Caesar and his Legion: British Veteran Paratrooper in Ukraine

- War. War never changes. Or does it? Who could answer that question better than Andrew Scott, callsign 'Caesar' - an experienced British campaigner who had deployments in Northern Ireland, Iraq, Africa and now in Ukraine, serving as a mortarman of the mortar platoon in the 2nd battalion of the International Legion. At 57 he is a living example that age is just a number if your heart and mind are in the right place. They say 'larger than life' about people like him. We had an exciting conversation about wars, about experience, about culture and history and, of course, about how the old tricks can still play a role in a modern warfare.

I have a question for any legion members, when you get training is there any emphasis on "Improvise, Adapt, Overcome" or "Keep It Simple Stupid"?
I'm asking because there are videos of expensive wheeled robots all over the internet but I haven't seen a single wheelbarrow.
£50,000 experimental robot that probably doesn't work or alternatively £100 gets you a wheelbarrow with a puncture proof ball, allows one man to run with 150kg of weight inside and a few spray paint cans to camo it up.
Wheelbarrows have worked for thousands of years, 500 wheelbarrow will shift a lot more stuff than one robot but nobody seems to be thinking about the really simple solutions to basic problems?

Lots of people crossed The Siegfreid Line in WWII joining Germany after being told that Britons don't like Romans in they're country. I wonder what happened to them (firing squad most likely)?
This veteran is a man who knows what he’s about. Ukraine is lucky to have his experience. good on ya mate
I served with cesar during my time in the international legion. A true and really good friend. Always looking out for others.
You Sir are Outstanding,
Thank you for sharing your story....
I'm from the UK, I am really proud of our military history and good professional Soldiers like you and those you describe..
Keep going Good Sir 👍
Well done film people
What a truly outstanding example of a soldier. These men are why the British army is so revered by other nations military's around the world for their grit, determination, adaptability and their empathy. Such a humble man no that your country loves you as much as you love it and stay as safe as you can. Slava Ukraini.
This guy should be in movies, he looks just like I would imagine a lifetime professional British soldier.
Yeah. He is exactly my idea of "a classic Hollywood cast" for the ol' pro who's seen it all, been everywhere, and never ever quits.
U lot believe anything this dude who says all his accolades gets put in mortar platoon yeah something's not right something smells fishy.
Because he's 57 you mong do you expect too be running around the front @nering_the_end
This man could fire four rounds a minute, in any weather.
@@nearing_the_endyou think a tier 2 is going to lie on a hugely public channel? Paras are a tight knit bunch
You are a genuine HERO!!! Many heartfelt thanks from a USA citizen! PRAYING FOR YOUR SAFETY! NATO, please hurry with the supplies!!!!!!!
"Never underestimate an old man in a profession where people die young".
Hi mate, you can tell by the styling of your beret that you are an old sweat! As we say “once a Para, always a Para”, as an Old 3 Bn Para I greatly respect a mortar man (even if we call them “drop shorts”) just because we have seen them standing in the door before a jump. They had to fall out of the door as their gear was always the heaviest in any stick. Mate, at your age, respect and Mana to you. I thought I did well surviving 20 years of soldiering and now at 86 still going trout fishing this week, but you are an example! Cheers mate. Harera
Thank you for your comment and service. Enjoy your retirement, and I hope you're doing well.
@@paul8161Thanks Paul, I am a lucky man, considering that I have in my lifetime visited 32 countries, worked in 23 of them, learned & forgotten 14 languages and ended up in the hunting and fishing heaven in the South Pacific. The Old Gods have looked after me! Cheers mate. Harera
@pierevojzola9737 it sounds like you have had quite a adventure, have you ever considered writing a book about your life? Just a thought. I'm glad you got out of some dangerous situations safe and made it out. Paul
Total respect to anyone who serves with the International Legion. My son has just returned from the Ukraine after serving for a year. The only reason that he returned is because he got injured. Keep it up lads and get stuck in . Great stream 👍👍👍.

“Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young.” Great to hear his story, a truly noble and competent war fighter and a great asset for Ukraine 🇺🇦✌️
Ukrainians on both sides… dummy
Why beware?
Ukraine are extremely lucky to have foreign veterans from Britian and USA fighting for them because these men have been to hell and back many times and walked through the flames and came out the other side because of their grit and determination and skill.
You mean mercenaries?
In UK he could have jobe with better pay... And go to his family every day after work. That's why I would say he is more valuenter in this case.
And if He would not be valuenter.. What different would it make???

Hail Caeser - stay safe.
Ave, True To Caesar.
ex Mob here mate. 16 years for my sins. Did a stint in Berlin with a Para Bn - welltrained, well motivated, fit as a butcher's dogs, well led and a joy to be around most of the time (for sure there's always a dick 'ead but in the main a lively, cheerful bunch of tearaways who knew how to laugh at themselves as loudly as they laugh at others. Like I said a joy to be around.
Went on for a further 35 years service in government security circles. Duty and service are not dirty words in my vocabulary.
In my 70's and reached the arthritic by date ten years and more back. Had my share of adrenalin moments. Hope you reach that happy state still able to smile, rationalize and look forward to contentment.
Thanks for doing the dirty work those like me can no longer do. Those young lads should feel privileged and secure under your wings (literally). I hope the pampered westerners get to grips with what you're facing in the forward areas and ensure you all get what you need, when you need it. I feel a sense of shame UK does not have units flanking your own (and annoyance at other western nations wanting to do anything to keep themselves out of where they should be stood on this - In Ukraine doing their duty).
Hope you never lose your infectious enthusiasm. I salute you.
What a lovely post, thanks f your comment and service.
I fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam, and I can identify with much of what you say. My beret is off to you for your willingness to fight for what you believe in.
It hurts to hear him say it's heartbreaking they can't give the guys that need it, coverage because they can't shoot like they need to because they don't have the amount of ammunition they need....
The west needs to step up ammo production.
@@DiogenesOfCa they have
I think that was the whole point mate, to use Ukraine as a proxy to fight Russia.
And this is after the U.S. finally approved aid after several months of trump interfering with our government. We finally got the aid approved so there is no excuse for a lack of ammunition.
@@DiogenesOfCa We need to pull all support from Ukraine. It's terrible how we prolong this conflict
The epitome of a humble old soldier. Good man.
Thank you Drew. My Grampa was a Para and fought at Arnhem. Nothing but love and respect for anyone that has earned the Pegasus on their shoulders 🫡🏴❤️

As a resident of the UK, I wish that the situation in Ukraine received more attention. While the UK, like many other countries, expresses support, it often feels like the issue is treated as an afterthought rather than a top priority.
What's your country doing?
What a legend ❗💪🏻
It’s strange but true- I feel so much love for this warrior, whose life is drenched in blood, sweat and tears. He’s a rare rough diamond. Wish he was in my team!!!

