This deck was very well made and fun to play right out of the box, and because of the way it was built it did give several avenues to choose from if you wanted to modify it, zombie/demon tribal,life drain effects, voltron. its great, and very much worth buying.
This was very helpful for strengthening my first Commander deck. ^^ Now I know what cards are good for my deck and how they can help me out! Thank you very much! I was thinking about having one addition to the deck be either Ashling, the Extinguisher and/or Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon. I know they're both not demons or zombies, but Ashling does help get rid of pesky big creatures, and Skithiryx... will definitely help make your opponent rack up those Poison Counters. It's a dirty plan, but it's what Black Mana does! This is going in my favorites!
I'm just starting out with EDH and going to pick up one of these sets. I like the feel of Sworn to Darkness but I'm a green player at heart AND the white set looks insane as well!! The choices are too much.
Chris Yodonis Green, Black, and White and are all great. I think the Green or Black deck may be the most new player friendly, but they're all super awesome.
+Akillies Wolfinstine don't forget the xathrid necromancers. and although it wouldn't be mono black anymore, adding Athreos would add to that combo giving you an almost unstoppable board control. it would basically force your opponent to concede before taking a major beating straight to the face
When you mentioned the lack of tutor cards, I had noticed that too when I saw the decklist so I've got a few cards that will potentially fix that problem (Liliana [Dark Realms/Vess]), Blood Speaker (search for demons), Rune-Scarred Demon, Diabolic Tutor, lots of good stuff to make this more demon-centered, but I will know what to put in and what to take out once I get this deck tomorrow :).
Picked up Sworn to Darkness, got Lashwrithe out and Ob Nyxilis emblem out and went to town drawing cards and gaining life, I won the game with 21 cards in my library in the by bringing back Gary for 12 points of damage, creating a 5/5 demon, giving it swiftboots for haste and flying in for lethal on the last player!
if you are going to use the black deck I recomend using gisa as a commander. use her with any big creatures like demon of wailing agonies and get 6 2/2 zombies for a tapped commander and 6 mana total. use her with grave titan for at LEAST 8 2/2 zombies total for another tapped commander and 7 mana (I say at least because you can attack with him two if you want). Any card with 5 power or higher is just guaranteed tet you some value when you sac it. the last thing i want to say is pair it with ob nixilis to get 5 2/2 zombies for just 2 life
I've been using Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief as my commander. She's silly with just the base deck's mana ramp. When I have some extra money Cabal Coffers is going to make her even more silly.
I went full-on demons with mine. Put Sheoldred as my commander and added basically every demon I could find, as well as a Dictate of Erebos and Grave Pact so that removing my creatures becomes a painful prospect for everyone at the table. Also, Liliana and Living Death become game breaking when everyone has been sacrificing their creatures the whole game. With a few minor modifications this is easily the most powerful of the 2014 decks.
I really like the black deck. A lot of people are complaining about OB but in truth its a great planeswalker especially with his demon generating abilities. However there are a few creatures that I would pull out for creatures like Nightmare. Plus the deck needs more tutoring but since I'm on a budget I'll settle for cheaper cards like Diabolic Tutor or Liliana.

Some let you destroy creatures, draw cards, create tokens, mill, they do it all. The new demon with Lieutenant is gonna be rad too! Strategy: Make tons of black mana, summon gigantic beatsticks with wings and smash face. Simple as that...

Anyway, I was wondering what cards I should replace if I want to play diabolic tutor(have one lying around) also thinking about Bone splinters since it might fit the theme of morbid stuff. Thoughts oh Wedge senpai? (I've never played commander, so i dont know whats good)
I want to use Gisa in a deck, I love Innistrad, its flavour and her and her brother. I was thinking maybe some sort of Zombie Tribal with a Milling sub theme/backup with Phenax as the Commander, since Geralf mills everyone to make a big Zombie which thanks to Phenax could mill for a lot, then if it would die I could use Gisa to make many smaller zombies who can all mill for 2 each turn and sac them to Gisa etc again if they would die. Also, with Altar of the Brood it would mean every Zombie the siblings make can mill everybody else while gaining board presence and using the usual Zombie/Blue/Black goodies... This is my first idea for a Commander deck, any thoughts on it?
James Knight I think this is a great place to start. Phenax is hilarious as a card and will assuredly cause some headaches. Deck sizes are much bigger in Commander, but you can still do some annoying things.
TheManaSource Thanks, the Milling is sort of the back up plan as the deck would still be Zombie Tribal heavy, but in true Phenax style there will be deception, as you wouldn't see Phenax as the Commander and assume its a Zombie deck. And if nothing else, Gisa and Geralf can mill for 4 cards each...or just let me smack heads with either a swarm of 'bear' zombies or some rather big dumb brutes lol Also thanks to Phenax the Zombies would have more then one way to eat some brains :P Any other cards you would recommend for the deck?
How does one buy the singles you need for decks when Wizards constantly puts out such insane product? I've been wanting to get the shocklands for my Commander deck but at the same time these decks are just so fun to play as is and you get so many cards to play around with. I don't understand how a person can do it!
As someone who has never played commander before and is fairly new to magic in general, would you recommend this or the new white deck? I'm torn between the two and am currently not willing to spend the money for both, so which is likely the easier to play?
My question is, can you make a deck with cards from different magic series? Like some cards from journey into NYx with some cards from born of the gods

