Hello and welcome back to the channel. I am your host and friendly neighborhood BLACK mage. In my last video I got to talk about my favorite color in Magic. But now it is time to talk about what I think is the most powerful color in Magic, Black. Black has the advantage of using its life total as a resource, and in Commander we get double the starting life to pay into sweet effects. On top of being the only color that really utilizes our life total we get really powerful kill spells, reanimation, and game enders.

Wanted to chime in on Living Death, it actually doesn’t exile what’s on the board, it causes all players to sacrifice! Pretty useful when you’re looking to get some death triggers (: favorite spell of all time for me🖤

Thank you very much! Knowing what all of the color combos "like" to do makes deck building so much easier. When you keep in mind what the color combination is trying to do, your deck building becomes easier and your games become more fun when you are not trying to force a playstyle outside of your color identity.
I had to scroll a bit while looking for mono black videos to find this but this video is excellent.
Been playing mono-black since 2014, in all formats I´ve played. So of course I agree with this video.
I am slowly becoming a black player the more and more I see how versatile the color is in almost every situation.
Ooh I do also love Toshi but my mono black commander is currently Sheoldred the Apocalypse. 😊🖤

As I was making my scripts for these videos I sort of ranked them by my opinion of their strength in EDH. Blue is my favorite color, but I personally think Black and Green battle for the strongest color. Green will definitely be next 👀
I've been playing my suicide black edh build led by Maga Traitor to Mortals for 6+ years. So many powerful options swap into the commander zone vs more powerful pods. But the decks power isn't thr commander . It's great to have multiple overlapping opportunities to win out of no where. Resources & Resolve

Syr Konrad The Grim is my ultimate step into mono B for right now. It feels the most like I'm a necromancer in terms of gameplay while still not being a "casual" or "theme" deck. For spikes that still like the fantasy aspect of the game, it's honestly perfect.
The fantasy and imagination is so important to me as well. I love thinking of my commander, the spells in the deck, and myself when constructing a Magic deck that make me feel like a powerful mage using / casting the spells im playing. Syr Konrad is always a banger in my Muldrotha deck!
My favorite card in all of magic is the Nightmare. It has flying, and it's power and toughness are equal to the number of swamps you control.
As a generally good natured person I find it a bit difficult to really go 'full black' but I am working on finding a way. This video was very helpful and enjoyable because it had several helpful suggestions of useful cards and strategies to use in battle.

My first deck was a black deck. It will always have a special place with me.
I'm strongly considering building K'rrik, Son Of Yawgmoth or Syr Konrad, The Grimn. Both look like busted mono black commanders that I'm so excited to play! I want one for fun and one for cEDH, what do you recommend?
I play a momo black Zombie legacy deck ( Onslaught) and a mono black Makaeus the Unhallowed Commanderdeck. They aer good in Synergy and some Tactics to handle.

I'm about to build him! I'm so excited, I got him in the Commander 2019 precon and he's BUSTED, but he definitely belongs as his own commander more than a 99 card in a random other deck.

Ah the Sahdowborn Apostle deck. I have a friend who plays a Cleric Shadowborn deck. It is VERY consistent.
Well all of my decks are Mono Black ( Syr Konrad, Horobi and Toshiro Umezawa) and will never change to other color.

I like mono black decks, and for commander one of the best commander is yawgmoth, thran physician and his son.
Yawgmoth and K'rrick are insane. Mono black brings alot of value and those commanders just go nuts in every way and need to be answered immediately.
Did you really recommend Blightsoil Druid for Mono B? That just doesn't work
Yes, you are correct. While looking for mana dorks for this video when I came across blightsoild druid I tried looking it up on the Gatherer and typed in "not green" to the advanced search and Blightsoil came up. But after some further research you cannot have a green mana producing creature in a mono black list.

