  • Flamenco is an art form that connects the musician with the dancer in an exchange of steps and chords. In this talk, be entranced by the musical stylings of flamenco musician Kristofer Hill and flamenco dancer Julia Chacon and learn how the cultural dance combines singing, dancing, guitar playing, hand-clapping, and finger-snapping to create its distinct musical style -- and to communicate a hidden language.
A graduate of Arizona State University, Kris had the opportunity to study with renowned composer Daniel Lentz and performing artist Richard Lehrman. He developed his skills accompanying ballet & modern classes on piano, guitar, & percussion and composing for modern dance performances at ASU for 10 years. Some of his compositions for dance have been performed at the Joyce, Soho, NYU, Wave Dance Fest. NYC, Arizona Museum for Youth, and Virginia Piper Theater. Performance credits also include Reagan Center; Museo del Barrio, NYC; the Olympia Dome, WA; and Woodstock as well as many international venues. He studied flamenco guitar in Sevilla, Spain and performed in many venues throughout Sevilla with José Galvans Cuadro.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This is a complex art form & dance. We are so fortunate to see this in North America.

Thanks for all the comments here. I'm not a flamenco singer and wish I had one for this demonstration. But sometimes, you have to work with what you got when there is $0 budget. This presentation was more about informing people about the inner workings of flamenco communication, than it was to demonstrate my singing ability. Haha...I hope you enjoy the video and I hope it inspires you to dig a little deeper into the many factors that create and created Flamenco. Un abrazo!

We Andalusian people love to be culturally appropriated! No kidding, I appreciate very much that a foreigner such as Kristofer can teach the world a thing or two about flamenco, fantastic!

In Flamenco older dancers are the most appreciated. They are like good wine, the older the better, They dance till they drop. Their experience and their "duende" has more value.

I'm a former student of yours from many years ago. You don't know it, but you've been a substantial inspiration and influence to me and my music, and you are by far the greatest teacher I've ever had the pleasure of being taught by. I'm glad to see you're making a name for yourself, and I truly hope all is well for you, Kris. Keep on doing what you love, and I wish you the best. Greetings from the East Coast -
    - an old Metro Arts student and friend.

Singing and playing at the same time is really unconventional in flamenco. The reason is because your voice gets du*ked up if you are slouched up while playing guitar

Rod Balingit both! The I or iii chord is Major. The Andalucian Cadence in the Key of A Phyrgian would be Dminor /CMajor /BbMajor /AMajor
      or D-/C7/Bb7/AMajor
