This may be an old video at this point but to this day (28 Sept 2017) it's still helping people. I'm one of them. Just want to say thank you very much. Liam in Ireland
Thank you Alec. Still 7 years after you published this video you enabled me to thoroughly clean my Dyson DC08 without ruining it while doing so. Especially the info on what to clean with or without water or how to dry prevented me from 'disaster'. Thank again and hope all is well down under.
I just rented a furnished flat that had a DC08 in it. I doubt anyone has ever cleaned it since it had been purchased. Your video helped me - it was a perfect instruction. Thank you very much.
you are the man! me mrs was doing my sweed in about the dyson packing in as it kept making a sound like a dump valve once you turned it on. so it started up and then a second later the second noise would begin ... nonetheless i changed the exahust washer as advised by dyson... but had no joy , thereafter i did the aforementioned as in the video above .. and hey presto. its back to like new by the grace of god.. ive had it nearly six years and find this is the best model by far as i got freinds with later models which are constantly giving them problems... once again thanks for the advice... priceless... saved me a £125 on a service charge call out from dyson!!
I have an Eight year old DC08 UK, My air bleed valve was cutting in every time I used my vacuum. Manifold completely blocked. Followed your instructions and bingo! Like new a new machine. Thank You so much!
Hi Alec, Thanks for this fantastic video. I pulled my Dyson DC08 apart yesterday and cleaned it as you showed. I could not have done it without your very clear and thoughtful video: I would never have found the screws for a start! I also pulled apart the turbine head and cleaned it: it was chock full of hair (we have dogs inside). The vac now runs like it was new. Thanks again, Alfred
I found a couple of these machines on the street as trash, these are actually very robust for a Dyson product. They were working but with very low pressure, thanks to this video they are like new again. Thanks a bunch! Still useful in 2018
Thank you so much... your instructions were very clear and despite my husband's dire prediction, I *did* get the machine together again and it works better than ever.
Thanks for a very informative video. Without it I would not have been able to restore my Dyson,s suction. It was so badly clogged I would not have been able to locate the screws without your help. I was just about to go out to buy a new Vacuum cleaner. You have saved a pensioner a lot of money.
Brilliant demonstration on how clean out the DC08, mine works a treat after following your instructions. Another UK viewer who's saved a few quid! Thanks mate.
I've used this video twice now to clean my old vacuum. Exactly what i needed to rid my Dyson of those stinky dog smells that won't go through washing filters alone. Thank you so much!
Thank you kindly. Saved me having to ship this off to the one and only Dyson service centre in Sydney. Good to know you are the man to go to for spare parts for the Dyson as well. Thanks again.
Cheers Alec I've given my DC08 some new pizazz with your excellent guide. I liked the bit about your visitors and your cleaning brush - that made me chuckle and I also like your intelligent slot finding screws that you just throw in and they find their way home. They are like tiny drones. All the best from London
Used this informative guide to clean out my DC08 in addition to replacing both filters for a little less than £10. Works a treat and saves spending another £200+ on another Dyson!!! Thank you!
i have used this video every time i service my unit. each time i have to watch it again and again... brilliant instruction and an absolute nesesity to take this trick-box apart. thanks a mill mate!
With the help of your vids I managed to clean and change the motor in my DC08, thanks! Worth mentioning the white manifold piece is in two parts. You can gentle pull it apart, working around the edge towards the centre, gently unclipping it. There's a tricky triangular bit (you'll know when you see it) where you may need a needle or something to wedge it apart to avoid breaking it. Much easier to clean when it's in two parts. Mine looks like your brand new piece :)
Thank you so much. I've had my Dyson about 6 years and even with a freshly cleaned filter it was smelling of old dog whenever i used it due to dust build up. Your instructions were so clear and easy to follow that even i (a woman) managed to do this! You're a star - thanks so much for this video :-)
Unbelievable, one of the most helpful video's I have seen,... you saved me a new Dyson,..! And you spare me the next discussion with my cleaner,... about the suction of the vacuum cleaner! Thanks so much for sharing it so clearly!!!!
Thanks so much for this video.. My dyson was obviously in desperate need of a thorough clean, I followed your instructions yesterday and today it feels like it's going to suck the carpet off the floor! Cheers :)
Hi Alec! Thanks so much for this video. The steps worked fine for my 12-year-old DC08 and I was amazed at how bunged up the manifold was. I managed to use a CR-V 2.5 hex-allen type screw head to release all the screws.
Also just a wee helpful hint on the squeeze and pull removal of the funnel. I couldn’t manage it with my hands, so I put the unit on the floor and gently applied weight with my foot, while pulling away, worked like a dream!
LOL Robin computers are both the love of my life and the bane of my existence. I know enough to be able to build one and do upgrades but no matter how new or fast mine is it always has issues. You really don't want me to give you any computer advice :)
thanks for this! Have stripped down every other part of my DC08 over the years, have never figured out how to get into this bit before - it's now as good as new :D
HI Alec, great video. I just purchased a dc39 animal plus and was wondering if you have a video to take apart and clean the canister. I'm not in a rush since the vac is new. but would like to have the knowledge when the time comes. Thanks again.
having major difficulty removing handle off assembly, stuck half way now, wont budge forward or backwards. if i try and remove it seems like it will break. is it this tough the first removal, like an unbroken seal or something? thanks
