This time we're looking at some TH-cam reviewer first-world problems... I can't keep up with all these swords. Believe it or not, there is indeed such a thing as too many swords. Testing and reviewing them takes a while, and winter has been throwing a snowy, frosty monkey wrench into my progress.
So the least I can do right now is show you what I've got and talk a bit about the stuff. It's mainly Chinese reproduction swords, which is nice for a change. I'm always interesting in trying out something new and getting a feel for arms and armor from different eras and parts of the world.
These are mostly from the Han Dynasty, so throughout the same time period as the Roman Empire during its rise and peak.

This is because TH-cam doesn't recommend his videos to people due to them dealing with weapons. Therefor, he doesn't get a lot of casual views. That's why he's been trying to get more sponsors for his vids as of late.

During the Han Dynasty, soldiers were lightly armored. Their necks, arms, legs were exposed. So the Han Dao, which was a secondary weapon, weren't made hefty. They were design to be quick action swords but durable and easy to mass produce. The jians had similar concept in mind which favoured reach, speed and good balance between cutting and stabbing.
Things changed with the developments of armors and smithing techniques. Foot soldiers could be equipped with mail shirt. Calvary could be fully armored. Jian, by that time, started to fall out of favour as battle field weapon while the heavy and sturdy Dao flourished. Jians of the Ming and later dynasty started to establish themselves as a status symbols and ritual decorations and tools. Specifically those with highly decorated handle like that one you have. I believe that is a Jian to guard a household from evil spirit not a weapon. It main purpose is to sit on the altar to the ancestors with all the burning incenses.

    • @kkcheungus1
      @kkcheungus1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Best explanation ! In Han Dynasty, the existential threat is from the Xiongnu, skill horseman from the Northern Steppes and they did not have heavy armor. The Infantry Han Dao is also a bit compact because the Infantry fight in formation, with shield in one hand, similar to the Romans. A more compact weapon will fit the style of fighting on foot at that time. Cavalry Han Dao, is another matter, and that was much longer as you can see from the 1:1 replica of Cavalry Han Dao. lkchensword.com/heavenly-horse

btw Skallagrim, the "Royal Infantry Han Dao" in this video, it was not a battlefield weapon, it was more like a tool sword for soldiers to cary along side of their primary weapon (spear, halbert...), and it was mostly used to cut off heads from dead enemy bodies for after battle "headcount"... and that's why it's so light.

20:52 it's more focused on armour penetration, because at Han dynasty, it's Ancient times, people don't really have lots of armour, Han Jian can cut flesh, but at Ming dynasty, it's renaissance time, swords are actually mostly abandoned, at that time sword is just a decorative weapon, or secondary weapon, at that era, different weapons are used, heavy Dao(the Chinese word for "knife/single edged sword/machete")+Shield are used for infantry who holds the line, there are also infantry with no shields, using guns and canons and maybe rockets for defending large cities with walls, for cavalry it's even less Jian, they use super long super heavy lance Shuo "槊" and three-barreled matchlock gun (similar to pepper pistol), their enemies are northern barbarians with full body metal armour, so no point making a light slashing sword when you can't even stab through the armour.

You can contact museums in china or japan, they usually have people on hand or can get you in contact with someone who knows about historical arms and weaponry, pretty much any museum can assist you in that venture.
Other than that, you can find sword schools that specializes in chinese sword play. You probably know these already, but they are the only options I can think of

That last sword you said was heavy maybe because it lacks the double fuller that I've seen on other models of that type of sword. I think most of them were deeply fullered, so that might explain the unusual heft of it. Or possibly it is modelled after a specific find that was intentionally heavy for a purpose. But I have seen that sword type before, and they usually have very deep double fuller cross sections, which would lighten them up a lot.

One way to solve this problem is by not buying so many swords at once. That's just my take. The first impressions compilation, because that's what this is, is a good idea. It shows what people can expect to see fully reviewed in future and it gets them excited. Some TH-camrs who do reviews for certain products do that. An unboxing, a quick look, and then a full review after wards - each being their own separate videos.. I'm positive you can figure something out.

You're curious why all of these gen are so light? You have to remember when these swords were most used and plentiful one could walk a battlefield for 2 days without finding green grass for all the spillage of blood. Because life was cheap and peasants were plentiful. We're talking about so many people available during the time of the one tiger it was said they could have the barding done for your elephant within 3 days as the workhouse would put one man on every two tiles. When they gathered for war it would take a man to days just to circle the gathered men if they were all standing prepared for battle in their pike blocks. If I remember right in a small battle a single magistrate had brought 26 chariot 1 Chariot for every pike block he had available. And he was asked if he had split up his forces or if he actually only controlled an area so small. His response was the horses were needed for the Cory but more men will be showing up by Nightfall. Yeah that little sword that you hold in your hand with the ring on the back if I understand correctly was originally handed out to the common farmer even a soldier would have a larger heavier blade. The idea of being let no man on the battlefield fight above his station. So it would be carving knives for the peasants that is a short sword Dow. And after you join the Army along with armor when would receive a larger Dow in five different stations as I understand it. And as I understand it not even a general with Carrie you played more than two-and-a-half Troy pounds and no they did not use troy I know that that's just the weight I recognize.

I once spent a weeks holiday in a lovely cottage in Devon, UK. From arriving onwards, I kept ending most sentences with "Do ya na wot I mean?" said very quickly. I have no idea where it came from, I hated saying it, it really got on my wife's nerves; but I just could not stop it. Weirdly, it stopped just as quickly the day we got home.
So I certainly do know what you mean. CRAZY. 😊

八面汉剑‘8 surfaces Han Jian’;Forget about the length, that's for some etiquette reasons, in Han dynasty these are not main battle weapon but for some decoration. When foot soldiers need this they use a shield or GouXiang(knuckle shield with long hooks up and down) to control and destroy pole arms(I'm referring the Han Dao).

Regarding that infantry Han Dao, you have to understand that Han Dynasty was in approximately the same time period as the Roman Empire, i.e. 1000 - 1500 years earlier than your other swords & katanas. So you better compare it with a Roman gladius, which is also short & light.

You should do a rapid fire testing and review of the Chinese swords, kinda like how you did with this first impressions video, most of them are very similar after all. As for how to test them? I wouldn't say to test them on logs like you do your more substantial swords, but maybe quasi replicate some battlefield scenarios with them hitting a shield like substrate and blocking and deflecting against other swords.
