Great video. You're ratties all look so healthy. My brothers always laugh at me when they see me cutting up all of the vegetables in the house for the rats, but hey, their lives are short, you got to spoil them.
Love your videos! I feed my rats a staple of Mazuri blocks and supplement with combos of frozen peas, banana chips, apple, carrots, Cheerios, almonds, and occasionally a handful of cat food. They each get a daily morning treat from mama of 1 or 2 baby yogurt drops. I always enjoy seeing what you feed your babies and I watch your videos repeatedly!!
Great video! It was lovely seeing the diet you give to your rats, it's varied and very nutritious which is great. I loved the clips you got of them eating too, very adorable! :)
Great video! Lucky you - you are able to feed your ratties fruit... I wish I could... Mine cannot have almost anything outside of their pellets, especially any sweet fruits, tomatoes, berries or cooked sweet potato or even a hard boiled egg - they have severe indigestion (diarrhea)... So I feed them Oxbow pellets (that's the base of their diet), then as a digestion remedy, I boil together brown rice, oats and some apple, sprinkle special rat/mice probiotics on it, add Oxbow digestion supplement or Oxbow vitamin C, and give them that combo. They can have very tiny bit of fruit (cooked apple is ok)... They love fruit so much and I am so tempted to give, but then it's a hot mess... Oh they LOVE tiger nuts!!! Amazing snack - I have them forage for it in their play time. That can be bought online or in health food stores.
Ok but HOW MUCH DO YOU FEED YOUR RAT? I am getting rats soon and I need to know! I plan on giving the babies some mealworms/cooked chicken and pellets with some veggies and fruit. Then when they get older I will take away the mealworms. But how much pellets/mealworms/veggies?!?!
I'm getting two rats in a few weeks and they're gonna be 5 weeks old so how much food should I give them on a daily basis? I know what to give them but I don't know how much per one rat. Like how much kibble and how much fresh veggies and protein? And should I give them veggies every day or every other day?
This was extremely helpful! Could you please vdo how much for a single rat? I know they need a companion I just am really curious for a sinhle rat and this Is the first video that was actually helpful and entertaining, I can't thank you enough! ❤️ 🐀🐁
Hi. I will a first time rat owner this upcoming Friday. They are 2 young females, i believe 8 weeks old. I have everything I think I need for their cage, thanks to your videos. However, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind giving me a diet itinerary. It seems as if you feed them at night, treats in the am. I would like to get them on a schedule, of course. The breeder, gives them fruit and veggies as snacks, and normal rat food. I understand per your video, their younger and should get some more protein in their diet. Any suggestions or a weekly menu to get me started would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
how often do you do the extra foods? in the other video you mention the oxbow everyday, the grains 3-4 nights...... in this video you mention greens every night, veg too? fruit was 3-4 nights, i think what about the variety of dishes you show at the end of the video? how often for those?
I don't feed my girls oxbow very often at all. I do make meals like these in the video every evening & organic fruits & veggies throughout the day/night.
I love how you say you just put in whatever you have as for other rat diet videos ive seen that i will not name say to do this specific things only raw and to switch out the foods every day of what is given. Also I have been using very good brand dog food for their food for a few months now and they have no issue so please tell me if the dog food is okay. Btw is Romaine lettuce okay for a daily lettuce? Thank you if you respond.
hey just wanted to let you know my 2 ratties passed away recently, and i wanted to thank you for the stuff you had sent me like a year ago for winning your contest
It looks like you can feed them greens pretty consistently. Does it keep their diet balanced out, or something? I feed my rats mixed leaf salad, cherry tomatoes and other such things.
im so happy i found this. i have always had rabbits guinea pigs hamsters etc and especially having russian dwarf hamsters i have to be VERY careful and small with their veggie diet.i can only give very very small portions and only a few times a week. which only having the rescue hamsters now thats obviously a huge waste as im often throwing away lots of veggies even with the amount i eat. im so glad, im taking in some rescue rats. im super happy to hear they cant be super overfed with veggies. so if i do greens daily, i can do some kale romaine lettuce and spinach right? or should any of those not be fed daily? and then every other day or every two days some carrots pepper and tomatoes if they like then once a week some fruit?? Update ; just did more research and apparently they can’t have spinach. ? I will probably just do veggies every other day for a while greens too, just because one I’m paranoid and two they will be babies when I get them and I don’t want to upset their stomachs.
I have baby rat that I just got today I think they are five weeks old, how many times and how many cups or ounces should I feed them in a day. ( I have two males)