Great interview. Respect and best wishes to Caesar ❤. To victory Ukraine! 💙💛
What a god damn disgrace of the Western political leadership - something has to change. Ukraine, Mr. Scott & co should get, should have gotten, all support needed from day one.
I hope this Veteran knows who he helps and knows the history of Volhynia 1943‼️
He might do. Many of us have a passing knowledge of it. Not sure why you feel it should have any impact on this war however. Throughout history one band/group of Europeans have quite routinely invaded/murdered an other group be it for political, military or just land grab purposes. Why should anyone feel Poland would be any different? Do a wiki search on warfare Poland has been involved in and then try to tell me Poland has never had a group of soldiers who have participated in wrongdoing from rapes through to mass murders in all that time in all those wars.
Answering this whilst on holiday in a rented flat in Gdansk. I love Poland, visit regularly and openly admire the way Poland is becoming a regional power once more.
Concentrate on the war in hand because if Ukraine loses this then the future looks a little more fraught for Poland than it currently does with Ukrainians youngster fighting and dying so young Poles don't have to. Be grateful for that at least.
@@Scaleyback317 Poles did not serve fascists🤨
@@Scaleyback317 Poles did not serve in SS units
@@tomaszl2522 Poles throughout history just as soldiers of other nations throughout history have not always served what could be termed, the good team. In a great many wars there was no such thing as the good teams merely degrees of evil. You're either blindly nationalistic which could mean you're a borderline fascist yourself or you're very stupid - maybe even both, you usually do have to be pretty damned stupid to follow an extremist dogma.
Cannot be bothered to argue with you. You either accept this or you don't - I won't lose any sleep over it.
Over half a million Poles served in the German Armed Forces. There would have been a wide variety of reasons for such but serve they did.
By Victory Day in 1945, nearly a third of Polish soldiers in the West had formerly served in the German military.

I think this guy is an example of a warrior philosopher. He has a "heart as big as an ocean." He "cares about people." It is obvious that he has spent his life fighting for the good of humanity rather than medals or money. Keep your head down son.
But what about the ethnic Russians who were systematically persecuted and murdered by the Ukrainian government over decades. Not allowed their own language culture and were labeled as “ orcs” and for what? Are they not allowed to be cared for?
@@gezbo66 you are wrong here. This is not a stand up comedy channel
Just British mate same attitude with the Scots and Welsh
Respect man you are so right what everything you say I've always thought the same we are all human being we should be looking after this planet and all life on it we have the intelligence I to was a soldier.
You're the father we all need. ❤
All the technology in the world won't stop the need for brave men, to cross the last bound and take ground under the point of the bayonet, using fire, manoeuvre, dead ground and courage to clear and hold the ground.
''We've been fighting each other for 50.000 years'' The scary thing Is that we all know it, but we still do it. If you have any doubt In your mind that humanity will destroy ourselves, just think about that.
Reading the comments there are obviously a lot Sov trolls watching this. Well done Legion, well done Caesar, if they're trolling you, you're relevant. His point about map reading should be taken up with training units. Ukraine is using a lot of drones with excellent results but the weather will soon detiorate, drone use for spotting will be impaired and mortar teams must know where to target.
Thank you for your service. 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇧
Absolutely legend
A real life Rogue Trooper
4 weeks is not long enough to make a soldier, but desperate times mean desperate measures, so these brave souls will have to learn quick, I'm the same age as this guy and started my service in the 80's, things were different back then and the blokes were top quality and could be relied on, no matter the circumstances, the weak ones would be weeded out in training, somewhere in the middle of the 90's things started to slacken off and the guys coming up to the battalion were not not up to snuff in fact some of them should have been binned in training, not their fault they made things too easy for the new guys so weak ones slipped through.
Total respect. He is great.
old USArmy 82C/13F here to say...old soldiers have the biggest hearts for Humanity, as this gentleman certainly has. Pity we must waste it on killing each other!! Let the "Leaders" duke it out bare-knuckles if they want to wage war, and leave the rest of us to enjoy what lives we have. Folks, there are wise gentlemen as he, among the Russians, too. Please don't cheer at another's death, for...most had wives, mothers, children, and a future to enjoy. Except for that stinkin' little (or big) bit of metal that snuffs it all out. Let the "Leaders" fight, not the Heroes!! Amen.
Well said 👏.
All very noble and unrealistic, unviable. Perhaps if you were to attempt to convince Tsar Putrid of that you would receive a harsher reply than this. It would amount to a similar message though. I'm still military enough to try to be respectful and polite until somebody decrees it be otherwise.
Good luck with Putrid.
Man this hits hard, I knew we fumbled by our arms deliveries but hearing it from the perspective of a British soldier on the ground is just painful.
I truly do not get it, we should deliver them the weapons they ask for even if it means we have less, after all this means our soldiers do not have to fight, which we are already ill prepared for!
good luck to you and Ukraine.
Thank you Drew!

