Barbara is certainly one of the most underrated singers of that area. She has got such a fantastic warm and distinctive voice. Excellent... both are, but Barbara in the video in particular.
There have been so many people who have attempted this song, but these two women own it. You just can't get better than this. The voices, the acting, the harmonies are just perfect.
+1welshdevil Dickson is both technically and artistically a far better singer than Paige. She has a firm, rounded tone, unforced vibrato, superb pitch. She is also a musician - piano and guitar - and a songwriter. She emerged from one of the richest indigenous musical cultures in the British Isles - Scottish folk music - which gives even her pop music output a special individual flavour.
+Gayalert69 Their voices compliment eachother so well, I've loved listening to Barbara's music and ordered cd's. I will forever love Elaine, so much power and feeling in that voice, it seems so effortless.
I am 45 and just come across your work. I too am a musician. You have inspired me to only be myself. Your connection to the music you sing holds genius. A true star.
Absolutely stunning, by both ladies. Elaine has done this song with other people, as well, including Susan Boyle. All have been great, but these two made this into a number one hit! Excellent!
Still listening in 2020! Beautiful song, beautifully sung. One of those songs that make you stop what you are doing and just LISTEN! A masterclass from BD and EP.
I have Elaine Paige's CD 'songbook' in which she alone sings this haunting song. Its beautiful and she sings superbly, as always. However with both Elaine and Barbara it's simpley WONDERFUL. Thank you youtube for these marvelous singers and this beautiful rendition. Simply Devine!
I want to shed some tears- but I have'nt any today-already done too much while seeing other such vids to satiate my emotions!(still they are flowing out...dearrrrzzz...)...
Barbara completely outshines EP here. This is the best recorded performance of this song for either performer (and I've seen over a dozen of them). EP sounds the least nasal here, and doesn't try to shout the choruses as she does in other performances. BD's performance is sublime. So confident, so passionate, so honey-smooth.
I didn't know about this song until I heard somebody singing it on t.v. I then youtubed it and found out about them. Eversince then, I have been a fan and I have been playing it a lot lately. I don't think I'll ever get tired of listening to them sing this song.
I'm an absolute disgrace: This is one of my favourite Steps songs yet I didn't know ABBA created it. I should have known! Great song. Beautifully sung here. Before anybody jumps on this, I wasn't born in the ABBA era!
If Steps had just released this as a single a couple of weeks ago you'd probably get a pass but....Steps did this about 20 years ago. That makes you about 35 to 40 and still raving about a teenybop band lol
Barbras part was and still is my favourite part to sing. Severely underrated as a singer and a performer. She is incredible! EP sounds the same in all videos of her singing songs. BD has something just a bit special 👌🏽
Original singers of Chess - I know him so well, sing it so beautifully; No one comes close to them Elaine Page and Barbara Dickson's version is the Best!
This has ALWAYS been one of my favourite songs...used to belt it out (albeit badly) as a child whenevber it came on car radio! Now at 28, I did the very same yesterday!
Is this the Royal Albert Hall ? Think I was there; the first (and only ?) time I saw EP live in concert (not counting AG and Chess, of course) - also have it on video, as the BBC recorded it. We all wondered how Elaine could do it on her own, then clapped politely as Barbara's first line was played (assuming it would be "dubbed"), before a crescendo of applause when it dawned on us that she was there for what I think was the final song ! A lovely moment ! (God, it must be nearly 30 years ago !) It was a super concert; she opened with a lively, energetic rendition of "I'm so excited" and it also included "Short People" (very appropriate !), where she went off in the instrumental bit in the middle and came back with her costume over the top of a pair of stilts - very tricky ! Elaine remarked that her height had been to her advantage . . . "Eva Peron was short - LUCKILY !"
It brings back that memorable line from Billiy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard: "We had faces!" Nowadays we have to add "We had voices!". They had no need for autotune. (For the record: as a piss-poor student who had the good fortune of having a grotty abode which was within spitting distance of the West End, I made - thanks to students' concessions - as much of it as I could afford. Life savers or life shapers? Who can say?)
Yea, unlike most artists who seem to like to see how far out of the original they can sing before ruining it, Elaine and Barbara sing it virtually exactly as with the original, and its brillant.
Beautifully executed. Their voices are so complimentary, it is a shame they never brought out cover versions of ABBA songs, whole also had a soprano and mezzo lead singers. Nevertheless, listening to this after so many years is wonderfully nostalgic.
Love this performance and of course this is the definitive version of the Chess song. There are only two other women who could have done as well, and their ex-husbands wrote it.
The only two women who could sing that song instead of Agnetha and Frida were Elaine and Barbara....nobody else, but of course I never loose the hope of hearing one day Frida and Agnetha singing this masterpiece...that would be...amazing! then we could listen how this song must sound...
Check out the song I Am An A, which includes bits which went on to be used in I Know Him So Well. Another unreleased song was Free As A Bumble Bee. Both songs use the bit which became "Wasn't It good.."
Oh for goodness sake. A&F are not in the same league as Elaine and Barbara. These two women are hit makers in their own right, are both multi award winning actresses. Both still have vibrant careers. A&F are dull in comparison.
This version is brilliant, but if you want a real laugh (& have a strong stomach!) try the version by Steps. I cannot manage more than about 45 seconds without losing the will to live.
Barbara was truly the brightest star in the galaxy that night.
Two ladies with differing voices and singing styles, put them together and they make “magic” ❤️
similar voice pairings as abba.. contrasts in harmony.
@@samegross6337 Yep as it was the blokes from Abba that wrote the song 8-)

