    I watched this like ten times and then sprayed the edges of my copy of Strange the Dreamer. So worth it.

    This video helped A LOT. I really want "gold" edges on my plated prisoner series, I just didn't know what type of gold paint I should use. The paint that you used is exactly the look I am going for. Super helpful! Thank you!

      Yes! I almost panicked before I sprayed, but afterwards, I was mad at myself for worrying because it was SO EASY

      The Novel Lush yeah I ended up doing like 6 yesterday! It's hard not to do all of the ones with gold lettering. I did try black and orange on some paperbacks. I did fuck up some spots but overall they turned out pretty good!

    Ooh this vid is wonderful. I got a special edition of a book that supposed to have gold edges but it was actually just a mustard yellow. I gotta do it myself 🥲

    Yep, there are gents here. Been trying to find out how to do this for ages. You've been the first to give me the info on an easy to understand and replicate gold leaf effect. Thank you so much.

    I know this was r years ago, but I'd just like to leave a little tip for when you can't spray paint outside because of the weather or something, and you can't wait for the weather to get better because of no patience 😅 I always use one of those boxes you fold together to pack in when you're moving (moving boxes? 🤨😅)!
    Anyways! If you spray inside of one of those you're probably good!

    I love this! One of my favorite things about books is when they have colored edges, but the thought never occurred to me that I could do it myself. And I never thought it would be so easy.

    Just by watching this I'm going to spray my edges of both Nevernight and Godsgrave. When book three comes out, that's getting sprayed too.

    I did a search on how to make goldleaf pages and your video turned up. I was shocked when I saw the book you used as I just read that book a couple of months ago. Can't wait to try your method. Thanks.

    Oh my god.... my first thought went to Strange the Dreamer. I ordered the UK edition but didn’t get the one with sprayed edges. I’m very tempted but I’m scared I’ll mess up. 😬

      OMG! Me too. It was so freaking annoying to wait for weeks and then discover it was normal looking. The cover is still so cool though.
      I spray painted milk crates for my book shelves and my tower PC so I totally get that fear but Aggh. I need those blue edges!
      There are a lot of tutorials for this kind of thing online so you can look at them too. The biggest thing is to be far enough away to basically just dust it and to WEIGH THE BOOK DOWN enough so the paint doesn't seep into the pages.
      I basically want to do this to all my favorite hard backs that I never plan to sell.

    • @TheNovelLush
      @TheNovelLush  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't be worried, it was so easy! Just make sure you use a good bit of paper and tape. Tape up all the gaps between the paper and use heavy books/weights to hold the one you're painting tightly shut so no paint has room to go between the pages anywhere.

  • @hemlockandoak
    @hemlockandoak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey, it works nicely but the spraypaint does tend to come off when you flip through it (like it transfers to my fingers). Just a heads up for anyone trying, haha.

    • @conceptionproductions4649
      @conceptionproductions4649 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That literally was my question lol... did you use the same exact spray paint?

    • @hemlockandoak
      @hemlockandoak 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@conceptionproductions4649 Hey, yes, I did use the same spraypaint. I started using a varnish overtop though once it dried(kryolan) and it does seem to help. Pages didn't stick together either. It's an annoying extra step but it did solve the problem for me.
      Also, it doesn't seem like it happens for *all* papers, one of my tests was okay and it used different paper. But it's just something to keep in mind. :) Good luck.

      @@hemlockandoak is kryolan makeup setting spray? Cause that what I found trying to find it on Amazon. Edit: nvm I found it is spelled krylon. Which version of the spray did you use tho? Matte? Clear?

    All I can think about is bibles. Really nice bibles always have gold sprayed edges. I've been wanting to do this to my books for a while. I've seen people do geometric patterns and draw pictures too! They look so cool but i'm not that good. I'd rather stick to one color and keep it simple but I also worry about how the books will smell since I have a sensitive nose.
    I got Six of Crows (the black edged edition, which surprised me) from the library and reading the book made me ill. Either the book smelled weird (from being in the library, maybe) or the paint they used on the edges was too strong. Either way, I had to power my way through it. That's the only part that worries me.

    • @TheNovelLush
      @TheNovelLush  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure about paint smell. I have asthma and I'm fairly sensitive. It did smell but I didn't notice a scent after it dried. If you're more sensitive, I'd be cautious. Have you held a copy in a bookstore to see if it was the paint and not something weird that might have been in the library?

    • @TheDemonCurupira
      @TheDemonCurupira 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. That is a really good idea, it never even occurred to me because I read the book at home. I suppose it's possible they used something on the book, maybe to clean it or something. Though I should say that I literally sniffed the pages to be sure and it was coming from them. Just really weird. I'll have to see.

    • @TheNovelLush
      @TheNovelLush  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Or somebody who borrowed it could have had it in a house with weird stuff too maybe

    • @TheNovelLush
      @TheNovelLush  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was petrified! All the paper helped lol. Just make sure everything is covered and you put a loooooot of weight on the book so there's no room for paint to get between the pages

    I want to try it with paperbacks - that's more nervewracking for me because I feel like painters tape wouldn't work, because it would ruin the paperback when tearing off, so I thought masking tape, but then I'm like could that be non-waterproof so that paint goes through the tape.
    Like I've been looking at methods and acrylic paints seem like the method with the easiest access to the supplies - but I'd be paranoid about leakage inside the book, especially when you have to do a couple of layers. But Sprayed paints seem the better option for the better result because less is more as they said.

    • @Brynwyn123
      @Brynwyn123 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...why wouldn't masking tape be paint resistant? That's literally what it's used for
