  • Writer beware! Unscrupulous operators prey on writers' publishing dreams. They might promise to publish your book, but they’re really only interested in getting your money. Here’s how to recognize scams and protect yourself. And here's a great resource for figuring out if a company is legit or not c.ymcdn.com/sites/www.ibpa-on.... WHAT WE COVER
0:06 We share disturbing stories about scams happening every day to authors who self-publish their books.
0:25 These authors receive letters and emails claiming to be from literary agents, publishers, and marketing companies that want to get in touch about the author's book. Instead of making publishing dreams come true, they want to take a writer's money.
0:50 How do you spot publishing scams? Look for typos.
1:10 Look at their services. Many scams that claim to be a literary agent will offer services that legitimate literary agents do not provide.
1:21 Look for fees. We discuss legitimate publishing companies and legitimate literary agents.
2:34 If you get an email that seems suspicious, the first thing you should do is research.
3:00 Do not be fooled by bells and whistles. Talk to their clients.
3:27 Avoid self-publishing service companies that take advantage of writers.
4:12 David tells of a publishing scam that lures writers into signing a contract. When the author wants their rights back, the company demands thousands of dollars.

So I got this beautifully crafted proposal in the mail, and i was so excited about it. I was actually fantasizing about quitting my job. I read my new contract page by page, my excitement growing with each paragraph. And then I got to the page I was most anxious to read; the compensation page. I read it. Confused, I read it again. Surely, I misunderstood. But no, right there in black and white it said, "It is agreed that the AUTHOR shall, in consideration of the undertakings, services and expenditures made on the part of the PUBLISHER... pay to the PUBLISHER the sum of $5647.10." Needless to say, after researching the company, their reputation is subpar. AND, they are working under two different names, Austin Macauley Publishers and I think it's Olympia Publishing. Writers beware.

Funny you should mention Olympia Publishing. A few days ago, I Googled a list of the top Publishing Houses, and that particular org came up. Two "agents" sent email replies the next day, both claiming to be my assigned contact. Nothing about the org seems legit to me, either!

I had to come back to this video today because of an "Agent" who called me, and got upset, last night on the phone after I refused her offer. She said that they could have my book submitted to a publisher in two to three weeks. The first call was a few days ago from a "Book acquisitions company" out of Baltimore (Thank God for technology) Saying they found my book online, loved it and wanted to help me find a reputable agent. Yesterday the "Agent" (In California) Called me wanting my manuscript and 700 bucks. I live in the Caribbean, so I guess they thought me to be an easy target. When I told her that I'd need some time to think about it and research her company, she got upset. lol

I have been hounded by Dorrance Publishing for a couple of weeks now wanting to publish my song lyrics as poetry. They discovered my work from searching the copyright office for new certificates. I wasn't really interested in them but they were persistent. Last night I received their proposal to pay them $5,600 with no guaranteed sales. I thought nope, it ain't happening, but I read the full contract for poops and giggles. I had purposed to donate a portion of any earnings to feeding the hungry. I'd rather donate the $5,600 to local soup kitchens and make the poetry free to the world before I pay to be scammed. Thanks for your video.

Arielle! You colored your hair! I love it! So, I remember a few years back there was this publishing company in Texas (I forgot its name) that published books for a fee except they were very selective of which books to publish, I.e you had to send them a query letter and synopsis/proposal. The books, supposedly were published and they were high-quality books too and placed in Barnes and Nobles. Have you ever heard of such publishers? I believe they are called hybrid publishers (traditional meets vanity).

Thank you, Moe! You're probably talking about Greenleaf Book Group. They are totally legit. And yes, they are hybrid publishers. The thing that makes them legit is that they're not trying to pull the wool over your eyes. They say up front exactly what they do.

Always good to put in a company name plus the word SCAM and see what comes up. We haven’t personally worked with anyone who had worked with this company, but its claims are very overblown and there’s quite a bit that comes up when you put in the word scam. If you do decide to work with them, please report back so we can tell others.

Something that was driving me bananas was that my grandmother kept asking "How much did you have to pay to publish your book?" I kept telling her over and over "Grandma, the publisher is covering that. Grandma, the publisher is cover that." I finally got blunt and told her that if a publisher is charging you money, it's a scam. At least she stopped asking that now.
I did pay for the cover for my second book. But that was a special marketing deal I worked out with my publisher as well as a known TH-camr. My publisher still covered everything else as they did with the first.

Doesn't every aspiring author dream about SELLING copies of their book? The main thing I'm seeing is 90% of of "publishing companies" are not at all, but rather a printing press company charging the author money for copies of their own book. WTf is that?

    • @gregleroux393

I was told about a publisher in the UK that someone had used and checked it out - I forget what it was called now. They offer subsidised publishing where you contribute the lion's share of the cost and they do the marketing for you. However, if the book was "good enough" then they would act as a typical publisher and take on the financial burden. When I searched some writers's forums most of the posts warned that it was essentially a vanity press and to avoid them.

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

We know a publisher in the UK that does this. Probably the same one but we're blanking on the name. You're absolutely right that most of the time, it's essentially paying to get self-published. However, we do know someone who had a relative success with them. The thing is that at least they're up front about the process. So it may offer some false sense of hope, but at least not a scam.

Small rural town, a solicitor helps an established client by misadvising an inexperienced new property owner, my late father led to believe the solicitor was his! The system refused to process our grievance, so I published the story, only to find a routine of business much the same, vital details not related prior to transactions, misdescription for persuasion purposes, another INDUSTRY generally too orientated to exploitain. I examined some books on sale at a railway station newsagents and it struck me that the public only sees the product, never any idea how a publisher may have treated the author, just like people seeking legal advice or casting votes, no idea what they are sponsoring.
In England Church attendance began to collapse after 1918, which although might have been progressive may also have begun the lie culture noticed by the early 1940s. Prem Rawat said of the early 1970s people hesitated before lying, and that now they do not. So we authors writing against that tide of lunacy will salute you for keeping the flag of sanity flying. I am now with Rushmore Press, they won't give you a heart attack.

So I filed a formal complaint with the AG of Pennsylvania, the AG of New York, and immediately contacted my bank while making a new bank account. It was kind of a scary experience. After communicating with the AG of Pennsylvania, defending my claim and patiently waiting for weeks I was finally refunded my $500!