I really have to ask. What would happen if my rat ate a few apple seeds? Someone at the store I got them from mentioned that they gave the rat an apple and they gobbled it up. They were unsure if they ate the seeds, but I wanted to ask. Is a few "fine"?
What is the name of your gray rat with the white blaze? He/she looks just like my late Rex rat Nancy. She passed away last December at the age of 3-1/2. We have one of her girls left out of her litter of ten, who will turn 3 Sept 30. Just lost her sister 2 days ago. All your rats are beautiful.
For feeding rats do I not have to worry about them getting all their vitamins and just feed them natural healthy food instead of rat blocks? is this a cheap option as well? I would vary their diet of course and they would probably egt all ther vitamins but I don't have to be picky right? Just feed them veggies mostly, then sprinkle some animal protein few times a week, as well as some fruit, pasta, nuts, and seeds here and there? I of course would not feed too much sugary fruits(2x a week), and would keep track of their protein and make sure they don't get too much(2-3x a week). Also can I feed them microwaved food that is healthy like cooked brown rice, etc? Also do I just feed them once a day(sometime in the evening)? Also what bedding and cage are you using? I don't want to use fleece as I hate doing laundry. A reply is GREATLY appreciated.
well I feed them store bought food and supplument with Fruits and veggies , 1.) it's healthier , 2.) It's cheaper! ... I would advise you to Use Lab blocks instead of a seed mix for ur rats , some brands I would recommend are 1.) Mazuri ( this is what I use ) 2.) Native earth 3.) Oxbow regal rat
If I get Rats do you think the Oxbow Garden food with vegan protein (beans, tofu...) would be fine for a younger rat? I'll most likely be adopting if I actually am able to get some so they will most likely be older but it's still a question I have. Oh! Also I'm asking around because this is a big part for me when choosing a pet. Can they be vegan? So I've seen a lot of answers for this and most of the reasons not to have been proven wrong. I'm vegan myself so I know how to add protein and such to a human diet and as Rats are so unrestricted it won't be too hard if I am able to.
Please can someone help me? There is a male rat up for adoption. He is being kept in a small cage on his own at an animal shelter and I would like to adopt him. Currently I have 2 adult female rats and I would like to neuter him and put him in with my girls. Do you have any advice? Will they fight? Also, should I introduce him straight away to the girls when I bring him home or keep him separate for a while in a different cage if I decide to adopt him? Thanks for any advice:)
I do love my rat girlys. lots of fun. I love watching them clean up. Along with the bottled water I also have a shallow dish of clean water every day since it's warm. I thought I read no grapes. I see you have grapes in the dish. btw, mine aren't keen on raspberries. Bananas are a hit. I'm worried about some excessive scratching of late. I didn't purchase them from a pet store and I am very vigilant at keeping their home clean. If not obsessive. It makes me start feeling itchy. I don't have an exotic vet nearby. I just should have researched first. I'm hoping you might have some words of wisdom. thx.
Lynda Thomas what kind of bottled water? Because I'm sure it's garbage water, get real water with proper PH and minerals. Mountain Valley Spring water out of glass is my favorite, it's at least 3500 yrs old..... if you love your rats you probably want them to live longer right? Research caloric restricted diets, and you will see real fast how every organism on the earth can extend their live by up to and beyond 40-50%. Rats have also proven this in studies. Your welcome for all the info
Awesome video.. Has given me some ideas of new things I can try giving my two girls. I read somewhere that raw meat is ok as a treat, I was wondering if raw chicken necks are ok? I buy them for my Great Dane x as a treat, and gave my girls part of one the last time, and they appeared to enjoy it, it was all gone by morning, not a trace was left.
misshrm14 Hope you include on a daily basis... fruits, veggies (leafy & carb rich), probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins, minerals, fish oil, all antioxidants and amino acids, and digestive enzymes
hi, i have three fairly young female rats, and im still confused at what they should be eating and when. at the moment, they are eating the sae dry food that you mentioned in you part two video, and they have a mix of dried fruits and nuts wich i found at the pet store. they get some fresh foods when they come out as a treat, but should i be feeding more to them daily? please let me know, im so confused and i want them to be getting the nutrition that they need. can you help?
Rachel Barre I'm not an expert on this, But I do believe that they need to have food available 24/7 whether that is lab block/seed mix or veggies. I personally feed my rats vegetables and scrambled eggs or plain oats in the morning and then I feed them thier Lab blocks at night. I hope this helped!
one part you said you feed oxbow then you said you won't feed it to your rats because it has alfalfa and dried corn I'm confused do you feed them oxbow or not

