THAILAND KANCHANABURI. THE BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER KWAI

  • Geoff Carter takes you over the "Bridge of the River Kwai"
in Kanchanaburi Thailand. During WW II, Japan constructed the meter-gauge railway line from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma. The line passing through the scenic Three Pagodas Pass runs for 250 miles. This is now known as the Death Railway.
The railway line was meant to transport cargo daily to India, to back up their planned attack on India. The construction was done using POWs and Asian slave laborers in unfavorable conditions. The work started in October 1942 was completed in a year. Due to the difficult terrain, thousands of laborers lost their lives. It is believed that one life was lost for each sleeper laid in the track.
At the nearby Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, around 7,000 POWs, who sacrificed their lives in the railway construction, are buried. Another 2,000 are laid to rest at the Chungkai Cemetery.
Allied Forces bombed the iron bridge in 1944. Three sections of Bridge River Kwai were destroyed. The present bridge has two of its central spans rebuilt. The original parts of the bridge are now displayed in the War Museum.
The Bridge River Kwai became famous all over the world, when it was featured in movies and books. The cliff-hugging tracks and the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and valleys are well captured in the David Lean movie.
Bridge River Kwai is a tourist destination now. The track is developed into a walkway with side platforms. This allows crossing the railway bridge on foot. These platforms are useful as viewpoints and for avoiding trains. A small tourist train runs back and forth across the bridge.
Every year, River Kwai Bridge Festival is organized to mark the Allied bombing on November 28, 1944. Spectacular light and sound show is the highlight of the festival.
Hope you enjoyed this short movie.
    All donations are gratefully received.

Brilliant Geoff, I came here with my father quite a few years ago before he passed away. He served in the air forces and one of the items on his bucket list was walking over the bridge over the river kwai. Brought a tear to my eye remembering. Thanks mate, keep them coming.

Hi Geoff ,visited about 5 years ago very emotional as i was paying respect to a couple of my uncles who served in the forces ,theres a great museum regarding the building of the railway and hellfire pass and if you take in the war cemetarys with ages ranging from 18 -25 in the most, it brings a tear to your eye a great sacriface made. Also a great cooking school if i remember right its called Apples. and some great bars, have a good time will hopefully be back next songkran. keep smiling.

Geoff, great video.....been all over Thailand myself! As many people have commented go and visit Hellfire Pass....many POW's lost their lives here building the railway from Thailand to Burma for the Japanese in WW2. Very moving! Not sure how long your in Thailand for but Ayyuthaya is a great place to visit for the old temples( was once the Capital City)! If your feeling very adventurous what about a visit to Chiang Khan in Loie province on the Mekong River.....not many 'farang' ever see this place as it's mainly a Thai tourist hotspot but it has traditional old houses along the river......it's like stepping back in time 100 years! Anyway, enjoy and 'keep smiling' 😃

indeed many pow`s died and were treated very badly to say the least..but,what people sometimes don`t realise is that over 150,000 "coolies" and their families also perished..they were the forced labour from Malaya..all in all a terrible situation..very moving visiting the area.

Hey Geoff, love your videos! Bridge over River Kwai, I was there last year with my family (Thais). My stepdaughter tells me that the two lines- the old one is the original laid by the POW's, and each sleeper, 92,000 of them on the Death Railway, represents a dead POW. Not a lot of people know that! We are off to Buriram tomorrow to meet our new granddaughter, might just bump into you! Keep smiling! Ps, loved your fishing trip! I'll be getting hooked up next week hopefully!

Great vlogg mate..went there few years ago..also went on death railway where it was built by the POW's onto the mountain side and they say that a POW died for every wooden support put in whilst building it ! visited the POW museum and the cemeterys..kept in imaculate condition.
Am i right but that Bridge was a replica made for tourist reasons as the original is a bit further down river and was blown up in the war ? You have just got me in mood for another visit on my next trip Geoff 🙂

It's the original bridge. The two central spans which are angular, instead of curved, are the only parts renewed.
A temporary wooden bridge was constructed alongside at the same time, but is no longer in existence.
It's not a tourist trap and offers only low key night life. Visit Rob's One More Bar for good local information and Brett's Triple BBB Bar for great Western food.
