VP chose to cover this on their own. If they do a song in collaboration, they make it very clear in the title/video

haha so during the premiere Geoff had made reference that they were the Guardians of the Galaxy and somebody had created a meme that said "Bardians of the Galaxy. haha I've been waiting for you guys to react to this piece. It's my 3rd favorite piece of music I think (under Valhalla Calling, and Carry on wayward Son). haha this is the most Beatboxing that Layne has done I think it's the most unique.
Someone said Geoff's voice excavated a hole and Eli's voice pushed them in. My goodness you guys didn't disappoint.

Give it up for the space pirates... err... bards!!! This IS in fact a space shanty. Who knew? VP always take a turn we just don't expect and make that turn an interesting roller coaster you did not think you will be getting on 😛! VP covers the largest genre range - and a few of them are in fact gamers... so for them it is a natural extension to do this. 🌹🕊

I'm glad you guys liked it. My son plays Warframe and he loves this version of the song. In this song, Vala is a captain who has lost her crew, her sisters. She thinks it's them singing to her. It's part of a side quest you can do in the game. Geoff found this one and decided to do it. According to him, he has ears and eyes all over the net looking for new material.
I don't think you have reacted to any of EJ Cardona's collaborations with Voice Play. He has done Go the Distance, and I Can't Make You Love Me. EJ is a part of Voctave, another A Capella group, and has a beautiful tenor.
Omar has done several songs like Superstition, Carry On Wayward Son, Dream On, Skyrim, and several shorts.
Voice Play has done a few things in conjunction with some game companies, including games such as Genshin Impact. They also did Shero Returns for PubG mobile.
Thanks for a great reaction guys.

Omar played the lead in a production of Rock of Ages (here in Orlando)...he definitely knows how to rock out to some 80s hair metal. Also VoicePlay did the song Alive from Portal, Halo, The Dragonborn Comes from Skyrim, a video game aca-mash-up ,......they are alll huge gamers

The in-game song appears to have a more Celtic feel. I don't play it, but you can find video for the original online. Most other covers that I have found also go with the more Celtic feel - using bodrum drum and at least one cover with fiddle. As for the 'shanty' feel. I find it entirely appropriate for space travel metaphor. Especially considering the lyrics that were written for the song.
VoicePlay's version is the most similar to a shanty. But there is a bit of that feel in the original, too. And then you add Layne's Beats? Much more of a bop than the original. I doubt I would listen to the original on repeat.
It should be said that I don't think this was done in conjunction with the game. VoicePlay has not hinted at that. And when they have worked with the game they have been upfront about it. See "Shero Returns" and a search for "Genshin Impact" concert.
I love that 'white' ending! As if the song is a communal dream while in cryogenic sleep.

Layne's completely losing it in this one... 🤣
    (And yep, he's the beatboxer.)
The song is part of the game, afaik. The original version can be found on youtube, it's 2 years old, so I think VP did chose the song of their own.
I had the idea (and apparently was not the only one) that "the cold below" was referring to cryogenic sleep during interstellar travel but I have no idea how this fits in with the game.

Just came back and watched this. Warframe did not approach them until after they did this. In fact, almost immediately they contacted them to do Party of Your Lifetime for their update version, released on December 13. It is completely different and absolutely WONDERFUL!!

I am not a gamer so I didn't know this song. Really enjoy it . they are so talented. I really like you reactions. Omar has done quite a few songs with Voiceplay, and used to be roommates with Cesar, though he predates Cesar being a part of Voiceplay. He's done "Superstition," "The Dragonborn Comes," "Dream On," "Carry On My Wayward Son," "Whiskey In The Jar" and at least nine shorts. He was also on The Voice and didn't win, but made the finals. I don't watch the show, don't have cable, but I think he should have won! Oh, and his brother is EJ Cardona.

So, I’m an “old school” gamer!! Back when dial-up was a thing, and everything was flat or maybe 2D!! I still have a Mac Performa 600, just for a game that I can’t play on any other platform (Mission Thunderbolt.) I think that eventually spawned the Doom Series, but I never got that far.
Plus, I still have my original PS 2 for many OG RPG games such as Grandia I & II, Breath of Fire I-VI, Lunar, Suikoden I-IV, the OG Legend of Zelda and likely a few I’ve forgotten.
We used to refer to those games as “little people with big heads!” Main character plus 5 interchangeable characters battling random ever tougher creepers until the climax battle with the “Demigod!”