Excellent video, still useful !! Do you know if the gasket at 5:23 is still available? The only one I can see online is the rounded one Thanks in advance
Hi Alec, Just starting but can’t remove the funnel am feeling there must be a knack. Could you try another way to paint a picture of what you mean please. My ability to pull and twist has worn out over the years. Would the application of some tool help...Thanks in advance, Di
While taking my DC08 apart I discovered a little tube that runs from a triangular hole under the top filter cover down to the cable retractor spring. I assume this is for oiling the spring without taking it apart. Nice idea Mr. Dyson.
Perfect, just what I was looking for :0) I don't think I would ever have thought the funnel bit would just pull out...many thanks for the nice clear instructions.
Super super video! Thank you so much. Easy to follow and those little tips really helped. Our cleaner is spotless and hopefully will now be more efficient. You are a star?
Thanks for the tutorial, could you please upload one on how to adjust the cord retraction as mine and my friends main cord's don't retract completely when button is pressed.
I haven't done a DC23 for a while but from memory it is similar however most of the newer ones can be simply washed as they use a rubber gasket. Also the manifold has been revised / removed in later models and seems not to get blocked.
awesome video Alex, just wondering if you could please do another tutorial video but on the DC19, Mine has lost almost total suction, and the filters are brand new, l'm possitive something is traped inside, but I don't feel confident enough to pull it apart without watching you do it first, thanks..
Cheers Alec - just replaced the motor using your other video and then saw this video, so followed this, replaced the filters as well and now have practically a brand new vac once more for very little outlay. Do you know anything about computers, mine is running very slow! LOL!
It makes a big difference if it hasn't been done before. You will normally find it starts to get blocked when the filter wears out because the air isn't flowing through as quick. Check your filter if it is more than a couple years old your vacuum will love you if it gets a new one.
Hi, perfect vidéo that s exactly What i was looking for in Order to wash my cyclone( after 7 years and 3 dogs at home it need it. Question : i think it s possible to open the manifold in Order to wash it ( If not it is hard to Go in each hole) but i m not sure it Will be possible to close it after. Do you know If it s possible without dammage ? Did you try ? Thanks !
Hi Annie, The screwdriver I am using is a called a torx driver I think the one for this is size 15. You should be able to get one from any hardware store. Dont get one with different heads that you can swap because the 'knuckle' wont go down into the hole. You are best to get a medium blade length like 15-25cm long.
Hiya. My white plastic cyclone manifold looks a little different from yours. Instead of the fluted holes, mine has a central tear drop shaped plastic piece in six of the holes. Four of them had hairs tangled on them that blocked the hole. At first I thought maybe they were bits of plastic that should have been removed in manufacture but now I'm not so sure. Why have them in only half the holes? Thanks for a very helpful video. I would have spent ages working out how to get it apart without your video.
Great video, i'm sorry i have not found this one before. My Dyson DC08 has died last week. Now i bougth a Dyson DC29. Can you make a video how to clean the dustcontainer? Simon
Hello. I have a broken cable at the base of the coil vacuum dyson 29 Al floor. do not tell me how to disassemble the coil, to re-wiring the cable? thank.
Hi, where can you get the gasket from? We've had our dyson for over ten years and I think over time due to the heat generated the gasket has warped and doesn't sit flush on the manifold. Is there a part number for it? Thanks
I guess you are right the funny thing is whilst I can fix any vacuum out there I dont conceptually understand a lot of the electronics and such in machines. The dyson is actually a pretty simple design but unfortunately I did not think of it so good on Mr Dyson. They dont cost much to make butthe thing is it mostly works excellent. The exception is certainly in areas where the is lost of very fine dust it puts too much pressure on the filter.
HI Kevin, I would love to, the only issue is I have to wait for one to randomly come in for repair and I can just never predict what is coming - as soon as i see one I will.
This is great. I sent my dyson DC22 for a service, only to find that all they did was soak the whole barrel in water, dry it and give it back, cost me $60 (Sing) for the privaledge!. I went out and bought myself a T15 screwdriver, but I can only find 1 screw on the side, which does not allow me into the thing! Ive tried popping the bottom, like you do in this video, but it doesnt want to come off. PLEASE HELP
I will certainly do a video on teh DC39 as soon as I get one in for repair. I have to wait and see what comes through he door to be able to do the videos.
@dreaddog It is just as easy although there are more screws and it is less likely to get blockages compared with the dc08. Just keep a clean work area and organise your screws neatly you will have no problems.
Many thanks. Still after doing it I notice succession loss in the connection between the radix and handle (esp. when holding up the DC08 while cleaning staircase, a gap between the handle and the radix appeared). On cleaning the yellow part pre-motor filter, with a compressor ( TIP use a wheel air compression at a tank station ) - this gap disappeared => change filter
@sootie40 Hi Sootie, I haven't actually had a dc22 in for repair for some time so I am going from memory. I think you have to go in from the top. There should be 2 screws holding the handle down remove those the lift the handle up at the same time as sliding it forward. From there you can access another screw and you should be able to find the rest pretty easily. If this doesn't seem right send me a picture of the top and bottom of the assembly. I will do my best to answer you asap. Regards Alec