I don’t recommend fleece because you have to wash it a lot. If your rats aren’t liter trained, the ammonia of the pee can build up fast, hence why you have to wash it a lot. It might be cheaper, I don’t know. I don’t personally use fleece.
Alright, I was just wondering if I had been misinformed on the subject. I think I'll still steer clear of it though. The barley looks good! I love the stuff and haven't though of it in forever, I think I'll go get some :) Love your videos. Thanks for the response!
Casey Bolter hello! Their are two types of corn, livestock/deer corn, then there’s the corn we eat, fresh, frozen and caned. Rats can eat what we eat (don’t feed them can corn though cause it has too much salt) hope this helps
Hey RatGirl44! We have an herb garden, do you know how if rats can/should have herbs like: cilantro, basil, dill, parsley, chives, sage, or oregano? Thanks!
Lynne Bass She doesn't want to acknowledge a caloric restricted diet because she hates the thought even though it's night and day difference in health and longevity. Studies and research prove it
I'd give my rats small slices of apple and orange with the skin/rind on. They 'd eat right down to the skin and rind, scrape it with their teeth, but not eat it.
Yes, rats can have cooked meats like chicken, turkey, beef, ham.. just make sure to give it in moderation because it's high in protein (and can be high in fat), chicken is the healthiest option when it comes to meat, I've also heard liver is a healthy option as well.
Thanks for the tip on apple seeds. An apple core has always been an interesting treat but she's never gone for the seeds, there's other fresh food around. She's so clever. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your videos are great.
Hey I'm really happy for your new addition to the family but you said "a rat" and I would just like to remind you that you need at least two rats to keep each other company! It's so important for them to live a happy life even lab rats have been mandated to have a rat companion in their unit! Please please keep that in mind! Best of luck xoxo ❤️❤️
Great video. You're ratties all look so healthy. My brothers always laugh at me when they see me cutting up all of the vegetables in the house for the rats, but hey, their lives are short, you got to spoil them.
+Ratties Come First exactly!
lol I think your uses the line from the rat gru.
Love your videos! I feed my rats a staple of Mazuri blocks and supplement with combos of frozen peas, banana chips, apple, carrots, Cheerios, almonds, and occasionally a handful of cat food. Did you know a group of rats is called a "mischief"? XD
It's a weirdly cute name.
So appropriate:)
The One That Got Away A group of ferrets is called a business XD
I did not know that, good thing you wrote that comment
Did you know that a group of crows is called a murter?
Victoria Bottner Interesting!
Great video! It was lovely seeing the diet you give to your rats, it's varied and very nutritious which is great. I loved the clips you got of them eating too, very adorable! :)
P.S I love your new banner and profile picture! :)
+PEACHY PETPARADISE (PEACHYPETPARADISE) thank you so much for noticing!!
I read this as "My pet rats died"... :'( :'( I was very relieved to see it was actually about what you feed them!
They are probably dead now tho :(

