      Theoretically, The lines could be shifted.
      So First line fires amunition First supported by second line.
      First line rotates to third line to rest/resupply second line is now First line, and so on

      Ammo supple would be depleted by the time they killed 20% of the romans. So over 80% would jump the marines and they'd be dead. Guns can only last so long.

    • @tullio0
      @tullio0 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      "fireline rotating" .... cutting their firepower down to half. And still doesn't solve the "ammo supply is limited to what the men carry" issue.

    • @TheZachish
      @TheZachish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @LordePereira that is true the but it also did not account for the Romans having to climb over hills of bodies... they just keep coming like they weren't running over an ever increasing mountain of bodies.
      also the Romans were not using any kind of ranged weapons themselves. perhaps the first battles would be something like this but the Romans would learn fast to use Ballistas and other siege weapons on them.

      It's only .45 ACP, which effective due to its size rather than a lot of hot, high-pressure gas. Plus, the military had tested M4s to the point of failure before, and they lasted about that long, firing hundreds of rounds continuously, much more ammunition carried by any soldier, and they'll typically only fail due to the gas tube melting, which the Thompson doesn't have.

      it would have been awesome to see them run out of ammo since the average soldier probably would have carried a maximum of 3-5 magazines of 30 rounds each. Then have to do hand to hand combat briefly before their quick demise.

      I have a few things to point out:
      1. Numbers don't always win. It is true that quantity has a quality all its own but history is full of outnumbered armies winning.
      2. You aren't taking morale into the equation. Sure a human wave of 60k Romans should be able to roll right over 300 stationary Marines with Thompsons and no fortifications but do you really think they would keep climbing over their own dead to get there before saying screw this and running away? Especially when they have never seen or heard anything like this before.
      3. This scenario has the Marines completely surrounded on flat open ground with no cover. These would have to be the dumbest Marines in history to allow that. If 300 Marines found themselves transported back to roman times and needed to wipe out a 60000 man roman army and somehow had the resupply needed to do it, they could do it quite easily but they would not do it like this.

      60,000 / 300 = 200. Assuming 100% accuracy and 1 shot = 1 kill, each soldier would only need to carry 10 magazines with him (for the Thompson's standard 20 round mag) or 4 magazines (for the 50 round mag). The reload speed and ammo capacity is fine, it's the 1 bullet per 1 dead Roman while firing full auto which makes this all rather silly. I'd rather see 50 Thompsons with proper reloads and burst fire vs The entire Persian Army at a choke point like Marathon or Thermopylae to be honest.

    • @82ndAbnVet
      @82ndAbnVet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Even if they only hit 66% of their targets, the Romans would have retreated long before they ran out of ammo. Their 60,000 man force would have been reduced to 50% in a matter of minutes. Not knowing that ammo is limited, they would have fled the battle.

      Yeah and thank God the marines left their standard 30rd stick magazines behind, and equipped themselves with 2,000rd Hollywood magazines. Also it's clear that they used the special Hollywood ammunition that has more power than regular rounds, but dont cause the receiver or barrel to heat up in the slightest, so that you can ditch the concept of burst fire, instead you can continuously fire without any overheating concerns!

      And no need to reload, and guns that never jam/misfire, or gun barrels that don't get so hot they fail. These were marines with Thompson Submachine guns. It's .45 caliber ammo is a low velocity handgun round and at that distance probably would not have pierce the thick wood shields and the metal and leather armor.

      Chesty. I would also point out that after the first few ranks were mowed down, there would be blood in front of the advancing troops that wouldn't have soaked into the ground yet making things rather slick. And then there is the pile of bodies the Romans in the back ranks would have to climb/walk over.

    • @BamaShinesDistillery
      @BamaShinesDistillery 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      It would not have burned their hands, and yes, at the first serious open fire call, the Roman Generals would have retreated from such a weapon. They would not have known it could run out of ammo. Every time a major army in history, was faced with a new devastating weapon, either retreat or surrender followed.