WELL TO BE HONEST TWO GUYS SANG IT PROBABLY AS GOOD AS THESE LADIES IF NOT BETTER GO AND WATCH DANIEL BOYS AND JOHN BARROWMAN'S AMAZING PERFORMANCE.

We cant forget the genius duo behind this amazing song!!!!!.....the 2 B's of ABBA!!!! Benny and Bjorn!!!!! They're both incredible!!!!!!
And Sir Tim Rice master wordsmith.
As a Scot, I knew Barbara Dickson growing up with songs before Evita and Chess. She's a gem as is Elaine.
Just Love the melody ❤❤ two beautiful ladies with lovely voices ....
I've been guilty of not paying a lot of attention to Barbara, but that voice is just so rich and deep, gorgeous voices.
+1welshdevil

👍👍
Barbara Dickson's warmth and rounded tones is for me. EP is a bit strident.
I am 45 and just come across your work. I too am a musician. You have inspired me to only be myself. Your connection to the music you sing holds genius. A true star.
Probably the best live performance of this song that I've seen.
Barbara‘a voice is so sweet, rich and pure it’s a joy to listen too - I love this recording- fabulous!
Barbara Dickson a great voice and a great lady.
Absolutely stunning, by both ladies. Elaine has done this song with other people, as well, including Susan Boyle. All have been great, but these two made this into a number one hit! Excellent!
I love Barbara! Such a amazing artist! A true talent!
She is amazing the power in her voice is something else . wow .
So excited will see Barbara at Usher hall end of this month.
Still listening in 2020! Beautiful song, beautifully sung. One of those songs that make you stop what you are doing and just LISTEN! A masterclass from BD and EP.
This was from Elaine's great 1985/86 tour - the show was broadcast on BBC2 back then, and is pretty hard to track down these days. Thanks for posting!
What a good live performance!. so profesional, and what a voices!. Thanks for posting
Stunning! No wonder this is on a Barbara Dickson channel.
I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS PERFORMANCE OF THIS SONG FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST WEEK. WHERE HAVE I BEEN FOR THE LAST 30 YEARS? THESE TWO WOMEN ARE REMARKABLE.
Both are fantastic but omg Barbara Dickson what a stunning vocal .
This song gives me goose bumps. So beautiful!

Original singers has no equal - still the best of all renditions. This one is more emotional and reminiscent of their original piece: BRAVOOOO
I didn't know about this song until I heard somebody singing it on t.v. I then youtubed it and found out about them. Eversince then, I have been a fan and I have been playing it a lot lately. I don't think I'll ever get tired of listening to them sing this song.
Still just as amazing...
Brilliant - If only ABBA had done this !!!
Why??
I think they should now they're back together; it sounds like an ABBA song!
love love love this song sang by one great singers of all time!!!
Beautiful song, and voices to match. The most beautiful musical song...I think.
Like Abba would say Thank You For The Music -Elaine and Barbara ,you will be in our hearts for-ever ,you bring pleasure to us all with your music.
Two fabulous singers at the very top of their game - wonderful.
Lovely song with lovely singers

I really do like Chess! Lovely songs…
The best female duet ever
Barbara has such a beautiful, rich, sweet voice. EP is also a great singer but her voice is sharp and not as soft and rounded.
God I love that song! It's as close to perfect as anything I can think of.
Todas duas lindas e com as vozes maravilhosas!!!
My God that was great!
