With help from tech support (thanks Cliff!) I purchased just the power plugs/adapter and used it for a dash cam I already had. My camera uses 12 volts so I snipped the USB adapter PCB and connected my camera's power wires directly to the power plugs/adapter thingie carefully observing correct polarity. The video made the install look simple and it was. My dash cam install looks clean and is barely noticeable. Thanks Trail Grid Pro!
Question do we really need to removed the over head console ? I am going to install this soon? But base on your video I did not get the whole purpose of why taking it off I have a sr5 premium. Please help guide me
Ordered the Garmin Mini2 bundle from you guys on Monday and just installed it. All of 10mins max on my ‘23 SR5P. Also no need to remove the upper console panel for me. I tucked the dongle into the headliner and used some double sided gorilla tape to hold the USB portion to the black plastic cap. Great video and instructions. Looking to buy more from you guys.
@@vacaville122 just popped off the black plastic trim surrounding the power wire for rear view mirror. No need to remove the panel. It doesn’t provide any extra access.
I just got one of these kits. I haven't installed it but it's so worth the money. Adapter and 2 different cables. I'm tired of my Cable hanging from my windshield to the cigarette lighter

I used double sided tape to stick it to the that panel instead of using zip ties. It's been stuck on there for almost a year. Great install video, it is fairly easy to install.
Works great, however I am confused why you guys don't just stuff the adapter into the ceiling and put the plastic shroud back on. Mine looks stock with a single cable coming out of the ceiling into the dashcam.
Once again, well done sir! Do you happen to know if this connection point would power a dash cam that has a “parking” mode - where it starts recording upon motion sense. Thank you for taking the time to put this tutorial together!
@@TrailGridPro I'm really curious what gives here, in the video and in your reply to this comment you're saying this adapter provides always-on power, and will enable 24/7 parking mode. However, I just came back inside from doing this install in my '21 SR5 Premium, 10-pin adapter, and guess what? Power is ACC only, like I figured it was, since the auto-dim mirror light isn't on until you've "keyed on" (accessory mode, for keyless models). I went ahead and paid to look at Toyota's wiring diagrams, figuring this wasn't a difference across trim levels, and I'm right - this auto-dim rearview that we're tapping into with this adapter has always been ACC on/Engine on, just like the cigarette lighters in the vehicle. Very disappointed to have purchased this and done this job based on your video and comments only to find I indeed do not have parking mode. Does your Cobra have a battery that gets charged when power is supplied to the camera, and maybe that's why you have parking mode? Not the case for my Garmin.
Stumbled across this video while looking for something for my BMW 5 series. This type of mirror adapter is exactly what im looking for, does anyone know if anyone makes a similar adapter for BMWs?
This depends on the trim level of your 4Runner. Some trim levels have the plug accessible just behind the mirror, but others require the overhead console to come down in order to access the necessary factory plugs!
Can you please post a close up photo of the exact location where you adhered the camera. I like that location but you didn't really show the exact location. Thanks!
One thing is I like how my current dash cam has a camera facing towards me in case I get accused of not wearing my seatbelt or something I can prove I was doing the right thing. Is it possible to get just the wiring harness but not the camera?
When the dash cam powers up, does it start recording automatically to the SD card or do you have to press a Record button to begin recording? I would prefer to not use the app.
What if i dont remove the overhead console would it still gonna work? The only purpose of that is to hide the wires right? Ima just take off the cover for the connector then connect the dongar and just zip tie it. I dont mind if it looks messy lol
Yep, it should. Just count the pins from the harness powering your mirror and order here: trailgridpro.com/products/dash-cam-power-adapter-03-22-4runner/
Hello, just watched the video on TH-cam. It was stated that this is for all 4runners from ...I think 2003 to 21. However the web site says with auto dimming mirror or lcd back up camera. I have a 2011 base SR5 with neither. So this is not compatible with mine?
Great question! Our kit does require an auto-dimming mirror or a mirror with an LCD rearview display in the mirror. That’s where the dash cam gets power from.
I’m sorry if this is a stupid question but…. Can I just do this without taking apart the top part? Can I just take off the skinny plastic part that go to the mirror so I can just plug in the adapter?
Note: if you have 2017 TRD PRO the harness is different than the one shown in this video. The plug is also directly into the lower back of the mirror where you will attach their harness.
Looks like I'm a bit late to the party. But great video. Buying the adapter now, but I'm curious what that CB rail and phone mount are! I've been looking at various ways to do mine and am considering to go with a quad lock setup, but I really like my Otterbox cases.
Very helpful..I have already ordered Cobra SC 400D and am going to install it on my 2020 Toyota 4Runner Limited. Can I buy the cable connection from you? Thanks
Why can't you just hide the usb adapter under the overhead console? Having the usb cord coming down straight to the dash cam would look cleaner. I've seen a few install videos and everyone just zip ties it...
I've been looking for a camera solution for my 2008 4x4 Urban Runner. This just might be it! I would like to see the rear camera option/addition as well though! Before making my decision.
I bought the product and installed my dashcam however it does not provide continuous power supply to the dashcam. So I am not able to turn on the parking surveillance. The video or at least the title is a little misguided
You’re exactly right! The product provides power while the vehicle is on. To get constant power you can connect to a constant power wire source or the battery.
This does not work on 4Runners with the 14 pin connector. My SR5 has auto dimming mirror and LCD screen but it is a 14 pin connector. Take apart your connector and count the pins before ordering.

Would this adapter provide constant power when ignition is not on, In order to use the parking mode feature of dash cams?
It does not - just when powered on.

This video was strictly educational for the connections - you can definitely tuck the wiring away!

Yep, correct! I also found it easier to complete the process without the console in the way.
