Painting a Smoker's / Hoarder's House

- How to clean and paint a smoker’s house with thick smoke, tar and nicotine on all of the walls. I started by cleaning the walls with TSP cleaner then sanded with 120 grit sandpaper using my Wen drywall sander. After sanding, I primed the walls and ceiling with cover stain oil base primer and then applied Behr paint plus primer. End product the walls look close to new. This method is the fastest way I have used to paint when everything needs done.

Washed my new apartments walls, previously owned by a smoker, with vinegar/ water solution 40%. Am very happy with the result. It's a bit of work scrubbing walls but definitely worth it.
I love this. I usually go with a light gray color just because it hides more stuff. I also paint the walls a light gray also. Tenants don't care what the colors are. They just want a safe place that's clean and affordable. Keep up the amazing work.

Get you a bugger sprayer! Those little ones are graat dor doors or trim. But if you got bigger sprayer goes alot faster!!
I'm in a similar situation. I'm having the whole house deep cleaned, and then I will prime the walls with the Zinsser Bin shellac primer, and then finally repaint. I'd do the same to the ceilings but they are unfortunately popcorn, and I don't have a sprayer / experience using one, so leaving that to the professionals. In your situation, did this process remove the smell?
Yes. This definitely helped the smell a lot. I was back in the place for a repair recently and you would never know it was smoked in. I couldn't smell anything.
Won’t it still smell if you didn’t clean the ceiling?
Ceiling was painted flat white. Hard to clean flat paint. Cover-stain or Bin primmer will lock in the smell.

It was a process. Eviction, came to an agreement at court for her to leave on a certain date. At the end she told me she was happy it was over.
Is that the Behr Antique White, or Sherwin Antique White tint?
Behr Antique white I use paint plus primmer, eggshell
Did you have to thin out the paint before using it on the machine?
Why did you not tsp the ceiling?
The paint sheen was flat in some rooms, so the tsp / water was absorbing into ceiling.
I forgot to ask What did you do to the ceiling?
I used cover stain oil base primer on all ceilings then painted with Behr antique white. I use the same color on walls and ceiling.
How many rentals you got
This is a common question I get asked. Mostly answer with just a few. I’ve always wanted to match my number of rentals to my age but always a few short. Haha
Can u not use the sprayer for the entire wall??
This type of sprayer isn’t designed to spay the entire wall. I’ve sprayed paneling and wood work before but not the whole wall.

@@handylandlord just bought a house here in Oregon, been going around scrubbin with tsp, walls, cabinets etc...I picture the prior owners just puffin away with absolutely zero care....some people are just absolute asshats
