I was 9 years old when we took my 19 year old brother to Love Field Airport in Dallas Texas in 1969 to send him off to Vietnam. I cried all the way home thinking I would never see him or his twin brother (who was already in Vietnam) again. He was Air Force and the other brother was Marine. I remember our mama praying everyday for them. They will both be 74 years old in February.

Dad was a quiet man. He was so angry when I went airborne. I came home on leave, and we actually drank enough that he told me what he went through. To all you Vietnam veterans. I truly thank you for your service. The way my father was treated when he came home is absolutely heartbreaking. I came back from desert storm and got a parade. He was spit on in San Francisco just for wearing a uniform. You are heroes to me. God bless and thank you.

Some of the ignorance at that time. I enlisted in the Navy in 72 and within a year had been called baby killer more than once and I hadn't even left the country yet! My 1st deployment was aboard the USS Enterprise CVAN-65 in 74-75 so I saw the end. As a vet, I was part of a motorcycle association. that was proud to "Welcome Home" the desert storm and other vets.

I was married to a combat vet. Big Red One - First Infantry Div. 66-68 He is no longer with us. I waited for him faithfully, but when he came home he was 'different'. Our marriage didn't survive. But we stayed friends until he died suddenly at age 68 in 2013. I know he suffered all those years, but kept it inside. I think of him often and all his fellow vets. These songs are priceless. @@mygoddess1 So sorry to hear that about your husband. (I didn't know it was called "Dixon") But then I wasn't with my former husband in his later years. I hope you do have some good memories. Those vets from 'Nam just had it so bad. I loved my former husband until he passed even though I wasn't with him - he'd remarried and had a family. Best wishes to you too.

My uncle was never the same after the the Vietnam war. He stayed away from us for 10 years after his time was over. He did not bother to come straight home. He just disappeared. He finally came home. Just showed up at my grandmothers doorstep. He was so different and so quiet most of the time. He eventually came around and talked to us about his experiences. I will never forget the look in his eyes as he told the stories. I salute all of you who endured that war. Any war. But the Vietnam war was....different. You all are not forgotten

Respect to the vets. Respectfully to you, The Vietnam War was not different or significantly more tragic, war is war. It was publicized differently and the press at the time had the freedom to document and criticize it freely. That has only happened once, and we civilians got a glimpse of what war really is. Make no mistake, the rate of killing, destruction, and gruesome civilian death was tenfolds higher in WW1 and WW2.

My lottery number never came up. I hired a Vietnam veteran in my business who had been a gunner on a Huey. Sometimes at work he would freeze, go out of the office and come back after 15 or 20 minutes. I never asked but I know he was dealing with flashbacks or consequences of his time in Vietnam. Nothing but respect for those that served. I also have a friend who was a medic in Vietnam and he is one of the most humble, understanding men I know. Again, nothing but respect. My Uncle fought in WWII in the Battle of the Buldge. A friend of my father was a captain in WWII - truly a man's man. My father was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. I grew up watching Veterans struggle. It wasn't a War about winning in my eyes. It was men standing up for each other. I know of Infantry men who came back from Vietnam, changed their MO became pilots and returned to Vietnam to rescue their buddies. Despite what some of the movies portray, that wasn't the case in all situations. Vietnam Veterans are a different kind of hero. They rescued each other, when their country was loosing their minds. You weren't fighting for your country, you were fighting for each other. When I hear that term Maverick, I think of Vietnam Veterans. You guys got yourselves a memorial before WW2 Veterans got theirs. You are a powerhouse.

I’m an Afghan war vet, us marines. I can say with full confidence that Vietnam vets are held in the highest regard in the veteran community. NOBODY ever had it worse than they did! Many of them weren’t even volunteers but they didn’t flee to Canada. The war itself was horrific but somehow doesn’t get the same respect as WW2. It was certainly an unnecessary war but so was the one I was in. And because of what these guys all went through the support the troops movement was started. I’m truly grateful for their sacrifices bc there isn’t a Vietnam vet who hasn’t made a huge sacrifice. And for that, I got treated by respect twice by the Maine troop greeters, someone gave me a fucking phone so I could call my wife, a stranger just gave me a phone with prepaid minutes on it! A far cry from what these guys had to deal with.

An interesting occurence two weeks ago, I was fishing off a pier under the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, SC; an Oriental family came up to me and asked where I had been stationed in Vietnam - was wearing a VN Vet ballcap - they were Vietnamese currently living in Boston and visiting a daughter her in SC - they thanked me for my service in their county; a first for me. We talked for an hour and all had a good time reminiscing - the father had been an ARVN Ranger.

