W.A.Mozart Horn Concerto No.2 n E flat major K 417 1. Allegro maestoso 2. Andante 3. Rondo Dennis Brain, French Horn Philharmonia Orchestra Herbert von Karajan Rec.1954
My introductions to music were Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, and Verdi. in that order. They were simply "greats;" all pretty much equal to my juvenile ear. However, the only Mozart I really recognized were the Horn Concertos. The Brain/von Karajan recording contained all four; for me and to this day, they are one work. When I was forty, I was in a taxi on 8th Avenue near the Port Authority. The taxi driver's radio was tuned to WQXR. The musicologist of the afternoon said, "When in doubt, play Mozart." Low these forty years later, I am still discovering Mozart. Two days ago Sarah Willis posted a trio performance of the Rondo from the 4th. I commend it to you. In any case, today I am revisiting my youth. Incidentally, I still have this performance on vinyl 33 and 1/3.
Right, no one since has played as brilliantly. Brain had a remarkable gift. Hermann Baumann and Timothy Brown are superb musicians. But Dennis Brain was and remains the ideal. He must have spent some time in Mozart's head to play these concerti with such melodic and dynamic control.
Listeners might be interested to know about Dennis Brain's last appearance at the Aldeburgh Festival on June 15th, 1957. He appeared with his brother, Leonard(playing the cor anglais) and the Dennis Brain Chamber Orchestra, and performed a wide variety of works, including Haydn's Concerto no.I in D(where he was the soloist), Mozart's Symphony K.319, Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks Concerto, and Malcolm Arnold's Sinfonietta, op.48. What a terrible, tragic, loss.
The record shown at the start of this video with the Philharmonia orchestra (1953?) was continuously available on LP, cassette and then CD, for nearly fifty years.
Best horn player ever, in the humble opinion of a decidedly inferior player (me). I know, I know--my avatar is a trumpet. I play that too. I was a trumpet major in college!!
So beautiful; that tone color👌
