    With the Lunar New Year just days away, holiday activities and celebrations are getting underway in cities across China. People reuniting with families and friends will make about 3 billion trips by road, air and rail during what is also known as the Spring Festival in China. The highlight of the festivities will be the start of the Year of the Rat on Saturday, January 25, 2020.

      Hi! I'm learning Chinese in the university (1st year) and on February 1st we will do a programme about Chinese New Year. I tried to look for information on the internet but it's either very basic or fully in Chinese.ಥ‿ಥ
      Can you please give us some tips or recommendations on what we can do?

      Wear red, eat dumplings, eat fish, eat chicken, GET TOGETHER WITH FAMILY (VERY IMPORTANT).
      The fish, chicken, and dumplings are all eaten at one big family meal called Nian Ye Fan (New Years Evening Meal).
      You might also put door stickers on the side of the door, and also stick a fu sticker upside down on the door.
      Hanging red lanterns around is also a thing.
      These are the basics, at least.

    I married a Chinese women, so I know the story of Chinese new year, I used to tell the story to our daughter;
    An evil dragoon "Ni~yen" on the darkest night of the year when the moon was absent from the sky, would sneak into villages at night and cause chaos for the people. People would fear this dragon till a wise man came along and told them how to ward off this evil dragon. Making loud noise, wearing red & fire. When the evil dragon showed up this time the villagers banged on drums, wore the color read from head to toe and lit fire crackers and fire lanterns which scared off this evil dragon.

    Correction: This is Chinese New Year. The Chinese lunar calendar originated from China, including the famous lion and dragon dances. Please do not misappropriate Chinese culture. China is an ancient civilization with vast and great influences in many countries. Vietnam, Japan and South Korea (once a tributary state of China's) and many other Asian countries had adopted the Chinese New Year celebrations.

    there’s been a move to call this day Lunar New Year (though in the spirit of scientific accuracy, it should be called Lunisolar New Year as the Chinese calendar months are based on the Moon’s cycles but the years are based on the Sun’s cycles).
    But even that has its own issues.
    You see, there are other lunar calendars in the world that start the year on a different day to the Chinese calendar. The Islamic New Year, the Burmese New year and many many other new years are also technically lunar new years.
    请你们注意一下不是lunar因为中国日历是lunisolar。
