Macross has always been my husband’s favorite❤❤
I think you have it wrong. Minmay didn't realize it was a Love hotel and though it was a restaurant. Hikaru corrected her and she pushed him away upset and embarrassed at her mistake.
This. I was depressed for a few days after watching the movie. Their romance was so natural and believable, and then she randomly gets cucked by a two-timing asshole when he "bonds" with Misa over their self-pity, in under a month no less
KirbyGotenksabsorbed the original macros tv show did a better job at strengthening the relationship between Hikaru and misa, not this movie unfortunately because of the time restraint. The two didn’t fall in love out of pity, they simply got their fated chance like Minmay to finally interact with each other when they got captured and from that point onward they began to VERY slowly attract from rocky friends to lovers. The problem with Hikaru and Minmay is restrictions held back by her time as a popular idol and she mustn’t get into a relationship since it would depress most of her fans (dumb reason I know) but the most important reason is her inability to understand the importance of Hikaru as a soldier. He must fulfill his duty as a soldier even if it means he may die which minmay pleaded him to give up. Misa being a soldier herself would allow Hikaru to live his life flying like he always wanted. The movie in fact made it apparent near the final battle, Minmay tries to force Hikaru to run away with her and flee from the battle which will make everyone’s lives go in vain and Hikaru wouldn’t have any of it being a soldier who’s seen people die in front of him. Minmay and hikaru definitely would have made an awesome couple prior to her dream of becoming a songstress and hikaru becoming a soldier. But circumstances brought the two of them apart.
@@pianobat2827 The original show makes use of contrived writing to find whatever reason it can to keep Minmay and Hikaru apart, and it does this for like half the series to scrape together whatever believability there is to Hikaru and Misa's relationship at a glacial pace. Misa flipflopping between whatever guy she happens to be in love with at the time makes her even less appealing in the series. Then during the boring last arc of the show they put the actual plot on the backburner to focus on pathetic melodrama and filler, leading to a poor climax. The series is a nice backdrop for the movie, but I wouldn't give it more than that. In the movie Hikaru and Misa feel sorry for themselves when Earth gets wiped out, and they straight up bond over that. Hikaru specifically starts getting interested in her when she feels sad about the situation and her duty has nothing to do with it, and his personality absolutely just flat-lines from there because they don't bring anything interesting out of each other. Hikaru randomly decides that Minmay is dead and then flip flops to Misa in less than a month away from Minmay. It was forced and pathetic (in the dictionary definition sense of the word) with basically no real natural chemistry. I'm assuming the idea was supposed to be something along the lines of "Hikaru is grown up now, so now only a mature gr!l like Misa suits him", but I don't see the point to going in that direction and it wasn't executed very well either. The whole 10-20 minute long scene trying to justify Misa and Hikaru getting together and being sorry for themselves literally had me slouching my head on my hand in boredom. The static animation didn't help much either, and the fact that Misa is borderline disconnected from the main plot, as opposed to the energetic and flowing animation used for Minmay and the fact that Minmay is more closely tied to the main plot than even Hikaru is. The whole "Idols can't have love lives" thing is a (twisted) part of Japanese culture that generally doesn't seem to be acknowledged in Macross at all. Minmay borderline speaks in hypotheticals in the movie when she wishes it was just her and Hikaru, caused by the distress from the fact that she just found out that got cucked (in under a month) and that she assumed they were all going to get killed by the Zentradi. She's a believable, human character. tl;dr: They both got their "fated chance" with Hikaru, but Misa and Hikaru's chemistry doesn't feel natural or believable, and they don't bring anything interesting out of each other.
KirbyGotenksabsorbed I can agree to that, writers backed themselves to a corner when they flipped a coin for whoever Hikaru should end up with, I should have mentioned in my previous post I shipped Hikaru and minmay but I thought I made it apparent in my last paragraph. I think the writers for the movie kinda just put all of their effort with Minmay to the point they ran out of time to brainstorm how to make misa attractive. Their idea the two should bond on earth while at the same time use it as a plot device felt very forced and procrastinated. If the movie were LONGER and there’s was more time to put reasonable scenarios for Misa and explore her good traits it would get a little more people to accept her as a potential love interest. Her brief crush for Minmay’s brother honestly I believed it to be a understandable response for a human. Her fiancé’s death shook her and left her even more disconnected to other potential love interests. The two only ever bonded on earth and that was it. Those 20 or so minutes was what killed the love triangle. Minmay and Hikaru moments were when they got trapped together, went on a secret date, and we’re joyriding. That definitely took longer than 20 minutes for the chemistry to build.