Using toymaker (or any other card that turns artifacts into creatures) and liquidmetal coating, planeswalker commanders can win using commander damage. Now I want to stick Nahiri's ultimate Blade on her and swing in for huge commander damage.
You can do that for much less work using a Voltron strategy. I'm just saying that relying on turning a planeswalker commander into an artifact creature ti swing for a commander win is very impractical.
Liquidmetal coating lets you kill your opponents lands by turning them into artifacts then turning them into creatures. Also, it's more of the fact that no one is going to expect you to win with commander damage with a walker commander.
A problem I have with all these commander deck that have been released is they are usually taking 2-3 elements and just mashing it together. like I feel these are very unplayable decks right out the box because they are catering to multiple game plans. This year has done alot better but I still get that felling. White weenie equipment? Blue deck with little control cards? By far the best deck is the Red deck not just for the money cards but it has the most concise strategy revolving around artifact and artifact recursion with ALL 3 commanders fitting into the deck very well. Last year was worse though the Mind seize trying to build for 2 conflicting commanders of Jeleva and Nekusar. Eternal bargain life gain artifcats?, Evasive maneuvers tapping and flicker? Next year if they keep improving maybe they will make the deck more concise giving us more power cards for the strategy the decks are being made for making it easier to build off.

The black deck for example gives you the option of going demon reanimator or zombie token route while still giving you money cards like Malicious Affliction and Grave Titan. Either way, the lack of tutors in the deck means that they're leaving it to the player on how he/she will build the deck.

I feel like trying to mix multiple deck types they miss these opportunities.

Does "copy" on Malicious Affliction means you copy a spell and can retrigger meaninig it is basically a board wipe ? Because it is a copy effect so you copy whole spell not only destroy. ? (if not state reasoninig pl0x)
The copy effect triggers when you cast Malicious Affliction, if a spell is copied it is placed on the stack without being cast, thus the copy effect will never trigger from the copy.
I love this deck. It has room for budget improvements, but what deck doesn't? Soul of Innistrad is a great $2 rare that works perfectly with this deck. Dictate of Erebos is another budget addition at around fifty cents compare to the $8 Grave Pact (or both if you have them). Outside of budget, Æther Snap & Vampire Hexmage are just begging you to play Dark Depths. Hex parasite would be another good inclusion as a cheap way to answer opposing planeswalkers.
I've put quite a bit of money into it with cards like sheoldred demonic tutor and batterskull and the deck becomes amazing but there are budget cards like praetors grasp that can upgrade the deck
Mike L My only problem with the deck is how slow it is out of the box. It doesn't really get going until turn 5. If you lay the deck out on the table by casting cost, it is very top heavy. I don't like sitting around for 4 turns doing nothing but playing lands and saying go (and hoping I get to a 5th and 6th land eventually just so I can start playing)
Mike L Also, this deck comes with Æther Snap and Vampire Hexmage. I was thinking of adding Dark Depths. It isn't budget, but feels like it belongs in this deck. I am thinking of adding Hex Parasite because it is good against a lot of cards in addition to cutting the cost of Dark Depths by two thirds. Finally, Nim Deathmantle is a budget card that let's you get your creatures back after sacrificing them for value by paying 4 colorless.
Mike L Yes it is pretty obvious that WotC didn't want players to be able to minus the Planeswalker commander's abilities to 0, then recasting them from the command zone to use them again. That's why Ob has 3 loyalty counters but +2 and -2 to activate leaving it with 1 counter.
The hybrid mana symbol in the extort ability means you pay B or W, so in a mono-black deck, all you're doing is paying B to use the ability so it's acceptable in the deck.

I own this deck and think its fantastic straight out of the box but needs more zombies? I think if most of the creatures were zombies instead of Demons zombie apocalypse would be a hame changer but thats just me.
If they replaced Abyssal Persecutor with Demon of deaths gate it would have made more sense what with life gain lose and sacrifice but you can't wish for everything.
I'm torn between red and black deck. I like black because it would be a good starting point for a zombie deck while red has a very good value cards and good synergies. Could someone help me? Wedge? Anyone?
Severi Syrjälä If you're new to Magic, black is going to be a lot easier to play, but if you've been playing for awhile and love synergy, red is where you wanna be!
add all 3 of the ob nixilis cards with liliana of the dark realms endless ranks of the dead and army of the damed and waste not its a really good stradtgy because lilana gets mana out for you plus flash back and multiple of zombies is unstopbul even if destroyed ranks of the damed will still help all zombie tokens double
***** You will NEVER Ultimate Ob Nixilis. And all of his Abilities EXCEPT for his Ultimate, suck. What's the point of a Commander, that cannot Attack, with a Target on his back, and has no Abilities that can ever be feasibly use except in Magical Christmas Land? A 1/1 Zombie would make a better Commander..
***** Terrible at Magic? Anyone who thinks a Planeswalker can be a good Commander, is who is terrible at Magic. In a 4-Player Game, where there are 3 Turns for people to Attack your Commander before you can + their Loyalty again, makes it so that unless the Board State is pretty stalled out, a Planeswalker Commander will die almost instantly. Unlike normal Commanders, Planeswalker ones CAN be singled out and killed, very easily, in combat. Good luck getting that Loyalty high enough to Ultimate; the closer you get, the bigger the Target on your Commander becomes. Some of the other Walker Commanders in C14 have good +'s, and thus can be good, even with a Target on their back. Some can even sneak an Ultimate in because it is less threatening, or easy to reach. Ob Nixilis isn't one of those. His + is useless, his - is okay, and his Ultimate requires you to not use his - and pray it gets there. I see no reason to run Ob Nixilis as a Commander, over any other Black Commander at your disposal. He provides nearly nothing, dies easily, and even if you do Ultimate him, it's not an instant win.

