certain type of song because the default sound seems somewhat tiring or overwhelming when going aggressive while the Yamaha seems underwhelming...

Awesome comparison!! After viewing this video I went out and bought a Steinway 9 foot grand for $75,000.00! My only complaint is it has no headphone jack, no rhythms, no layering capability, it's too large and heavy to throw in my civic and go gig with my homies, and I'm sure it's gonna go out of tune in a few months!! And it barely fits in my apartment!!

This is just my honest opinion. For me, every time he comes back to the Roland it's like a relief to my ears. The Yamaha has a good sound but the Roland is like "oh my, rich & sweet." I tune pianos for a living am always sensitive to the quality of sound I am getting out of the pianos. As he plays the Roland it kinda feels to me like you are in a room with a good piano and George Winston is playing. The high end of the Yamaha seems a little harsh.

YES! Someone else with the same ears as me! I find the frequencies in other digital piano samples give me earache. Roland on the other hand is as you say "rich and sweet". That's why I bought the FP30 ;)
I'm a multi-instrumentalist, guitar, organ, and piano. I love how a '50's-'60's Gibson J45 dreadnaught acoustic guitar sings out with overtones fighting one another as much as meshing when I really hard-pick/strum wail on it, it sounds sweet, but _alive!_ . This is why I'd select the ROLAND FP30 over the Yamaha P-115. But I don't play that guitar style on piano. However the playing in this video falls into this category and the FP30 delivers! I like the tried and true warmth and all around great tone of the $650 KAWAI ES110 over the Yamaha P115 or the P125. I also prefer the KAWAI ES110 over the ROLAND FP30 _because_ I love classical/ baroque/ impressionism/1930's mellow standards primarily .
*_However_* , I really love the true grand piano action, the incredible fullness, warmth, and upper partials ringing out on the new *FP30X* , this upgraded and improved model really has me sold on it! And the *ROLAND FP30X* is only $50 more than the ROLAND FP30. If I could afford it I'd get the Yamaha P515. It's incredible, but $1,500. And if I had $1,500 I might as well get the ROLAND RP701. The RP701 is a full console with 3 pedals and excellent tone on every voice.
The Yamaha sounds like a very well balanced synthesized piano, remarkably done across the 88 note range. The dynamics and harmonics are lackluster though. Roland's piano is much more lively and seems more sample based. The highest upper notes are very much like a real piano - possibly not as useful in performance as the Yamaha, but rarely called for in most music. The lower registers of the Roland are exceptional and I'm guessing the depth of the action allows much more harmonic expression. The Yamaha always has a similar bass tone, compressed and lacking in both the high and very low frequencies. In the Middle key range both keyboards work well, the Yamaha will probably cut through a mix of live instruments better but in solo listening I'd rather have the Roland's more dynamic tonality. A++ demo very well played selections.

The Roland's EQ in the lower octaves has a boomy quality that perhaps cuts through a mix, but doesn't sound anything like a real piano. The Yamaha sounds like much more authentic. If I want that bass-heavy Roland-y sound, I can tweak the EQ myself. Also, the Yamaha has a "sound boost" feature that's designed specifically for ensemble playing for rock/country/pop, etc.
Or, if you want the more natural responding piano and don't like the bass-heavy sound, you can go with the Roland and EQ the bass-end to be a little lighter. This is what I will do.
I like the yamaha's darker sounding base. The Roland's base is also thunderous but on the brighter side. I prefer the darker growl of yamaha's base. It matches my soul.

I had the decision between those 2 pianos couple of weeks ago. Tested both in the music store for a while and for me as a beginner it feels like a huge difference between the quality of the keyboards. The Roland FP-30 is miles ahead of the Yamaha. Sound and everything else is fine on both i think, more of a matter of taste, but hell is the keyboard better on the FP-30. I am very happy that i tried out both before i decided.
The 'problem' with a Yamaha digital piano is that they sampled a Yamaha grand piano. Roland sampled a Steinway. In general a real Steinway sounds richer than a Yamaha grand piano. Particularly in the low-end.

