Playing in open pastures of lupine in the foothills of the Sierras brings back childhood memories. The grazing animals know not to eat them ( my grandfather warned us that they are poisonous) so there were always plenty of bouquets to gather and garlands to weave to while away the summers. Very few wildflowers have the fragrance like wild lupine. It stays in your memories. Happier times to recall in your old age. 👵

I visited Lassen Park and hiked the peak numerous times in my 37 years living in Shasta County, it never got old, I did. I counted several "control burns" on a hike one day and the next day some had got out of hand and now there was fire everywhere. Still a beautiful place.

Fuckit. I've only watched 10 seconds and I was compelled to stop and comment on what a bloody astoundingly great opening shot you got there Tony. Honest. I was feeling more than jaded today, to say the least, and then... the creek, that meadow, those trees, the mountain behind. My heart surged unexpectedly with unaccustomed joy and warmth. Thanks for that you old bugger.

Love the life up above treeline, particularly in CA. Hope you'll get into some fire-ecology botany one of these days. Yeah, lots are human caused, and quite frankly we could use more of 'em but in a more controlled way that what CA was just experiencing, and yet there are few things as lovely as a hike through a forest after a fire, or even during a fire, buy that's just me being a former wild lands fire-fighter, and a native Chicagoan and natural born pyromaniac. Fortunately I got it out of my system. Cheers.

Ok Tony,I found answer to my question to you of "How do the hummers survive in the Andes?" The NYT article today said a study showed those birds every night go into a toper where their body temps fall by as much as 50f..and in the morning to warm, they start the day perched on a branch shivering, and that brings their body temp to as warm as when they are hovering and feeding.
    I knew..they couldn't be normal hummers to live like that!..one for me!..sorta-lol.

We have smoke filling the valley here from the Castle fire in the Golden trout wilderness, which as of a short time ago has achieved 37,728 acres. I wonder what flora has been effected?

Just saw _Micranthes tolmiei_ a few days ago, at the 5,000 foot level of Mount Baker. Plus lots of ripe _Vaccinium deliciosum_ (yes, that’s the real name, and it’s appropriate) at about 4,500 feet.

Geeze, I need to learn my plant families again, a lot has been rearranged in the last few years. Since when is Castilleja not in Scrophulariaceae? Since when is Orobanchaceae a family? These phylogenetics guys are gonna be the death of me.

I recall a previous professor had mentioned that the blushing corolla of eriogonum occurs following fertilization.. but you conclude it’s a matter of maturity.. interesting!
That’s make sense, where It looked as if the blushing is consistent 🙃🤔 not sure how we could figure it anyway
