As weird as this car was … it’s still one of the most “ out there “ cars that gm made and I really thank them for even cramming a LS in it.

They should’ve made it real wheel drive. They would’ve hit a Homerun and it would’ve been far more popular and way more collectible today. Putting that much power in a front wheel drive is just absolutely stupid.

And it is a 5.3L V8 too, but I do like these along with the Monte Carlo SS and Grand Prix

but would you be able to buy as cheap as you can today? you can pick one of these up for sub 3k if it ended up being a staple like the g8 then you would’ve payed way more.

The W body platform has always been FWD.

Her in Canada with 5 months of winter the front wheel drive was Awesome! When everyone was parking the Camaros corvettes and mustangs I was still rolling 💪💪😊

I get alot of compliments on my 2009 SS, looks better in black. People tell me they miss their Impala of this style, say they wish they did not sell or trade it in.

The 0-60 is actually kind of important. Low 5 seconds was on par with some of the hottest sports cars from just a decade before. Example Camaro SS. This car was all about its engine and the handling and brakes were a big upgrade on the base models. You are right to say it was a Lumina at its core, but a Lumina with a V8 package is still something a bit special, even in 2006

We happen to repair vehicles and 190,000 miles is a testament to the car itself. The eighth gen Impala seems to be more plentiful on the roads here these days than the Toyota , Nissan and Honda counterparts . Yes the Impalas had issues but most cars do. In fact we just got in a totaled 2010 with 160 k in. From a collision stand point they are built a lot sturdier as well. .

I'm just needing an engine rebuild on my 9th gen 2008 SS Impala. I got it with 63k miles, it now has 183k miles, I've had the transmission replaced 2x in 10yrs.

Still holding on to my 2011. Last model year with the 3.5. 203K miles clocked. Have no plans to part with the car as these sedans are rather unique for being normal traffic.
Love the SS versions however, want a second ninth gen for this reason someday.

If you can't find a good SS go with a 2012 to 2016 LTZ or LTZ Limited. Six speed transmission, 305 HP V6, Haul Azz.

The 3.6L LFX was the best of the three 3.6L engines GM made. The others were the 3.6L LY7 (TIMING CHAINS) and 3.6L LLT (Wasn't as terrible as LY7).

I do have a 2012 LTZ with the 300 horse 3.6 VVTI And that sucker is three times the Impala I had before. 2000 3.4 base Impala. I actually raced dude with Monte SS 5.3 and smoked him.

i had a 3.9 2006, was so disappointed with the handling. the mods i made it drive like unbalanced roller skate. only thing that car did good was mpg, rolling the VT and NH mountains i averaged over 30 mpg. trans started slipping in 2010 gave it to my mom, drove for a few more years ended up rusting till inspection what not possible with out buying one.

Nice review, but you are missing the point on this car. Yes it’s a W body, but it has an LS4 in it! It handles heads and tails above an Impala LS, not to mention the old B-body that everyone thinks is tops. The transmission issues are easily solved with a transmission cooler and a couple of pints of Lucas transmission fix. Also, use it as it was intended. A great highway car with awesome power and great highway fuel economy. It’s not a race car. The sideways mounted drivetrain gets too hot for extended performance runs. Parts are cheap and readily available. All part of the fun. The Bonneville review you did applies to this car too IMO.
