It is caused by the blob of grease underneath the switch toggle. On very hot days under the heat generated by the windscreen the grease melts and runs down onto the switch contacts. This is likely to re-occur every summer - remove most of the grease under the toggle switch and the problem may never reoccur.
My 2016 Jetta cruise goes out with ERR on the dash after about 20 minutes driving. It seems to happen when going uphill. I have to restart the car to reset it. Note; I have a check engine light and sputtering engine at idle if the car has not been run for several hours. Any ideas? Last year it happened but went away after using fuel injector cleaner. No such luck this time.
Just tried it on my 2012 Jetta SE 2.5 that has the same type of cruise control switch and it didn't work.... 😔 It was worth a shot as it was pretty easy to do, but my problem is somewhere else. Any thoughts?
Worked great and five minute repair. Dealer wants $100 just to look at the car.
You help me in a different way, but you help. Thanks!
Nice video and i was gonna try the same but my switch turns off and on but cruise control wont engage so it must be something else for me.
Thank you, same problem with my 2020 AMAROK at 20 km
Thanks it was the same issue on my mk5 rabbit manual
Did you try this method? Did it work?

I just did this on my mk3 Leon Cupra. You’re right about the grease. I removed it all. The switch still moves. Fingers crossed it works 🤞🏼