"For 50,000 years all we have done is effing fight each other" Totally agree with you mate, and, in that 50,000 years have we ever learnt anything from all the senseless carnage we caused each other? nope, we just learnt better and more efficient ways to kill each other, we never learnt how to live peacefully with each other.
I dont think there's a single year in human history..where there wasnt a war or a battle going on.
This was surprisingly very educational and interesting. Stay safe...
Quo Fata Vocant, where fate calls. This should be the tenet of all military, we go where we are needed, without question!
I think the younger generations including my own (I’m 67) have had a pretty easy life compared with the older generations of our parents. This is most likely the reason for the younger generations lack of interest in the military. It’s just a shame that we as a species have NOT learned important lessons from history in particular the last century. We had WW1, Spanish flu global pandemic, the Great Depression, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Ireland, Africa, the Gulf, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, GFC, Sars CoV2/Covid 19 global pandemic, Ukraine and multiple other international conflicts and economic crashes.
Are we going to keep repeating the same mistakes for the next century?
Yes. And we will repeat it again...and again..and again.
Human greed will be the death of us all.
What an impressive guy. Salute!
Great man. Respect.
Bro is a consummate war fighter and a Man of professional adventure. What a life.
He’s a clown, in a circus… WEF NATO minion
Doubt Caesar will ever see this, but wanted to throw my answer in to his 'Young people don't want to fight' confusion. I'm 26 for context.
My dad is ex-military (REME), and my family has a long history of veterns going back to the 1800s (maybe more)- My Great Grandad was also a tanker in North Aftica.
I originally wanted to serve myself as an officer, but ended up choosing Uni instead. I love this countries history, even if we have some *very* dark stains on it, but I won't fight unless Blightly herself is threatened. Why? Because whilst, I love my country- it has been taken from me by greedy Etonians in Parliment who have sold us out in the name of neo-liberalism and 'capital'.
I will likely never own a house, despite working since I was 14.
I will likely never have a government pension despite paying into it for the last 8 years.
The NHS is gutted.
The Miltary is gutted.
Public Services and transport are gutted.
Community centres are gone.
Corruption in government is rampant.
Food bank usage has increased over 100X in the last 10 years or so.
Why would I ever fight and die for a country that has taken everything from me? The kids of Sunak, Cameron, Starmer etc will never fight- why should I die for corporate interests?
I help the Ukies as I can- buying them drones and medical supplies, but until I can believe in this country again- I will never fight for it on foreign soil. Nothing but respect for Caesar, the Ukrianains and all those who have taken up arms to defend against imperialism.
So you still aid a proxy of neo liberalism. How does that make sense?
As a veteran, I hear you and agree with your points. I too see the government for what it is and refuse to give my consent to them to rule over me. I can't get a mortgage due to being self employed and considered a risk even though I have never defaulted on a single rent payment in over 25 years. My family has to live in a damp and mouldy house that I have to battle with the landlord to maintain in a fit state for habitation, I can't have a dog, even though as an ex military working dog handler would help my PTSD massively due to renting restrictions. I loathe the loss of life that the politicians have responsibility for whilst not having to get their own or their families hands dirty, and would never take up arms again or encourage anyone else to unless it was to defend my home. I understand why young men such as yourself feel the way you do, but would urge you to remain fit and strong and train yourself in as many skills that will stand you in good stead for a civil upheaval of the likes we have not seen for an age, there are dark times ahead as certain plans unfold towards 2030. Be as self sufficient and independent as you can be from the system. Beware the man who talks peace with a gun at his side.
Best comment here. I salute you. Though don’t support Ukraine at all..
For all your grievences, why did you not mention the mass immigration, which is destroying Britain, while your generation say nothing.