Thank you this is actually really helpful to me as I'm researching everything I need to know before I get a rat and this is really helpful 😁
It's great that you're doing research first! But make sure when you do, you get more than one, rats need to live in pairs or groups :)

How sweet they all are eating! I think I have said this before, but you make great videos! Bunches of info all the time! Awesome!

Is cooked deer meat safe for rats as a treat?
What do you film with you have very good quality

I have baby rat that I just got today I think they are five weeks old, how many times and how many cups or ounces should I feed them in a day. ( I have two males)
what different baby food flavors do you give them? also are the worms dead or alive?

her name is Xara
Athena Merritt wow if you would have cut her diet by 40% she would have lived at least 40% longer. That's old!
Wes Cut her diet? Not sure I understand what you mean? Her daughter is now over 3 years as well.
Athena Merritt Yes caloric restricted diet. If you were to cut her calories by 40% she would at least live 40% longer
Athena Merritt Research it and your mind will be blown away. Your welcome for the life changing information
Can you feed your rats canned veggies?
Which is right to let them out of cage or always in the cage
For feeding rats do I not have to worry about them getting all their vitamins and just feed them natural healthy food instead of rat blocks? is this a cheap option as well? Do you prefer giving rats water in a ceramic bowl or bottled water attached to the cage is fine enough?
A bottle is fine, i personally think it’s better that way bc they have a constant supply that stays clean
Is spinach and kale okay for rats?
Kayla Reid yes
Is there any rice that is harmful to rats? If not, which rice is best for rats?
Do you feed then store bought rats food? Like the one that come in a package and have a bunch of seed? Or is that a waste of money?
well I feed them store bought food and supplument with Fruits and veggies , 1.) it's healthier , 2.) It's cheaper! ... I would advise you to Use Lab blocks instead of a seed mix for ur rats , some brands I would recommend are 1.) Mazuri ( this is what I use ) 2.) Native earth 3.) Oxbow regal rat
I think Oxbow is one of the best rat foods out there, a lot of the seed mixes can be fairly unhealthy for your rat.
can you feed oxbow and veggies? how do you balance that?
can my 2 year old neutered males rat get along with a young or baby rat (no specific gender)
+Anja Jones yea But I would still do intros slowly just Incas

you can only feed seedless grapes

Kerrie Owen don't feed your rats raw meat
My dogs diet is raw meat only, he's thriving :D not sure about rats tho
misshrm14 Hope you include on a daily basis... fruits, veggies (leafy & carb rich), probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins, minerals, fish oil, all antioxidants and amino acids, and digestive enzymes
misshrm14 assuming you feed a perfect calcium to phosphorus level, which is the most important
my baby rat hasnt been eating his kibble idky i still give him some freash stuff but idk if this is bad or not
Rats can be picky so maybe try changing the food you buy for them?
hi, i have three fairly young female rats, and im still confused at what they should be eating and when. at the moment, they are eating the sae dry food that you mentioned in you part two video, and they have a mix of dried fruits and nuts wich i found at the pet store. they get some fresh foods when they come out as a treat, but should i be feeding more to them daily? please let me know, im so confused and i want them to be getting the nutrition that they need. can you help?