Roland's dynamic range is MUCH greater. Very expressive instrument.
I did some time as assistant sound engineer for a 400-seat performance space and after watching this a few times I see: The P-115's sound is "sculpted" and thus would mix well in a multiple instrument setting, whereas the FP-30 sounds more raw and would be better suited for solo settings e.g. recitals. That said the FP-30 could work well in a multiple instrument setting too, but the live mix / studio mix would take a little more work. From the point of view of a piano player myself, I would buy both and use each according to different situations (though I don't have that kind of a budget :) )

Best sound comparison video ever! When looking at the video, I detected only a slight difference between the Yamaha & Roland grand piano sounds. Yamaha sounds a bit brighter. When I wasn't looking at the video, I literally couldn't detect a difference. Thank you, sir.
Yamaha sounds more as a realistic baby piano grand, good low-mids, and hammer sounds .....roland is brighter and much sub-low responsive, but sounds like a "pop music" piano sound. I'd prefered yamaha at all.

I own an FP-30 and my music teacher's practise piano is a P-115. The Roland keys have a little more resistance at the top while the Yamaha keys want to spring back more . The Roland keys are a little noisier. I prefer the sound of the Roland provided you don't use the built in speakers that add an unwanted stuffed pillow to the audio. The Yamaha sounds brighter and more synthetic to me. The Yamaha speakers are much better. Only through good headphones or a separate amp are the pianos as you hear them here. The Roland has more sounds including three pianos. The sustain on the Roland's default piano is less than the Yamaha's. If you get the proper stand and pedals for both; the Roland ones look like proper metal and have a nicer feel while Yamaha's are plastic but seem more robust. The grade of plastic that the Yamaha body is made of looks more solid too. Usually the Yamaha is slightly more expensive but special deals might make either much cheaper (as I write this the Yamaha is widely on offer at about 25% off.) I find it's like buying a car, your first one gets under your skin and breeds brand loyalty. Either would be a great learning tool.
Thanks for your video. I came across a 2nd hand P115 with the stand and pedals and this video clinched the deal. I think the Roland is great too, but it sounded a bit EQ’d for me, while the P115 has a natural tone. And this vid was the lighter of the grand piano voices.
Bought the FP-30! It'll be at home in two days!! What really made the difference for me was the key action and feel of it. Didn't really like the yamaha's action when I played it even though I was sure I wanted the p115 in the first place. But then the salesman comes to me and says I should try the FP-30... and whoa fell in love

I bought the fp30 5 months ago after comparing the keybed to the kawai es110 and some yamahas because it had the most weighted keys. Heavier than my upright piano but the other digital pianos were far more lighter than my piano so the fp30 seemed to me the closest to a piano. What a surprise today... at the same store with the same model i put my fingers on the fp30 and the keys were way lighter than mine! A close friend used to play my fp30 was at the store and i havnt said anything to him except to play something and at the first stroke to a key he noticed the change too. Im now looking for an answer. Maybe roland has changed the weight of the keys because people were complaining about the fp30 being too hard to press i remember. But i want to contrast if people with older fp30 feel the keys as heavy as me. The yamaha (p45 or the newer one maybe) today had heavier keys than the fp30 at the store. But my fp is heavier than the yamaha. The new fp30 was easier to play but I prefer the feel of mine... but im very surprised and looking for an explanation. Two items of the same model cant be so different if it isnt a design thing... could someone who has tried kawai roland and yamaha answer which one has the heavier keys?

I use for Jazz music. I clearly go for Yamaha. In my opinion Roland always had a big popular appeal, putting too much "metals" and brightness.
Ok I have to explain I´m talking sound only (I once tried both, but in different times, so I cannot compare the touch of keys). I also believe one might compare prices and say "obviously" Roland should be better. I´m just honestly questioning all the "Brand power".
When the guy plays the Chromatic scale one clearly can hear the sample groups, each 5~7 keys. On Yamaha it simply never happens, everything is very well balanced.

Of course Roland has richer sound but it's too bright. I think it's suitable as a rock or dance piano. Yamaha seems more realistic and natural, so it's probably suitable for classic and jazz.

