Im glad you covered composing for film/TV etc.. Its a pretty huge market people don't really think of until they fall into it. I got into recording because of the bands I was apart of in my early teens.. which then lead me to my 20 plus career in TV post sound (Music being only a tiny part of what my career is now) Music now is my hobby.

That’s awesome, I’m currently a recording engineer..I mainly work with hip hop and pop artist. how did you switch over to doing film/tv? And what do you do specifically in the post sound?

I went to school for television and radio.. which covered some audio, but by this time I had a basement studio and would record my own band and friends bands..
Then got a student position in 2001.. I never left.
I mainly mix promos, radio spots and record voice over. But I'll also work on larger things that range from 5 to 45 minutes.. basically documentary types of things. Stereo and 5.- we do some Atmos (and have lent out our Atmos room to some producers who were up mixing some classic songs I'm not allowed to mention..)

    Another great video! Thanks!
I was a pro musician back in the 90's. I screwed things up but never stopped creating music. Now I'm 59, and even though I'm better at what I've always done than I've ever been before, I'm struggling to find a place for my many years of music and experience. This video has me thinking again!

good kibble to chew on...I always hated the saying, 'those who can't do, teach' meaning that if you aren't good enough or connected enough to go pro, you can always just get a crappy teaching job. Not sure where that originated from, but it's insulting.
I don't know anyone who ever excelled at anything without having someone else show them the ropes first. I recently decided to pick up the bass to add to my repetoire of instruments and thanks to several youtuber's tutorials, I've surpassed what I thought I was capable of in a short period of time.
Roger Love - vocal coach...aka teacher - I probably learned as much if not more from his courses as i did with private instruction for 4 semesters in college

Hey. I saw your video from about 2 months ago called '5 Most common compression mistakes'. You were talking about choosing suitable compressors in context no matter the specific type of instrument or genre. That's all well and fine. But then I also noticed you taking subtle jabs at engineer Warren Huart, as if to suggest that he lacks the concept of context in regards to compressors and effects. If you actually watched some of his videos you'll find that all he ever talks about the majority of the time is in fact 'context'. The only difference between you and him in regards to the topic of context is that he is clever enough to realise that the majority of people who watch tutorial videos on the lousy internet, whether they are his viewers, your viewers, or otherwise, are usually people who are in the beginner to intermediate stages of mixing, as oppose to the ones who are on the more advanced side of the spectrum who are usually more likely to turn to their more experienced colleagues in the studios that they work in as a means for progression and learning. The more beginner to intermediate people are less likely to have x amount of money to throw at whatever compressor and effect that they wish to buy. This is why he recommends certain compressors for certain instruments as many people aren't planning on purchasing that many of them anyways. And thus they will not have many to choose from when mixing. They might not even be able to grasp their heads around the idea of selecting a specific compressor for a specific purpose regardless of the type of instrument. These ideas will begin to develop and become more vivid later on. So his suggestions are a good way for viewers to get excited about the little that they might be able to purchase as they may not have the finances to own a huge variation. In fact a lot of the time he just says that even stock plugins alone can the job done without any issues for his viewers to feel encouraged and optimistic. Why is this? Because the more advanced among them aren't really going to be watching videos on the internet anyways. Makes no difference whether they are his videos or your videos. And so the ones that actually do go online will be able to connect to the content better. And you wonder why he has the the best part of a million subscribers. But to illustrate his capability of giving context based advice, here is the following at 5:46 - th-cam.com/video/NE1Ov-ObLv0/w-d-xo.html at 5:46. To be honest maybe you should focus on fixing your own kind first before going in on the British. Here is an example of 'your own kind' that is suppose to be representing a German DAW software company, th-cam.com/video/WfHmUZZ0QeY/w-d-xo.html . Not to mention, your leader is someone who is incapable of tying his own shoes, th-cam.com/video/YHHcJqqX77w/w-d-xo.html . And this is coming from someone who is neither English or American as I am from Australia. Warren Huart is someone I admire, not only because of his great talent, but also because he is one of the hardest working and busiest people inside of audio production. Let's just say you're not going to find him with enough free time to be chilling in a podcast every weekend. Plus he was also in their with the best of them working with some of the top artists well before he ever released any content online.

Thanks for the very thorough comment!
I don’t think I’m taking jabs at Warren specifically, because I don’t think I’ve ever heard him talk about compression at length.
…not because he doesn’t talk about it (.I’m sure he does). But just because I don’t really watch his channel! :-)
I mean, what I’ve seen of it has generally been pretty good! But I just don’t watch a lot of audio engineering videos on TH-cam. Too busy making them and doing other stuff as well!
If I do watch TH-cam it’s usually about one of my non-audio hobbies, that aren’t my job, like jiu jitsu or archery. (Maybe you can relate!)
In any event, if someone has very few compressors to work with, it’s probably even more important that they take a conceptual approach to understanding and using compression.
As for Warren’s channel size, congrats to him!
He started making videos right about the time I *stopped* making videos, in 2015. He kept on making them during the absolute BEST time to build a TH-cam channel (from about 2015 through 2018 or so), has made a tremendous number of videos, and has had tremendous success!
He’s easily put in 10x the time and effort I have into his channel and has had 10x the results. That’s wonderful for him!
I’m not trying to have the biggest music production channel on TH-cam. If I was, there are a LOT of things I’d be doing very, very differently! We both know that.
I’m not sure where you’re going with the whole “British vs American” thing, or why you’re bringing up random other channels and politicians that have nothing to do with me, but I’ll be a good sport and just pretend I didn’t see that part! 😂
Anyway, hope you’re well, thanks for the comment and glad you’ve found some channels you really like and that resonate with you.
      Very best,
      Justin

Blah blah blah. The minutes tick by until we can finally "get into it". And then of course there is the obligatory self promotion throughout the entire video, plus obligatory begging at the end of the video. Thank you for this waste of time.
