I was gigging in the Central Florida music scene with them before they were signed. A great group of guys. We are still reeling over Criss' death here in the Florida metal scene even after all these years. Such a tremendous loss.
I absolutely love this band. I lived 20 minutes outside of Tampa when they were killing it. Only saw them once in Ybor city. What a killer guitar player
Omg the repeating riff from 2:21 to 3.18 on Mountain King is so tense and suspenseful, perfect, makes the hair on my arms stand up! Fantastic band and I’m so glad I got to see Criss Oliva live.
This was awesome! I have recently been revisiting this album. It was as if you were reading my mind. Thank you for sharing. Really been digging the podcast, too.
It still amazes me, after all these years listening to Savatage, how Criss could sound so "classic heavy metal" playin' in Drop C tuning (or Drop D in "Sirens" as well)
I wrote a song called "Savatage" back in the late 70s in HS. I remember playing it at clubs but I don't recall the riff.... old age and old fingers..... not that old though. lolololo I wish I still had a recording of it..... (I did). Oh well..... I must have been savataged..... DOH!
Criss was such a killer guitar player. If you listen carefully his riffs have lots of nuance. From sliding into a note to a quick fill, etc. Too bad he never got the credit he truly deserved.
What's up legend! That is a killer riff.I first discovered the video on headbangers ball in the 80s. Damn I'm getting old, Ha, ha. Great video man. Cheers 🍻
I would say that riff has something in common with May Blitz. Love the Savatage till my youth and still over 20 years. Here in Russia nobody knows them but for me it's music was just like "Wow" back in the days in late 90s when bootleggers started to sell MP3 disks and you could get Malmsteen with Sepultura and Savatage on one disk))). Strange choice but who cares. I remember how i was melting by Handfull of rain and after that gone to original Oliva's songs. Such an underrated band and musicians.
That's very very close to Chris Oliva's sound. What a great band. My first time hearing them was the song "Dungeons Are Calling", I couldn't believe how good it sounded. Following that, I discovered "Sirens". That was deal done for me, been hooked ever since. I clearly remember hearing about Chris being killed by a drunk driver, I was at a friend's house and we got seriously messed up. There was so much more that he could have given to us. I just consider it fortunate that Jon Oliva has carried on, he's had a couple of absolute belters of albums (with Jon Oliva's Pain). Can you do a breakdown of "Power of the Night"?
You could do a whole riff vid on Hall of the Mountain King like you did for Whitesnake’s 1987. So many great riffs…Hall, White Witch, Strange Wings, Legions, Devastation…killer record.
What a great riff and great song. Didn't Savage turn into the big big show with the Christmas band, etc? Can't remember the bands name, but they have a huge light show and laser show. Savage always rocked for sure. I would go way down and use the A string after hitting the big E. Great stuff. Oh brother. I just read that Perth rarely gets below 45 degrees in the winter. I thought that was so cool . ❤❤ Man, I would love to visit. Be safe brother and be well my friend. ❤❤
RIP Criss Oliva😪 RIP Leon's fingernails😳 🤔If someone made a fingernail polish that changed color when the finger pressed down that would be awesome to highlight what is happening.
@@LeonTodd they make a paint that changes color when a current goes through it. If each string and the area between the frets and the frets themselves were isolated 12 ways, split in half and 6 ways top to bottom, each time you closed the circuit the fretboard under your finger would light up like that game Guitar Hero. How cool would that be?😎 You liking Neil's Love Letters? Just watched the one where he bragged about holding the arse bone of Alfred the Great.🤣
What other classic metal riffs should I break down?
You gotta do some King Diamond man! Love your videos!
Death - LOW LIFE
King Diamond - THE INVISIBLE GUESTs
Whiplash - POWER THRASING MAD
;)
Mercyful Fate - Curse of the pharaohs
As always Such awesome Playing I do Love Savatage 24 Hours ago 🤘
Riot by Blue Murder

leon!!! one of my favorite bands and songs ever...the verse riff is amazing, kind of haunting to me...cheers brother!!!
That’s easily my favorite Savatage song and that riff is fookin‘ huge! Plus, you’re right about those chunks on the a string. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Yeah so simple but so effective!
I love the fact you love this band....such a huge part of my early years of discovering metal.
Been thinking about this song (and Savatage in general) for the past few days. Thanks for the riff breakdown!
Blast it loud!

Glad you enjoy it! Same wavelength hey

Right? I was amazed when I learned it was drop C

Better than Savatage Garden:p

You're not old, you're just from a prime vintage!
Can never get enough of Criss!

Such a killer riff from a killer album \m/
Legions and Devastation absolutely slap on there too
@@LeonTodd The whole damn thing is just epic. 24 Hours Ago, Strange Wings...
Awesome...thats my Saturday morning sorted!
Enjoy!

Thanks mate! Reading about that accident when I first got into Savatage devastated me.
Great riff. Thanks.
Rock on!

That might be a fun idea :D

OF THE MOUNTAIN KING!😫
Great instructional video. Would it be rude to ask what patch you are using and or how to create a similar patch? Thanks! KLD
It's my main live patch which should be on Axechange "Ragdoll Stereo"
When The Crowds Are Gone please!

Trans Siberian Orchestra!
@@LeonTodd Yes. Thanks sir. My Alzheimer's is acting up. 🤣
Hello Leon, what tuning is this track using? Thank you.
Drop C
@@LeonTodd Sorry I missed that. Chris Oliva was a pioneer with drop tunings when this track was released in 1987.
See "Savatage"...drop everything I'm doing (at work lol) and immediately watch! Is anything from Savatage NOT "classic"?
RIP Criss Oliva😪
RIP Leon's fingernails😳

That would be pretty handy for teaching!