Sheoldred, Mikeaus the Unhallowed, Barter in Blood work really well. Rise from the Grave goes perfect also, especially after Necromantic Selection.

A 5/5 for five isn't that good for a commander.
For a Planeswalker commander it sure is. Especially one that makes herself a 10/10 Double strike through her ultimate.

I love this deck. It has room for budget improvements, but what deck doesn't? Soul of Innistrad is a great $2 rare that works perfectly with this deck. Dictate of Erebos is another budget addition at around fifty cents compare to the $8 Grave Pact (or both if you have them). Outside of budget, Æther Snap & Vampire Hexmage are just begging you to play Dark Depths. Hex parasite would be another good inclusion as a cheap way to answer opposing planeswalkers.
I've put quite a bit of money into it with cards like sheoldred demonic tutor and batterskull and the deck becomes amazing but there are budget cards like praetors grasp that can upgrade the deck

Agreed. For example, unlike Lord of the Pit, Xathrid Demon gives you value for the sacrificed creature.

My only problem with the deck is how slow it is out of the box. It doesn't really get going until turn 5. If you lay the deck out on the table by casting cost, it is very top heavy. I don't like sitting around for 4 turns doing nothing but playing lands and saying go (and hoping I get to a 5th and 6th land eventually just so I can start playing)

Also, this deck comes with Æther Snap and Vampire Hexmage. I was thinking of adding Dark Depths. It isn't budget, but feels like it belongs in this deck. I am thinking of adding Hex Parasite because it is good against a lot of cards in addition to cutting the cost of Dark Depths by two thirds. Finally, Nim Deathmantle is a budget card that let's you get your creatures back after sacrificing them for value by paying 4 colorless.

Yes it is pretty obvious that WotC didn't want players to be able to minus the Planeswalker commander's abilities to 0, then recasting them from the command zone to use them again. That's why Ob has 3 loyalty counters but +2 and -2 to activate leaving it with 1 counter.

Wait, how can you play Crypt Ghast when the Extort ability has White in it? Or does that not count for some reason?
The hybrid mana symbol in the extort ability means you pay B or W, so in a mono-black deck, all you're doing is paying B to use the ability so it's acceptable in the deck.

I own this deck and think its fantastic straight out of the box but needs more zombies? I think if most of the creatures were zombies instead of Demons zombie apocalypse would be a hame changer but thats just me.
If they replaced Abyssal Persecutor with Demon of deaths gate it would have made more sense what with life gain lose and sacrifice but you can't wish for everything.

Severi Syrjälä If you're new to Magic, black is going to be a lot easier to play, but if you've been playing for awhile and love synergy, red is where you wanna be!

add all 3 of the ob nixilis cards with liliana of the dark realms endless ranks of the dead and army of the damed and waste not its a really good stradtgy because lilana gets mana out for you plus flash back and multiple of zombies is unstopbul even if destroyed ranks of the damed will still help all zombie tokens double

I think it is a very solid Pre-Con, but Ob Nixilis downright sucks as a Commander. Use Gisa, she is way, WAY, better.

What's the point of a Commander, that cannot Attack, with a Target on his back, and has no Abilities that can ever be feasibly use except in Magical Christmas Land? A 1/1 Zombie would make a better Commander..
***** Terrible at Magic? Anyone who thinks a Planeswalker can be a good Commander, is who is terrible at Magic. In a 4-Player Game, where there are 3 Turns for people to Attack your Commander before you can + their Loyalty again, makes it so that unless the Board State is pretty stalled out, a Planeswalker Commander will die almost instantly. Unlike normal Commanders, Planeswalker ones CAN be singled out and killed, very easily, in combat. Good luck getting that Loyalty high enough to Ultimate; the closer you get, the bigger the Target on your Commander becomes.
Some of the other Walker Commanders in C14 have good +'s, and thus can be good, even with a Target on their back. Some can even sneak an Ultimate in because it is less threatening, or easy to reach. Ob Nixilis isn't one of those. His + is useless, his - is okay, and his Ultimate requires you to not use his - and pray it gets there. I see no reason to run Ob Nixilis as a Commander, over any other Black Commander at your disposal. He provides nearly nothing, dies easily, and even if you do Ultimate him, it's not an instant win.
