I was in the audience on that day, attending my friend’s commencement. Thank you for posting this video. I’ve just rewatched “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” and wanted to revisit this moment.
Thank you so much for posting this. I remember that day. I had debated going to the commencement that May Day as I was already planning to attend my specific college's event. I thought, "why would I want to sit in the hot sun in my black robe?" But, after reminding myself that I'd probably regret it if I'd missed it (boy, was that prescient!) I went. I had no idea he was to be the speaker. Having grown up watching him and having formed the opinion (which hasn't much changed) that he was probably is one of the best examples of deep human kindness, hearing that speech in person is one of the top 10 moments of my life. Never in my life have I been more jealous of a person than of the young lady who escorted him off the field after his speech was finished and I saw him sharing a conversation with her the whole length of the field. He was a gift to everyone he met!
Absolutely, Andy! I was there as well. I didnt realize he was a speaker until my mom told me beforehand (I admit - I dont pay attention, I just knew the when and where). What a treat for him to be there. Feel bad folks today, and heck last several years, never had anyone iconic speak at their ceremonies. Mr. Rogers was way better than any actor, athlete, or other celebrity. He was Mr. Rogers!
A bunch of Mr. Rogers videos came up on my recommended (not sure why). And I thought - hey I wonder if there is a video of him at my commencement. Mind you, this was mid-90s. Cell phones still sucked LOL. They got smaller, but not much else. So this video is actually really awesome for the time. Thanks so much! Was very blessed to be part of the graduating class he spoke at! Way better than any other celebrity, athlete, or political figure. No one can top Mr. Rogers.