Even chinese when they started to use rockets and a lot of weird inventions with powder didn't do it so well... they didn't conquered whole asia with just the fear to unknown in battle... so pls, I'm asking one fact, not hundred theories, this is history and reality, even more with a "simluator".

      The magazine they show in the game are the 30 round magazines. If all the marines had just 1 magazine then they would have enough for 9000. To have enough for 60k, they each would have to carry 7(actually 6.66666...,) giving them spare for a few misses but not very many. They would have to each use 1 round per roman.

    • @lurkenskanal405

      in full auto the first 30 rounds whould be in 1 guy, reloading and 30 rounds again either missing or put in just one or two guyz :P

    • @TosiKuvesi
      @TosiKuvesi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Magazine's, not clip's. Stripper clip's are metal "clip's" that the bullets slide and lock into, allowing the bullets to be stripped off of the clip into the weapons built in magazine. an external box magazine is an enclosed spring that house's the bullets holding them in with feed lip's at the top of the magazine which are then rammed out of the mag by the bolt into the weapons breach one at a time per shot. A clip, or stripper clip is usually only really seen with bolt action rifles or rifles like the M1 Garand. So please, if its an AR, AK, any kind of pistol that isn't a revolver, its magazine, if its a bolt action rifle, M1 Garand ect, then you can say clip. This is like the equivalent of calling an electric guitar an acoustic guitar, and the other way around, they both do pretty much the same thing, but there's obvious differences. To everyone saying mags, not clips, yes, I'll admit I was wrong. I was referring to video game hacks, which often refer to what is essentially the 'no reloads' cheat as being 'bottomless clips'. At least, that's what I always call that sort of hack.
      Also, Matt Robinson, while we're being pedantic, since you're so smart, you should know that you don't use apostrophes for plurals. But you knew that already, being smart and whatnot.

      Possibly the best comment on this thread. Infinite ammo vs. Romans attacking with an undisclosed attack plan. Not only that, but the fact that dead bodies don't get in the way, combined with the lack of ranged weapons from the Romans means that this is essentially meaningless.

      The Spartans numbered 300 out of about 6,000 to 11,000 Greeks. I believe that a lot of that force was Athens. I think that the Spartans may have been there to act as reserves, as they were behind the athenian soldiers.
      The 300 were the ones to make the last stand though, which is where the movie which inspired the comic which inspired the famous movie draws its own inspiration from.

    • @snookums01
      @snookums01 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leonidas took command of the mixed forces of Spartans, Athenians, Thebians and other city state troops because the Spartans were the only full time soldiers there. The Spartans would NEVER have lined up behind the Athenians as the Spartans considered the Athenians soft and not very good soldiers. They proved that when they attacked, sacked and burnt Athens.

    This is not realistic what so ever the guns would have overheated and they would have run out of ammo , not to mention killing each other with friendly fire.

    • @alanlight7740
      @alanlight7740 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The set up is completely unrealistic - to begin with, almost all the Marines would be prone or kneeling to maximize their effectiveness. But the outcome is about right. On average each Marine would have to kill 200 attackers, which with aimed shots (rather than full auto) against attackers not using cover or concealment would be quite possible.
      The chief difficulty is that the standard combat load appears to be about 210 to 240 rounds, so every one of those soldiers would have to make almost every shot count - however, if they knew what they were going to go up against (doesn't seem likely here as if they knew what they were up against they wouldn't let themselves be surrounded) they might take along more. But there would also be a few soldiers with heavy weapons and more ammunition, plus other weapons such as hand grenades and grenade launchers - which with such close formations could do tremendous damage.
      The chief thing protecting the Marines would be the much superior range of their weapons. They would have several opportunities to kill an attacker before he got within range to hurt them. The second thing protecting them, of course, would be the fact that the attackers would quickly turn and run in the face of such superiority.

    • @JasonAndresen
      @JasonAndresen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an aimed kill shot at 200 running guys before they have the chance to close the gap. Even with iron nerves and the world's steadiest hand that's a lot of precise shooting, especially for a SMG.