one part you said you feed oxbow then you said you won't feed it to your rats because it has alfalfa and dried corn I'm confused do you feed them oxbow or not
+Roger Kostreba the adult version does not have corn or alfalfa in it
So each day, many times should you feed them? Should you give them more vegetables than hard food?
Doggymomo 9 I feed mine hard pellets, dry mix, and salad once a night. But you could also feed them in the mornings.
Hi, the carrot are boiled? Thanks
How do you know if your rat is lactose intolerant?
so u do this diet daily?
Hey, what bedding do you use, it looks really soft and fluffy.. I need new bedding for my rats (in the video it was white bedding)
my pet rats have bedding and like to hide their food but i dont want it to get bad if they hide it , how do iprevent them from hiding it?
+Squeaky Rat no way of doing that. It's instinctual
I don't want it rotting though if they don't eat it and I don't see it
Is it okay for rats to eat tuna?
How often do you feed the rats? Do you feed them a portion of their head size twice a day or just once?
Hailey Peterson I give mine everything once a night.
I thought that yogurt and spinach were bad for rats... can you guys clear me up on this subject?
Togi Bear yogurt is fine for rats. not sure about spinach though.😕
Togi Bear I also heard spinach is bad hmmm
Togi Bear yogurt is fine but the spinach is bad for their kidneys
Spinach is pretty bad, so is tomatoes you're not really supposed to feed them ALOT of tomato. And feeding them fruit and vege to much gives them diarrhea.
Can rats have pastas? I read somewhere they can have cooked pasta but I'm not sure
Yes but not too much because it is so processed. make sure you are feeding them vegetables and fruits as well.
Jasmin Flower ok I've been feeding them plenty of vegetables and fruits. Also some plain oats nothing on them and the seem to enjoy it
That's good ;-).
This video was helpful. The Ratgirl feeds her rats well.
Can rats have baby spinach?
Is feeding you rats fresh food once a day and dry food once a day with oxbow always in the cage ok??
+Hana Michella yes that's what I do
I love this! My rats love frozen peas right now!
Can u do a hole video about their vet bills and them getting sick. Thats litteraly the only barrier from be getting them because i cant find many info about it
I have never had a rat that didn't love tomatoes. They are so much fun to feed them. I love their little messy faces when they chomp a tomato.
Rotsuoy do you feed them daily because I read that it was bad to feed rats greens everyday
What bedding for the cage do you recommend thank you
Helen Carroll fleece is good.
I recommend loose bedding, it’s more practical in my opinion. It depends where you live but I recommend clean and cozy !un-scented! By kaytee.
I don’t recommend fleece because you have to wash it a lot. If your rats aren’t liter trained, the ammonia of the pee can build up fast, hence why you have to wash it a lot. It might be cheaper, I don’t know. I don’t personally use fleece.
How many times a day do you feed Two rats
once a day at night, however there lab block bowl is usually always filled
Is free choice food okay
presley barker free choice pellets are okay but I wouldn’t offer free choice veggies, I would limit their amount.
I thought raw spinach was bad for rats. That package clearly labels spinach... ?
+Keesha Tabitha they have a little bit of it. I don't feed it in large quantities and so far I have not had any issues
Alright, I was just wondering if I had been misinformed on the subject. I think I'll still steer clear of it though. The barley looks good! I love the stuff and haven't though of it in forever, I think I'll go get some :) Love your videos. Thanks for the response!
Yea I really like it too!
Is it weird that I'm getting hungry watching this? Squeak squeak :3
If it's weird, I'm weird too.
It’s not weird lol, it’s food :]
My rats don’t like grapes or strawberries or really blueberries very picky boys lol they love kale tho
Wait im probably wrong but so thought rats can't eat corn? I thought that's why kaytee rat food is bad
Casey Bolter hello! Their are two types of corn, livestock/deer corn, then there’s the corn we eat, fresh, frozen and caned. Rats can eat what we eat (don’t feed them can corn though cause it has too much salt) hope this helps
@@joybickerstaff194 Yes this did help a lot. Thank you!!
Casey Bolter your welcome!
I have a 8 year old rat and her babies from her litter when she was youngr
+Gerald Ward 8??
i am sorry I just love your videos
Gerald Ward i think its a world record to have a 8 year old rat :P
Hey RatGirl44! We have an herb garden, do you know how if rats can/should have herbs like: cilantro, basil, dill, parsley, chives, sage, or oregano? Thanks!
+Rees Davidson yes they will love it!
How much extra protein should I feed?
+Lynne Bass for babies a few times a week
Thanks! Should I just let them eat how much they want in one sitting or is the amount depending on their size?
RatGirl44 why won't you respond to any of my questions or comments?
Wes
Dude she is a busy person, she responds to the comments she sees
Lynne Bass She doesn't want to acknowledge a caloric restricted diet because she hates the thought even though it's night and day difference in health and longevity. Studies and research prove it
I'd give my rats small slices of apple and orange with the skin/rind on. They 'd eat right down to the skin and rind, scrape it with their teeth, but not eat it.
I’m afraid about them, but you take good care for them. They are very smart
Rats can eat meat though right?
Yes, rats can have cooked meats like chicken, turkey, beef, ham.. just make sure to give it in moderation because it's high in protein (and can be high in fat), chicken is the healthiest option when it comes to meat, I've also heard liver is a healthy option as well.
It can make their poops stink so be careful lol
Is oxbow critical care safe to use? It has Timothy Hay meal.
Thanks for making this video! I was one of the ones that asked for it so thanks!

Thanks for the tip on apple seeds. An apple core has always been an interesting treat but she's never gone for the seeds, there's other fresh food around. She's so clever. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your videos are great.
do you have an email or anyway that I could contact you and ask questions besides commenting on youtube? Thanks. x :)
How much would you feed 2 rats ?
Shelley Jones two head portions. So about a handful or two of a salad.

I wish I could get a rat, but my mom barely even let me get a hammy because she says it's a mouse XD
Addison SSO you can't have just one rat or one mouse. they are social animals and will live in misery their entire life
Brooklyn P Well you know what I mean. She won't even let me get ONE, so what's it matter 😆
Brooklyn P actually you can get one mouse! As long as its male. Females are more social and need to have a friend in the cage.
Flawless male mice aren't very common
Brooklyn P what do you mean? they are actually quite common as females..

I read that it's bad for them to eat a bunch of green every day
I thought rats can't have spinach, dried corn, or tofu as well.
Sweet Potato in the baby food? Isn't that a no-no for rats?
When it's cooked it's fine, when raw it'd toxic

Hey I'm really happy for your new addition to the family but you said "a rat" and I would just like to remind you that you need at least two rats to keep each other company! It's so important for them to live a happy life even lab rats have been mandated to have a rat companion in their unit! Please please keep that in mind! Best of luck xoxo ❤️❤️