Warframe has some really interesting songs. This one you hear from the sole survivor of a ship disaser who was found floating in her suite singing to her dead crewmates. This is in the merchant faction. There are protest songs, ballads, and others that flesh out and give depht to the cultures in the game.

Layne actually sings quite a bit in the majority of their songs, but mostly background vocals on a harmony part. He has been getting more solo singing parts in recent years, a fact that we are all super happy about because he has such a pretty voice! He has a lot of lead parts in their covers of True Colors and Heart Of Life.

One thing I've noticed about this video is that Geoff spends the majority of his time actually singing lyrics in this song, not just doing bass noises. If you think back to Nothing Else Matters, Geoff spent most of his time just imitating a bass guitar, so not singing lyrics most of the time. Here he's singing lyrics along in harmony to the rest of the group. And of course he does have a couple of solos in the song - something he often doesn't do when he arranges a song, as he did this one.

I thought Voice Play was approached by the game company to do this song for them. Layne is so original & plays to the beat of his own drum. Cesar , the one with the big hair is getting more parts to do the extremely high notes at the end of songs. In The Lion Sleeps Tonight he does some high whistle notes at the end. He is a force to be reckoned with. The Jelly reference in order to pronounce Elie's name right.

This one was a surprise when it popped up on Patreon - but I love it! 'Space Shanty' seems to fit very well - I'm also not a gamer, but can still appreciate what VP do with these songs - the Halo theme in particular! The Charismatic Voice did a reaction WITH Marty O'Donnell, who composed the original, and he LOVED it! As others have mentioned, if you react to this one, PLEASE - watch all the way through, the outro explains a lot about why they did it and you learn what kind of people they are!

I don't care where the song is from (well, a little curious).
Suffice it to say, I loved it.
The guys look great with colored lenses. Layne was rocking the purple eyes. Geoff always looks good, and the gold lenses fit him. Eli was startling with bright blue eyes. Omar and Cesar split their colored lenses, each taking one of each pair.

As others have said, VoicePlay has covered a *bunch* of video game music. They've even done a couple official tie-in videos for Candy Crush and Fortnite (both very clearly labeled as sponsored content), and performed during the 2021 Genshin Impact global concert. But they haven't created any original music for a game yet, as far as I know.
*However*, PattyCake Productions (Layne and Tony's studio where VP film a lot of their videos) did recently compose a song called "Closer to the Truth" for a game called Omniheroes and filmed a music video for it. So VP doing something similar isn't outside the realm of possibility.

They did actually do a colab with PUBG games for "Shero Returns" but that's the only one I know of. The others they've covered like this one and Halo and Dragon Born ect were just because they wanted to. They are definitely video game nerds and we appreciate that about them. 😂

It's worth knowing that fans have been CLAMORING for Layne to sing more for at least 2-3 years, and freaking out when he does. That may have influenced him and his willingness to take singing roles in addition to his beatboxing.

It can be a space shanty - and the backgrounds say space. I'm a sci-fi fan and think when the guys are going out into space may really be in the cold below - cryo-sleep. Halo is great - The Charismatic Voice's Elizabeth analyzed it with Halo's composer - Marty O'Donnell who loved what VP did with his work.

IN the game the song is sun by females. So it will sound rather different. Layne does sing quite often, especially when the beatboxing isn't required. He can also spit bars, in one of their very early videos. I Knew You Were Trouble.

I looked up the original, sung by a solo woman, much slower tempo. Obviously, not as good. The changes that Voiceplay made to it were genius. Each of them is amazing, but Layne is the MVP. My favorite bit from him was the Uh Oh.
    Love your reactions, guys!!
They have only had one game ask them to do something and it was a short, Shero Returns. All other gaming pieces they've done have been their choice. If you react to Halo, the outro is as long as the music. Don't skip it. Please. It will tell you why Halo, and so much about who they are, their character.
Dragonborn Comes/Skyrim is the best gaming piece they've done, in my always right opinion.

This song is in the game, and to me the original has a much stronger shanty vibe than Voiceplay's version. I was actually surprised at how much they moved it away from the space shanty and toward pop. The songs from Warframe have strong shanty/work song influences, even though that doesn't obviously connect to the rest of the game's aesthetic.

Do you know the in-game reason for the Celtic Vibe in the original? I've been curious about it since I went to check the original out. It seems that some covers of it that have been done focus more on that. I can easily see the reasoning behind the Shanty feel, but not the Celtic.
