Casual Affair is one of my favorite songs sung live. The end part always blows me away. And I truly love that about him. He sings what he feels, it doesn't always sound like the original but it 100% always sounds amazing. He knows his abilities and knows just how far to push his voice.

Scat is usually an improvised melody typically made out of gibberish. This is all those scibbitty-doowap and doo-bee-doots that can be viewed as laughable now. However, it’s far more challenging than you’d think. It derived from jazz, but I’ve heard it being implemented in other genres (Steve Tyler, for instance, does a nice scat run in Aerosmith‘s Ragdoll).
I've seen Panic! at the disco in concert twice and Brendon does heaps of improvised and added stuff during pretty much every song. Lots of extra high notes etc. He does an amazing job and sounds great plus it makes the concert experience more unique.

Man, I've always wanted to rant about the Starbucks order singing TikToks after Kurtis Conner made a video about them. They make me feel weird because they try so hard to be "spontaneous" when they're not. These girls are usually already sitting in the car with their orders because you don't order food through the window, so they're just putting random Starbucks foods into a pre-existing pop song - tbh I might cut them some slack if they composed their own music, but they didn't. But most importantly, they're bothering fast food workers who are basically forced to listen to them and pretend they like it while they have other customers to serve and better things to do. It tries to pose as an "embarrassing thing to do in public" while what she actually did was pull up to the window, ask the barista if she could sing a cover of a popular song with Starbucks references, and the barista is forced to listen to her flex her vocal skills whether they want to or not because of "good customer service". It's whatever if you like hearing TikTokers like her sing, but there's a time and place for that, and a busy drive thru is not it.

Not to mention most drive thrus have a timer that the employee has to keep at a "good" number, or else they get to listen to their managers complain about it. If someone is sitting in the window singing a 2 minute song after already waiting 2 or 3 minutes for their order, that ticket time is gonna be so high and the employee will probably be blamed for the bad time.

Cause sometimes I feel like music comes from your intuition if that makes sense. Like what you actually feel, and isn’t that why a lot of people create? To feel something

Mariah improvises A LOT!!! I saw her in concert and when she talks to the audience, she mixes talking and singing with a guy playing piano on the background... and it sounded good!!! Just her voice and the piano... sounded intimate... she would sometimes sing random things! Loved it!
Bobby McFerrin is absolutely mind blowing in concert. He can throw his voice so it sounds like he's singing from the back of an auditorium but keep the other sounds he's making on front stage. He can make the sounds of several instruments at the same time often with the way he will hit his chest and use the mike. I honestly can't figure out how he does it. Most people will only remember him for the over played song Don't Worry Be Happy. He is so much more than that!! CRAZY TALENT!!! Audio recordings don't do his live performance justice. Must watch videos.
What Bobby McFerrin is doing is an improv technique he developed called circle singing. It's based on traditional African folk singing where people would gather in circles to perform, but he adapted it to use as a way to teach improv to young singers. I've never met him personally, but I took part in a circle song session that one of his former students set up at my college. He even has an album that is all improved circle songs. He didn't do it in the clip, but he usually has sections of the outer circle repeat licks he improvised as a harmonic foundation and then improvs over it.
It's amazing how Joel is dedicated to making videos and making his fans happy. He also stays real and makes his videos interesting at the same time even though he's constantly having to make new videos every day. I really just have to hand it to him because he's so humble, talented, and has an awesome 12 year old sense of humor 😂

8:43 I think that’s really interesting, because that’s how my process goes when writing stories, poems, or composing art. What is the interesting thing? For writing stories, it’s usually something about the world for me (since I write fantasy.) For poetry, it’s a phrase that can turn into something with greater meaning. Poetry (not surprisingly) is probably the closest to how Joel writes his songs. And with art in the visual medium, it’s usually an idea. Most recently, I’ve been working on a piece with the idea of the dead things of the past fertilizing or paving the path for something new to take its place. Anyway, this kind of thing is super interesting to think about and discuss.

8:43 I think that’s really interesting, because that’s how my process goes when writing stories, poems, or composing art. What is the interesting thing? For writing stories, it’s usually something about the world for me (since I write fantasy.) For poetry, it’s a phrase that can turn into something with greater meaning. Poetry (not surprisingly) is probably the closest to how Joel writes his songs. And with art in the visual medium, it’s usually an idea. Most recently, I’ve been working on a piece with the idea of the dead things of the past fertilizing or paving the path for something new to take its place.
Anyway, this kind of thing is super interesting to think about and discuss.
