According to Washington Post, "The fourth goal came under unusual circumstances: an indirect free kick in the penalty area after a dangerous play by a Ghanaian defender. Balogun touched the ball to Pulisic, who left it for Reyna. With a tangle of players before him, Reyna drove a deflected shot into the top of the net in the 39th minute."
Watched the game. The Ghanaian defender was on the ground after sliding to stop the ball in the box, then saw pressure from the US and reacted by corralling it into his legs and effectively sitting on it while in the box. Sitting on a live ball and preventing the other team from being able to play it is an illegal play; I guess the rule book calls it making a "dangerous" play because US would have to kick through the defender to be able to get to the ball (versus standing to control the ball where any upright player could get to it). This type of foul is not considered severe enough for a direct free kick (which is a penalty in the box), so an indirect free kick in the box was awarded
Seems like everyone explained, but to reiterate, the ref made the proper call to offer a free kick, but indirect. It’s dangerous play when the Ghana defender held the ball in his legs and denied the US a chance to play the ball.
Here’s the best answer I think you can give to explain it: A penalty is given when a foul is committed in the box. For example, a defender kicking an attackers ankles. An indirect free kick (what you saw above) is when the defending team breaks the rules inside the box, but it’s not a foul (like how kicking someone’s ankles is). There are several ways to break the rules in your box, actually, the most common one is for the goalkeeper to pick the ball up from a back pass. That is not allowed. However, the rule broken here is you are not allowed to incite “dangerous play”. The Ghana player incited dangerous play by sitting on the ball, meaning the attacker must literally kick him in order to play the ball. It’s not a penalty, but it’s an indirect free kick.

can someone explain what's up with the free kick inside the penalty area?????? First time I've ever seen this, usually if it's inside the restricted area it's a penalty kick not a free kick.....
My possible starting XI for 2026 WC: Balogun Pulisic Reyna Weah Mckennie T. Adams Scally Zimmerman Richards Dest Turner Bench players who could add valuable minutes: B. Aaronson M. Mckenzie R. Pepi J. Sargent A. Robinson Y. Musah M. Tillman I think obviously the biggest questions are our back 4 and mainly left back and center back.. I think Sergino has proven he’s our best defender by far and whether u like it or now Walker is our guy when it comes to center backs.. it’s just who is going to fill the left back position and stick in the middle with walker.. I think Scally will be our guy at LB with the biggest question being at CB I put Richards there but could easily put Mark McKenzie there as well. There is a lot of time from now till the next WC we’ll see how much these young guys progress
good stuff, I like it for the most part - we need Reyna starting at AM and Dest is way better at RB vs LB. When Tyler finally gets healthy, Gregg will have some tough decisions figuring out who to start between Musah, Wes and Adams. Also I think Miles Robinson deserves consideration at CB, I actually would feel most comfortable right now with him and Zimmerman starting. Still a lot of time till 2026 for that to change, though. Ghana were pretty bad but I thought Cardoso and Lund both played very well, I'd like to see them get a further look since we need depth at both their positions.
@@jeremiahm3434 I agree I would deff have Reyna playing more CAM and getting forward more not really worried ab him getting back as much as we have Tyler to hold down the Defensive mid.. as far as Sergino that’s why I have him at RB is bc he’s far better on that side (as with Gio he would obv be more involved with the attack) and would have him playing a RWB position.. once again having Tyler to fill in the holes when Dest makes his run forward.. this team I have put together runs all thru Adams pretty much defensively it’s alot to ask of him but I’m confident he’ll be up for the test. I would have him playing solely as a CDM playing pretty far back not worried about him getting in on the attacking plays but rather more for winning the ball back, applying pressure, filling in the gaps when players make their runs forward and get out of position, and the occasional pass here in there. Weston on the other hand could play a little more offensively minded playing balls over the top. Pushing the pace forward on those quick giveaways, and making runs into the box here and there. As far as Musah goes i like the pressure he puts on the ball and he plays his heart out on the pitch he’s a real work horse but I think he’s actually better when coming off the bench maybe come in for Weston around the 60-70 mark to get him a good 30 mins of work in when his stamina is top form same with aaronson

The meat glazing for USA is unreal
@@amorris525this USA fans have no brain bro you won't get one
Finally. A result that didnt end 2-1 between these teams
Usa the way 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💖
With BULLETTGun, Pulisic, Weah , Reyna , with a proper manager we could beat any team
Also got a balogun, a solid musah playing for the biggest italian club, mckennie is also decent, a fit adams who works hard, tilman plays good now, jedi is a very good lb for a good premier league team
What kind of free kick is that for 4th goal? Never seen anything like it.
This is the first time I've seen Ghana play this bad
What is that sound we they score? It sounds like the rim of a basketball goal when dunked on
Good game.
The USMNT is good
you didn't say same thing after the germany game lol
@@bennyfrimpong1819 It''s what they said last time they humiliated mexico...and the time before that
We're OK.
I feel we are a legitimate top 20 team again after like 10 years in the wilderness. But we still have a long ways to go to be a legitimate top 8 team. I just hope the fans are patient with the journey as long as we continue moving in the right direction.
@@rodgermurphy5721any nation “humiliated” Mexico under tata Martino and coca lol try beating them under jimmy lozano rn. If Mexico played vs the USA tomorrow Mexico would dog walk them easily.
@@TOTO_209 Hell no. It's in L3's DNA to lose to USA. We win by default.
US beating Ghana in football is shameful to say the least...
No Matt Turner save?
Can someone explain the free kick in the penalty box for me please
what a game
🇺🇸 ⚽️
As an Arsenal supporter, I was disappointed Arteta sold Balogun. His performance today on the national team along with his strong start to the French league is only making it worse.
can someone explain what's up with the free kick inside the penalty area?????? First time I've ever seen this, usually if it's inside the restricted area it's a penalty kick not a free kick.....
USA dominated the whole match. Kudos USA. We know Ghana will come back stronger again. Better lack next time black stars of Africa.
How come they didn’t beat Germany they just can with low teams
Goooaaal ❤❤❤
My possible starting XI for 2026 WC:
Balogun
Pulisic Reyna Weah
Mckennie T. Adams
Scally Zimmerman Richards Dest
Turner
Bench players who could add valuable minutes:
B. Aaronson
M. Mckenzie
R. Pepi
J. Sargent
A. Robinson
Y. Musah
M. Tillman
I think obviously the biggest questions are our back 4 and mainly left back and center back..
Great game by the USMNT. Watching the players last night makes you wonder if they came out flat against Germany and had an off night? Don't get me wrong, we are not at that level but played poorly all around especially during a press and defensive requirements....and Mexico beat Germany and we own Mexico soooo...Good game. Still not convinced about Berhalter!
Mexico drew with Germany actually
Even if they beat them its a friendly at the end of day
Lol you do not own Mexico
We were tied with Germany at half time. In the second half Berhalter changed formation to his usual 4-3-3 system. He needs to stop with the Berhalter ball.
@@ZeroFamilon we all learned something during the camp
Where are our good defenders 😢
What do you think of Jhonny's performance?
Hey Greg see what happens when you
Play gio
dest needs to be in the midfield instead of defending
Third goal a goal made in Africa