My dad just passed away Tuesday. He joined the USAF in 1948. He went straight to Berlin Germany. For the Berlin Airlift. He served 21 and a half years. He Retired in 69. He kept saying Korea was the forgotten war. When he retired he had had enough. He said he was tired. He lost many buddies throughout all those years but the most during Nam. He told me many things he saw and went through. But there were things he couldn't talk about at all. RIP dad. 💔 I dated a Vietnam Vet. He was paralyzed from the war. He was permanently in a wheel chair. I loved that man. He always worried what people were thinking of when they saw us together. I told him I didnt care about others. Only him. He always wondered what he would take for pain after his body became resistant to the morphine. I would hold him, often. He could literally cry red tears. That is when he allowed himself to. I am surprised Inna da Goda davida isnt on this list. He always called that and many more songs his jungle music. 💔

I grew up around Vietnam vets. One of my favorite teachers was a chopper pilot who barely made it home and only kept his leg because of sheer stubborn will and walks with a brace to this day. My uncle and a couple people who bought hay from us carried scars from their time in country, some you couldn't see. My mom told me about classmates who came home very different or didn't come home at all. One made it through a harrowing tour and died at the stop sign a mile from his house on his way home and never got to see his family again. She told me how many of them were treated when they got home, and when my classmates started going to Iraq and Afghanistan, she made sure my generation learned from the mistakes of hers. She also told me about a sweet and gentle neighbor who walked into the shop when his number came up and cut his trigger finger off with a saw so he wouldn't have to hurt anyone. She told me about other kids who burned draft cards and took off.
I'm 35 years old and have spent more time reading and talking about the Vietnam War than 95% of people born after it ended. I'm nobody, just a dirt farmer from PA, but to everyone who didn't hear it when they got off the freedom bird, welcome home and thank you for your service, and I'm sorry for the things you had to see, do, and endure while you were there on our behalf.
And to every one of you who stood by your convictions and fought the system to not go over there, I respect you for the sacrifices you made to stand up for what you believed in, too.

After 7 months, my outfit was pulled from the field and sent back to the World. In that time in Nam, the battaion was awarded 670 Purple Heart Medals, which means we had almost 100 casualties a month during our time in combat. I was only one of the wounded.

I was drafted out of college in 1968. At the time I had been married for about a week. Did my basic at Ft Benning, Ga. At the end of basic, like everyone else I stood on the parade field for orders. One after another got the call for Vietnam. When it came my turn, I was sent to Ft Momouth, NJ for Crypto school. I was stunned. After graduating Crypto school, once again, I was on a parade field awating orders and again, one after another got the call for Vietnam. When my turn came, they sent me to Germany. It was surreal. 1971 was my last year in the Army. That was over 50 years ago now and I still carry the guilt for being so furtunate. Even today, I can recite all my firends that were killed over there and they are still dying from the effects of agent orange. It's been a never ending sadness for me These songs bring it back to 50 years ago. I am so sorry.

My hubby left for Vietnam in 66 at age 19 and we had been married a month when he got his papers! He came home in 67….and long year, but I gladly waited! We celebrate 58 yrs this October, 2024. I use to send him 45 records….i had sent him a record player. Music is what got me through! He was an engineer over there,..he told me the Viet Cong would blow up the bridges, and he would build them back again! He was in Bien Hoa…he got out a month before TET….thank God! He did have a stroke in 2019 that I believe was from Agent Orange…..not a fun place for our guys! He never talked about being there except to another Vietnam veteran….he would hit the floor when he heard a car backfire…that is when I realized he had really been through more than I knew. The only time he ever left the compound mortar hit his tent and destroyed his pillow. The guys all got Purple Hearts, but because he was gone he escaped the force of the blast..all had been asleep when it hit. There is a God, and he made sure my hubby would be gone that night. Thanks for letting me share….God bless all you Vietnam veterans. You have my love! 🇺🇸❤️…..I would listen to San Francisco over and over because I knew my hubby would be coming home via that city….not a pleasant homecoming for most…he talked about getting spit at, and made fun of….he wouldn’t tell anyone he had been there…just had to add that!

My uncle John did three tours in Vietnam. We lived in California, and we’d pick him up at either LAX or El Toro Marine Air Base when he’d come home on leave. On one occasion , he was still in his fatigues: he still had mud on his boots! He also had bandages and a suture on his arm and on his abdomen. There had been a VC mortar attack on Ton son Nhut airport just as he was getting ready to board a plane “back to the world”, and even shrapnel wounds weren’t enough to stop him. I'm a Vietnamese and my grandfather used to serve in the People's Army of Vietnam (or Vietcong as many people have called it). When he was alive, he told me stories about the war and used the most hateful and disgusting words to describe the US Army. I don't know if any of these stories were true and I don't really care about it. I know that these memories are better be forgotten as it won't bring glory and pride to my grandfather or anyone who was in the war. Anyway, when I read the comments from US Veterans, I feel sympathy as they also fought for their beloved country like my grandfather did. Even though my grandfather and they used to fight on opposite sides, I still dignify the US Vets and what they have been through. It's my pleasure to know and understand the experience and stories of people from both sides of the war. As an individual of the young generation of Vietnam, I'm sure that you guys are more than welcome to visit Vietnam one day.