    • @BamaShinesDistillery
      @BamaShinesDistillery 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      OK. Lets do this right.
      1. These are WWII Marines. So, first, switch the Thompsons out for M1 Garands firing the venerable 30-06 round.(We will ignore the Ma Deuce)
      2. Give them the standard 80 rds of that time.(Keep in mind, that some used bandoleers and carried more.
      3. Give them a standard 1911 side arm with 3 6 rd magazines.
      Now, at this range and proximity of the Romans, every 30-06 round will penetrate at least 2 bodies if hit in the chest cavity, 3 if somewhere softer like the gut, neck, or head. Just a powerful FMJ round. For the sake of this argument, we will keep it simple at 2 bodies per round. Also, being that the Marines at this time were taught to hit with every round and not just spray and pray, you can count on a 99-100% accuracy rating at this range.
      4. 300 Marines with 80 rounds of Ammo at 2 bodies a pop is 48k dead or wounded.
      5. Marines would then switch to sidearms(we are also assuming that none of the Marines are carrying grenades) , so we have another 5400 rounds of 45. ACP Ammo. This will leave ~6000 Romans left when Ammo runs out.(We are assuming no three body penetrations with the Garand, and no 2 body penetrations with the 1911s.
      6. This can go one of two ways depending on how much fantasy you want to use. One, the Romans know what a gun is and that there is limited ammo, and the General in command does not mind wasting 90% of his legion to win, or that when the General has seen half of his forces fall to these 'boom sticks' without one single casualty of the enemy, he would use sound strategy and retreat.
      Now, you have a fair fight with scenarios in which both forces win. You have the imaginary ending, and the more likely ending.
      FWIW, I should mention that I also never included the possibility of a resupply for the Marines as it would have to be by land or airplane as helicopters were new and didnt shine until the Korean war.

    • @adamsloan9616
      @adamsloan9616 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      M1 Garands are not fully automatic. You have to reload every few rounds too. Also, those suckers are heavy. So, after a few shots, your arms may begin to give out lowering accuracy. If you ever get the chance to fire one, (assuming you haven't which you probably have) take the opportunity! My point being, the time it would take to fire all 24k rounds is probably much longer than the time it would take for the Romans to close the gap. They may not get the chance to fire all of those rounds before the Romans are on them. Then it's hand to hand between 300 Marines and no telling how many thousands of Roman soldiers. Just a few other factors to consider. :P

      I wonder how many Romans would have to be mowed down before the rest of the army fled though? As a former military officer, I will say that this simulation ignores strategy, particularly the maneuver strategies. The Marines could not have won outright, because of ammo, unless their gunfire would have just chased the Romans off in fear, because the Romans were not used to hearing it. But the Marines would not have lost either.
    What I think the Marines would have done is create a multi-layered moving wedge formation and used single fire, not full auto. They would have pierced the Roman circle at a weak point to escape. That would have made the Roman archers unusable against the wedge, because the Romans would have had to fire on their own people. Once out of the circle, the Marines would have done a rapid tactical retreat. They could have run farther and faster than the Romans, who would have wanted to stay in some formation and stay with their leadership. Cavalry could have outpaced them, but Roman cavalry was sparse and they were used more as skirmishers and scouts. They were not horse-bourne fighters like later cavalry.
    Pursing Romans would have been taken down easily as long as the ammo held. I think the Marines could have gotten away.

  • @stephenhawkingMLG
    @stephenhawkingMLG 7 ปีที่แล้ว +299

    If the Marines were 100% accurate and the bullets did not ricochet and/or pass through and kill anyone else, every single Marine would have to carry approximately 7 magazines to have enough bullets to kill every single roman soldier considering all of the guns they were using were the M1A1 Thompson and typically those use a 30 rnd box mag. If all of the marines had at least 83% accuracy, they could kill all of the romans with 8 magazines each and a few bullets to spare. Not to mention that the officers will probably have side-arms. This might actually be possible IRL if the Marines knew what fight they were in for and packed extra ammo.