Yamaha P115 has 3 piano variants: Grand Piano, Mellow Piano and Bright Piano. Honestly, in this video I thought the FP-30 sounded less bright than the Yamaha P115. FP-30 I think is a bit more mellow, which I enjoy. The Yamaha P115 does sound like it has more depth to it though, or at least on the sound settings he put them on.
I myself have the P115 and think it sounds great, though it doesn't compare to a dedicated VST running on the computer.
I live in Iraq ... we have only Casio and Yamaha pianos here so Roland is not an option .... after I listened to this video I’m going to buy Roland fp30 online it sounds much better in my opinion .... great playing btw
To put this into supercars comparison logic, it is like comparing ferrari and lambo. Yamaha is the ferrari. If you know how ferrari sounds like, it roars. Whereas lambo being the roland, grunts instead of roar. While the grunting sound of lambo is magnificent, some prefer ferrari's music to the ears. Both magnificent but not the same. Boils down to preference. Just my comparison since I love both supercars and pianos. In no way am I professional. Just a humble opinion.

Спасибо огромное за такое яркое демонстрирование того, что у FP-30 более чувствительная клавиатура к силе и резкости нажатия, это прям заметно на сравнениях, P-125 звучит во время изменения силы нажатия менее восприимчиво и не настолько гибко изменяет выразительность звучания, в отличии от FP-30 который кажется прям идеально имитирует акустическую клавиатуру и механику молоточков. Меня расстроило что в P-125 нет аккордеона и гитары и это еще один минус Yamaha и огромный плюс Roland.

Great Comparision! Roland sounds more spectacular on the first Listening than the Yamaha. But after a while it sounded more like an Synth-/Sampler-Piano to me than the Yamaha did. The crisp Piano-Forte Sample on the Roland is a bit to present in my Opinion. On real Pianos that doesn't sound like this - at least on Pianos that I play...

Roland has bumpy low and twinkel high in every note and in the whole audiomarket you see that.A lot of artist dont play live on a Roland piano , why is that?Exactly

Pause between musics make our ears to adapt, but in 10:30 to 11:50, this non-stop changes in pianos show a huge gap in mid sounds, a lot better in Yamaha.
But the lows of Roland are terrific, huge metalic bass sound... not much natural, but very, very beautiful!

Thanks for this video. I got the Roland FP-30. Been a yamaha user before and I must say they are good but hammer action and response got the winning technology with Roland compared to the yamaha.
Roland offers more detail all across the range while Yamaha sounds muddy in comparison, especially in the lower bass notes.
While Roland has a bit of a metallic quality to some of the notes which can be off putting for some, the dynamic and detailed sound makes it way more appealing to me.
The Yamaha sounds somewhat outdated in comparison, as if they were using something that while sounding cheaper than both Kawai and Roland still leads the popularity contest because of its comparatively soothing character and perhaps because of Yamahas big reputation.
It is obvious to my ears that both the Kawai ES110 and Roland FP30 sounds more highly defined (and therefor sounds more expensive)than Yamaha regardless of what one might think of the rest of the sound character.

To me the FP-30 sounds more fullbodied and richer. However, some people complain about it being a bit "metallic", but I found the P-115 to be a bit "thin". I have to choose between them and it's so difficult!! Which one has the best key action? I mean, the one most similar to an acoustic piano.
iseeu1980 As a long time yamaha user, I recommend Roland. Yamaha dynamics are very narrow and frustrating. Almost toyish. Many pop players wanabe will disagree.
I had a yamaha p120 that sounded amazing...very good dynamics...the harder you hit the keys, it not only increased volume and brightness obviously, but it sounded like the keys and tones were getting 'agitated'...as it should on a real piano. It seems the Roland wins this time with that aspect. My yamaha p120 is no longer, as i've tried to replace a key, and it went south rather quickly. Some keys started sticking (has Yamaha fixed this issue??)
I'm a big Roland AND Yamaha fan btw. I know it's all about the piano sounds 95% of the time, but the Rhodes sound on the yamaha is better IMO. Much more dynamic. The Roland Rhodes has less expression...sounds like hard tines all the time, whereas the yamaha has a smooth to hard bite dynamic range. Wurli on both sounds pretty good though.
One thing I noticed on my recently dead yamaha p120, is that when you layered the piano with strings, the strings wouldn't sustain the entire time, but kind of fade out if holding a long chord with the sustain pedal, which I loved actually....does the Roland treat the strings the same way?
Yamaha dinamics are narrow and frustrating? you're an IDIOT. this fp 30 sounds like CRAP are you fucking deaf? metallic sounds NOTHING LIKE A BALANCED PIANO. you're stupid. and I'm saying that despite the fact that i just ordered the fp 90 but that is completely other class.