I think it is true of most countries that the people are generally good. There are always bad apples, but most people are good people. It is the Governments that place us in horrible situations where we attack or defend our countries. This creates hatred that is unnecessary. Respect goes out to all who were placed in a position of fighting for their country. They saw some horrible sights and many suffered physically and mentally. I am thankful for their sacrifices, but also grateful that I am in a free country at the moment. I hope we never see war. My heart goes out to those who are currently at war. Respect to you, my friend. God bless you.

A third of the vietnamese population died either directly from the atrocities committed by both sides or the effects of chemical warfare perpetrated by the US. I had an uncle who were in the danish resistance during WWII and he never left his hate for germans behind him.. It basically defined the rest of his life.. I know a lot of germans and I like them, their culture and their manners, however I can understand why someone has a hard time giving up their hate, it can become a thing that gives meaning to the meaningless cruelty we can do upon eachother..

But about 15 or 20 years ago, I had my dog tags on my key chain and a tiny little old lady was looking at them and "Excuse me, dear, were you in the service?" I paused but said "Yes, ma'am, Vietnam" She said "Thank you for your service!"
I was stunned. I'd never heard that before. It made me cry and now I wear my Vietnam Veteran t-shirts and my cap proudly! I did serve 4 years and made it!

Welcome home brother. I too was there in the 70's, I left my youth and sole there and came home to a new time. It wasn't the same. People even drank a different beer then when I left. I tried so hard to get my life back the way it was but that never happened. It was like all my old friends still knew me but deep down could see all the blood, sadness, pain, and gilt in my eyes. I was once the one everyone wanted to be with but now it was as if they were afraid of me and would step aside whenever I came near them. Even my mother said I became cold.
Most of my old friends are now gone and the nights are so lonely for me, I just sit alone now still trying and hoping for my youth to come back. Scars of war never leave they just get covered up. I'm not sure if the music helps or hurts me but it does make me remember my youth as well as the pain we suffered.
Without knowing you you will be my brother for life. Be safe my new friend.
People say the last man standing wins. I say bullshit to that, the last man standing stands alone.

I am 77. This music is the music of my life. It brought back so many memories. My first husband was “drafted” as a civilian engineer to the Naval Air Systems Command. He suicided in 1981. My second husband was Air Force, a parachute rigger and later Safety Specialist. He passed after a series of strokes 5 years ago. He lost a New York State Regents Scholarship to Cornell University. He was a foster child and that scholarship meant a lot to him. He never recovered from that. He enlisted 2 weeks ahead of being drafted. He grew up in West Chester County, New York, the foster son of a house painter. He was asthmatic and had other health issues but they passed him for his physical. Lt Bone Spurs didn’t have to be bothered by the draft. Nor did the sons of other West Chester County residents.
I lost childhood friends and adult friends to that war by death in Nam, by suicide back home, through PTSD, agent orange, losing limbs and then themselves. And for what?

Russia took 0 percent of Ukraine (Crimea during Obama and parts of Ukraine during Biden). Not to mention all the other turmoil during D presidencies, Yemen, Iran vs Israel or the Abraham accords and relative peace in the the "bone spurs" administration. I must say some of these comments have brought me to tears. My hearts go out to all of you personally affected by this war. My brothers were born in 1945 and 1950. I was born in 1955. Both of my brothers avoided being in the war, to my great relief. My oldest brother joined the California Highway Patrol in 1966. He was sent to work some of the anti-war protests during the Vietnam years. He missed my 8th grade graduation because of a protest he had to work. But being on the CHP kept him out of the war. He served nearly 40 years on the CHP before retiring. He is 78 years now and deservedly living peacefully on his 3 acres of land. Our grandfather served in the US Navy during WWI in submarines. Our father served during WWII in the US Marines, 1st Div, Amphibious. He made the first landing on Guadalcanal. He got so sick from malaria and dysentery that after being taken off the island and sent to Australia to recover, he was sent back to the States and was used as an instructor. His attitude was so good. He often said that getting malaria probably saved his life, because he was not sent on to other Pacific battles. But he did go on to serve on the Los Angeles Police Dept for 30 years, being awarded the Medal of Valor for rescuing a family of four from a burning vehicle. He also worked the 1965 Watts Riots, which he said was almost scarier than making the landing on Guadalcanal. To my great heartache, he passed away in 2012 at 91 years of age.💔A life well lived.