My mono black deck started in 1995 and my mother found it now it’s being updated for modern times from EDH to now commander
You have to tell us who the commander was and who it is now! That is so awesome. I am glad that it stood the test of time.
Lol, this reminded me of when 20 years ago my mother found some of my bags and boxes full of common and uncommon cards. Not so good ones thankfully. She burned them all :D She thought it was gambling cards as I was spending all my money on them. Oh I wish she knew how correct she was :D
You didn't talk about discard effects. Forcing your opponents to dump their hand and top-deck is probably the most detrimental thing you can do in any game - even more-so than any counterspell.

Darkness won my team an Archenemy tournament. Nobody saw it coming.
Cards like Sign in Blood double as direct damage to finish a game.
Vesuva and Thespian Stage and Deserted Temple can serve as additional Coffers.
Disciple of Bolas is highly underrated, as you can pop other creatures you want to pop, like Kokusho or Havoc Demon, and get big bonuses for it.
If you couldn't tell, I play mono-black... A lot. There are so many ways to play black, while all the other colors mostly do just one thing.
Phage, the Untouchable is my commander. I've actually had to reign in on the power of my deck a bit.
I have a black deck that ramps mana as fast as green decks.
I also have a deck that uses cards like Bloodghast, Gravecrawler, and Rotting Rats where the creatures just keep coming back, overwhelming my opponent's defenses.
not gonna lie, black being my least favorite color in mtg i never really delved into what it does in depth, but it has been a very interesting experience building my Tergrid deck, looking up and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of black to build for one of the saltiest commanders ever

kriik is busted - fun to go off with peer and aetherflux but people kill him instantly. now I'm switching to gix to try and pay his ability and play 20 cards from my opponent lets see how it goes. the rest of the deck will be zombie tribal just for fun

made a massacvre girl edh deck. its pretty nice to have a boardwipe in the commandzone because it merely threatening whatever my opponents play slows the game down from 2023 turbocrack edh to 2017 1h+ edh games. and in addition there are some suprising interesting wincons for the deck: creatures that get +1/+1 counters whenever something dies, letting them outlast the boardwipe, and swing in for *huge* damage after the dust settles! i use loads of sacc outlets and ressurrect effects to repeat massacre girl's effect while also dodging commander tax.
sometimes its better to let her live though, because she is the ultimate blocker too, the other players dont want her dead, and as a result rarely attack me while she is on the field.
also the ressurect effects ensure i can get my wincons back after one of the 30/30 fliers inevitably eats a frogify

I agree that putting essentials in the command zone is extremally powerful like ramp and card draw but it is very rare to have a board wipe in the Zone! And in this day and age with everyone playing small value creatures or making tokens, I bet Massacre Girl always manages to get some huge hits whenever you cast her.

should probs also note that there isnt much token generation because 1. its more unique and 2. you dont need much of your own input into "nuclear bomb girl" to split enough atoms to get the chain reaction chugging along, so id rather be able to ressurect my death fodder and/or have them do something usefull on etb

My mono black deck is actually a Voltron deck designed around The Haunt of Hightower, which focuses on making your opponents mill and discard cards to rapidly accumulate +1/+1 counters in order to swing for a lethal dose of flying, lifelink damage.

Green brings ALOT to the table, but I love pairing it with other colors to get access to ramp AND THEN playing big bombs in other colors.

No, not the classic ramp. But I counted it as "ramp" as it gets a land to your hand. That may be my fault as when I am deckbuilding I tend to group up true ramp and lands to hand as ramp.
As for the other "multiple, basic, errors" throughout the video. Could you name a few? I would love to know what you thought was wrong with the video.

Mono black are my favorite decks to build, i currently have marrow-gnawer, tergrid, and massacre girl known killer :)
So how's the experience with Tergrid? I was forced to dismantle her due to the salt of my fellow players whenever i bring her to play
@syntaxerror2409 I have a specific group that I can play her with, if anyone else hops in the pod iswitch her for another deck

@syntaxerror2409 yeah, my mom built a duskana at the same time I built the newer massacre girl. We came to a quick agreement that we don't play her and duskana together