In my opinion, I think Yamaha is better. It has a richer sound, better for classical music, ya know? The kind of music you hear and you fall in love with. Meanwhile Roland's sound is a little more upbeat. Both are good brands but this is just my opinion!
I just ordered a Roland FP-30 because it just sounds brighter than any other keyboard in its class. Mt Steinway just gave up the ghost (cracked and deformed sound board) - Can't complain, it was 100 years old. I searched all the high end digital pianos and came to the conclusion that for pure piano sound there is no need to go above the FP-30. I can't wait for it to come!
i've tried playing both in a music store and for me the Fp-30 has the better sound, more realistic the deeper tone sounds more like a real grand piano..on the other hand the yamaha sounds more like an average beginner piano...

Thank you for this demo. Think this helped the FP-30 win me over the Kawai es110. No comparison between the Yamaha and the Roland. The Rowland is way richer to my ear! That “supernatural technology” seems to actually be more than a marketing gimmick!! Thanks again!
The FP-30 is really good for the price and it is a new roland PHA4 , sound amazing!

I like the Yamaha's sound much better ( based on the comments I think I may be in the minority). However I recently tried dozens of digital pianos back to back at my local music shop. What I discovered is that Roland hands down has better Keys and an over all more natural feel across all of their lines compared to Yamaha.
Why does the Roland sound so much brighter/richer? Is the mic a different quality that is recording it or something?

Depends on what character you want to give your sound. Both instruments are magnificent. I am stuck between the two. I think I prefer the Roland, but I can see how the Yamaha adds a character that the Roland can't imitate.
The Roland has a marginally better soundtrack (based on personal taste) and a lighter press, but the Yamaha has more polyphony and more realistic feel that is appreciated when switching to a grand piano.
Tough decision as to which to buy. Buy one now, and the other down the road. =P

Is it me but he seems to enjoy the Rowland more? The Rowland he is able to play with more dynamic range where as the Yamaha gives up in the very quiet passages.

I got FP-30 6 mnths ago and I love it, but... there are few things which could be improved:
1. Keyboard is a bit heavier and slower comparing to more expensive Roland pianos,
2. Piano Partner 2 app installed on Android tablet is a disaster - not connecting to the FP-30 through Bluetooth. Device is appearing on the devices list in Bluetooth settings but app itself cant find the piano,
3. Damper pedal DP-2 which comes with the piano is a total crap, after a few weeks of playing I have replaced it with Roland DP-10 which is actually great.
4. DO NOT THROW AWAY USER MANUAL - different settings are activated by key combination and there no way to remember all of them. LCDs are so cheap these days, it's a pity that Roland haven't used it, would be much easier to change settings.
5. Built in speakers are poor, good quality headphones highly recommended!

I know from personal experience that the Yamaha has a kind of compression that keeps the piano from getting as loud as one plays. You can hear when he really bears down that, though the piano is getting brighter it is kind of smearing and not getting naturally louder. It is one of those things that really disappoints when you get your hands on it. And if you are playing with a band it is doubly discouraging.
Wow Its been 3 years now since I bought FP-30. I looked back at this video and I'm glad that I made the right choice. I played mostly Jazz songs and I just love how it sounds compared to Yamaha. But I will say this, I wish it has higher watt speakers.

I wish I had bought the Roland Fp30 instead of the Yamaha P115. I bought my P115 a year ago, and I’m already having technical issues with it.

Yamaha, Kawai etc are traditional piano makers. Thry had no connection to digital until they decided they wanted a piece of the digital pie. Roland has been making digital pianos since 1972 when Yamaha and kawai were stretching piano wires.