If the young American kids had not fallen to tge enemy plot in the USA to drug them up, make them promiscuous and in their ear to protest the war so that you'd lose that war which was an attempt to stop the advancement of communism so you wouldn't have to fight it on your own turf! Americans failed to back their troops repeating what the enemy propaganda said. Russia and China were giving their aid to North Vietnam so why shouldn't the US aid south Vietnam? And unfortunately your weak leaders who only want votes caved in and did what the morons on the streets told them to do. Hero's? Our government lied to us (remember the Pentagon Papers?) and led us to believe that the Communists would take over all of SE Asia. They didn't. Now the Vietnamese want us to invest in their country. Communist? Only in name. Mostly just another tinpot dictatorship with bad administration. Unfortunately we had to lose over 50K men to learn our lesson...

@@brad4428 it's true. Our government is known for lying. It's the unfortunate reality of democracy however, it doesn't make the soldiers any less brave regardless of our leadership. And for the record, communism governs the majority or Asia not just in the southeastern regions. There's cultural genocide going on all the time. We just don't hear about it much. Therefore it doesn't matter why we went or if it was justified. Those guys went through hell and came home to nothing. Yah I'd say they deserve more.

At 17yrs old I entered my basic training before going to Vietnam for two tours as a Huey Crew Chief in the 25th Infantry and 1st Aviation Brigade. I was raised with this era of music because both my parents grew up and were teenagers-young adults during the span theses songs were new and popular. I grew up with my older brother and I being obsessed with anything Military related when we were kids. The surplus store was our favorite place. War and action movies were our go to. Our parents divorced when my bother and I were 8 and 4. When I was the ages from 5-8 my mother was dating her best friend since childhoods older brother. He was a Vietnam Combat Veteran along with one of his brothers. Both made it back home. His brother died of a Heroin overdose in the late 90’s or early 2000’s. He also struggled with addiction problems. He had a handful of DUI’s and I remember when he’d come to my moms he’d always smell like skunk. At that age I didn’t know it was cannabis. I know now that cannabis helps with PTSD symptoms. As does heroin, unfortunately I personally found that out too. I grew up with his War stories and was fascinated by them. It was better than the movies to me because it seemed realer. The Vietnam War and those that fought in it were my idols. I looked up to all them and my mothers boyfriend specially because he was more than just some Vet, he was family. He was a big inspiration for me to join the Army during the time Iraq and Afghanistan were getting sent more troops that they named the surge. I never got to tell him that and he has recently past away. I had plenty of time but have been dealing with mental health issues along with addiction issues that has lead me into homelessness a handful of time in the past 13 years. Starting pretty much as soon as I got out of the Army I’d say. I did only one deployment to Iraq with the 25th Infantry Division, in 2nd Brigade 11th Field Artillery Regiment. Left Oahu Hawaii for Kuwait in October 2007 for more training before flying into Iraq then helicoptering into Camp Taji on December 23, just two days before Christmas. I ended up turning 21 while in Iraq, so I didn’t get wasted like most do on that day. But that didn’t bother me one bit. I signed up for 3 1/2 years and in active duty and got out of the Army. Had a mental breakdown not to long after being out and screwed myself from any chance of returning. I had major resentments over that. Which lead me to spiral out of control. That was 12 years ago. Alls I can say about struggling is that before anything gets better, things have to get worse first. The Creator’s way of teaching us what we need to learn to be successful on our path’s.

This is what happens when Democrats are in charge I waiting for Biden gets use onto a war we all have a war at the southern border they don't want to fix. I really would like to see the Black People and White People come together like when I was in the same ditch watching each other's back this world be a lot better. If the United States doesn't get better it going to be a dictators world.

That war, like all of them, was a tragedy. The US lost! A waste of life is right.

Back in 1967 I was a young lady protesting the Vietnam War while saying goodbye to 4 very dear friends who had been drafted to go and fight. One was MIA (missing in action) and we kept our hopes for a few years. One came home without one of his legs and the other brother came home addicted to morphine/ heroine. But they all came home totally fucked up mentally. Nightmares and flashbacks but there wasn't any kind of help. Hell.. nobody gave a 'welcome home heroes ' parade. I'm still waiting for a valid reason why we went to Vietnam in the first place. Because in my mind, it wasn't worth it, how can anyone justify the damage done to the families?
Thank you for the music! ❤❤❤

There was no purpose to the war. Like the war in Korea it wss just to stop the spread of communism. People were so scared of it they didnt think about the actions they would cause. They just did it. Hence why we had Korea, Vietnam, and many others. They were all pointless and the only reason they happened is fear of communism

Was 18 when I got ' in country '. Grew up too fast. Luckily I came home and was 19. I no longer had anything in common with my friends. You don't understand how changes happen. Joy is a memory like a fairy tale.

I was 16 and trying to be a teenager while the people I loved and cherished were being wounded or killed or mentally ruined forever... it's hard not to sob when I look back and yet I feel fantastic pride seeing those young faces and knowing they were my friends, cousins, brother, Uncle, schoolmates. Thank you for sharing.