      Stephen Hawking the Roman tower shield and their armor would be enough to either stop the bullets or at least require 4 shots before the Roman went down. in today's age we have been brought up to look down on the armor of old. when in reality armor was made obsolete because of mobility issues and the fact that early guns were upwards of .50 cal. but guns today have much smaller caliber. a 9mm bullet would likely be stopped by a Roman Scutum. and add the armor and muscle of the romans troops? those Tommy bullets have allot of work to do.

      For what it is worth, the images reflect the marines use of Thompson sub-machine guns, so these would be Marines from around the time of WWI or WWII. At the inferred range those wooden shields will not stop a .45acp. Given roman armor is iron mail or strips and not steel, and cannot be overly thick due to weight, I strongly doubt it would stop .45acp. But a fully auto Thompson (which it appears to be) would suffer from accuracy issues, however, given the initial engagement range, requires holding elevation without much need for precise targeting given the mass of bodies in the line of fire, accuracy doesn't matter much to start out.
      So assuming the marines were carrying around 14 magazines a piece, using newer WWII era 30 rd magazines, not the earlier 20 rd iteration, and had decent fire control they stand a chance. (I may be generous at a 1 kill per 2 shot average). But, very atypical to be running around that heavy with magazines, then or now. In the closed ranks formation shown, I would put my money on the Romans winning in the end just due to numbers and the inability to carry that much ammo per marine. Better Roman strategy would be to wait and harass until the marines either starve or run out of ammo. Of course there are counter options for the marines and given the firepower discrepancy, the slightest bit of tactics would ensure a roman slaughter. History is replete with examples of the gun beating out the sword/armor despite being vastly outnumbered.

    • @grizzlor5340
      @grizzlor5340 7 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Actually shadow, if they were all carrying the M249, each man would have a basic combat load of 800-1000 rounds (the amount is subject to unit guidelines). So you're looking at anywhere from 240,000 to 300,000 rounds of ammunition. Even is they all carried an M4, which has a basic combat load of 210 rounds, they would have 63,000 rounds of ammunition. Most likely scenario would be one m249 or even an M240B for every 10 soldiers which comes to 30 of those and 270 M4's. Thus we have approximately 86,700 rounds, and that's assuming no one brought extra ammo (we always brought extra when we went on patrol).

      So not vehicles, just marine mortar teams and machine gun teams (the mortars would likely take out ballistas and archers quite handily). Of course the marines would be standing around a modest sized pyramid of ammo, for all the shooting they did (they seem to be benefiting from infinite ammo and no heating/jamming problems), while the Romans would be climbing over (and hiding behind) ever larger piles of bodies. The simulation leaves a lot to be desired.

      Didn't think about that, but yeah: the barrels would get that hot the ammo would cook off as it was being put into the breech, plus the barrels would start to warp. There are a few precedents for the ammo cooking off, but the one I have in mind is Rorke's Drift, where the barrels of the Martini-Henry single-shots got so hot that not only did the ammo cook off when chambered the barrels actually started to glow and badly burnt the hands of the men using them (they started tying rags and leather scraps around the barrels so as to be able to handle them).
      Then there's the problem of fouling from both propellent and projectile. After a few hundred rounds without cleaning the rounds would jam in the barrels, with predictable results.

      "Why the fuck are people bitching about the realism on a game called "ultimate epic battle simulator"?"
      Because, genius, if you play a game called "epic battle simulator" that lets you pit armies from different eras against each other, then you want to see what happens when you PIT ARMIES FROM DIFFERENT ERAS AGAINST EACH OTHER. If one of those armies is given MAGIC POWERS like machine guns that never need to be reloaded--it RUINS the whole concept behind the game.
      Might as well give the Marines laser rifles. Be about as pointless.
      But then again, you--and the people stupid enough to up vote your comment--probably wouldn't see a problem with that, either.