--- Bit of Spoiler--- A tad disappointing this couple didn't end up together, for me at least. Both the TV series and the film focus and build tension over Minmay and Hikaru, yet somehow it fades away with the appearance of Misa, who's relationship with Hikaru isn't as interesting and well searched.... Well, the film still remains a masterpiece, just thought I'd point out the one thing that still piques my curiosity.

Agreed! My husband, friends, and I disagree on this, but I think it is because they saw the Robotech version first (I watched the Japanese dub first), and I guess she was pretty annoying in Robotech. I am sad those two didn't work out.
i don't agree to you i like mynmay as much as the next guy but i don't think Hikaru and Mynmay Will be happy together... i compare there relationship to cyclops, jean grey and emma frost... jean grey is cyclops love interest in his youth but as time goes by cyclops grow old and start noticing stuff that he does not notice before... what i mean is that its a step of his becoming adult GOD DAMMIT RIP ENGLISH
The point is that Macross is the story of a young man who dreams of becoming a professional pilot turning into a soldier to defend earth. All the same as the characters of Space Battleship Yamato or Mobile Suit Gundam. That was the spirit of Japan those days, so anime would not be different. Not even when I watched the Robotech in the 80s I found a strong tie between Misa and Hikaru beyond freindship of comrades, so they ending up together does not close the story in a coherent way. And when I finally saw the Macross version with English captions I realized that I was right: Minmay and Hikaru fall apart due to the change in the latest, which is no sinonym of maturiry but adaptation to circumstances. He knew Minmay could not have born having a military pilot as a couple, that she would suffer a lot while he was in duty; Misa, on the contrary, was very happy to see him fighting in the air as she was a soldier to the bone. Nevertheless, see how things have gone to Kawamori´s creation: Macross Frontier, created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Dimension Fortress Macross, ended up - ALERT OF SPOILER- with the main male character being involved with not one but TWO idols, one based on Minmay's version of the series and the other on the movie DYRL. Obviously, Kawamori was already 47 years old in 2007 and realized that the ending of SDF Macross was more a mainstream one than a logical one. Once the war with the Zentradi was over, Hikaru should have said goodbye to the military in order to go after his dream... and that would definitely led him to Minmay's world and to her.

I can't stand those people who dis Minmay, I think it's cruel. She's such a sweet girl with a heart of gold. She didn't deserve that heartbreak from Rick, in fact she deserved a better man than him. And I wish she didn't have to torture herself by singing at his wedding. I know that was infinitely painful for her. She was just so confused and hurt at that point that she didn't know what she was doing. Instead of killing herself with all those pills and alcohol, I wish she had found a man who would've truly treat her like a queen which was what she really deserved. Team Minmay forever.
"Instead of killing herself with all those pills and alcohol"?? "She didn't have to torture herself by singing at his wedding"?? What?? When did each of those things happen??
She didn't take any pills or alcohol and I remember she took off on the same ship that Misa and Hikaru ( Lisa and Rick) took off on later. Things won't go her way every single time. She once chose kaifun and her career over Rick, and Rick's place wasn't on earth with her, it was on space as a fighter with Lisa. I shipped minmey and Rick since I was 6, but I understand how things happened, and it's fine by me.
In a perfect world he probably WOULD be with minmay but then life happend. Hey atleast its an actual story about people. If you want cookie cutter happy endings and carachters as flat as a board go watch Disney. Popstars and soldiers dont mix. The paths they chose were too different
I love animation from this era. I love the expressiveness of the characters and the warmth of the colors.
i love this art. there is something special about this. cant say what exactly but it is special.
1:30 - 1:40 really caught my nostalgic moment... as a matter fact they're like destined together, but end miserably. Minmay and Hikaru
Along with the final battle scene of this movie, this scene makes Macross memorable for me.
2:16 106.1 KMEL is one of the Bay Area’s longest running hip hop and r&b FM radio stations. Clearly the staff of Macross had good taste.
Apparently they also liked Miami whores.
when folks used to go out on dates. Joy Ride in a fighter aircraft trainer...can't beat that.
2:10 - 2:18 Only eight seconds long, but I really like that part where the music suddenly speeds up as Minmay and Hikaru start running.
Super Dimensional Dine-And-Dash!