i've just completely stripped my DC08 Animal, and cleaned and washed it all. Just waiting for the new motor to arrive - then rebuild with new filters. It should be like a new hoover when im done...I'll let you know! :-)

Thanks Alex. Very useful video. I own a Dyson DC08 for the last seven years and hope this video will be very useful in the future. All the best.
Just coming back on here again after a few years to say another huge thank you to you for this hugely helpful video! 😊🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
With the help of your vids I managed to clean and change the motor in my DC08, thanks!

Great video thank you for showing, is this the same method for dc19 ?
Very happy to hear your kind words, Glad you got it all sorted.
Thank you for putting this on the net. You just saved me a couple of hundred pounds. Great tutorial.

Thanks buddy for your easy the easy to follow instructions. No need to buy a new vacuum cleaner : )
Thank you! I was just about to get rid of the old dyson, but now its working again. I'd almost forgotten what colour the carpet in the bedroom was.
Thanks heaps Alec. This was really clear and meant my dyson is running like new again
And me again. I’m sure l would manage without this video, but it is invaluable as a double-check. Many thanks again 👍
Thank you for this video. My dyson is clean and runs perfectly again. Perfect video

Are you able to show us how to replace the lower duct hose on a contact head for the Dyson DC08

Great video, i'm sorry i have not found this one before.
My Dyson DC08 has died last week.
Now i bougth a Dyson DC29.
Can you make a video how to clean the dustcontainer?
Simon
Thank you a lot; It allowed me to save my vacuum cleaner !
Great video, but any chance you could do a similar one for the DC26 City? It seems to come apart slightly differently, sadly......
Great video, I followed these instructions no problem to clean my UK version of this Dyson.
Thank you for a greaT TUT JUST WHAT i NEEDED TO FIX AN OLD PERSONS VAC :)
Excellent instructions with clear video explanations. Thank you for the stepwise guide.
Thank you so much Alec ... mine is working like new again .. I really appreciate the help
Hello. I have a broken cable at the base of the coil vacuum dyson 29 Al floor. do not tell me how to disassemble the coil, to re-wiring the cable? thank.
Sometimes the change is really amazing :) Happy Vacuuming!
Still useful. Still a brilliant video. Saved me buying a new Hoover.
I would love to do one for the DC26 but it's kind of random what comes through the door for repairs. If I get one I assure you I will video it.
Hi, where can you get the gasket from? We've had our dyson for over ten years and I think over time due to the heat generated the gasket has warped and doesn't sit flush on the manifold. Is there a part number for it?

Thats so great,
I do get asked if the UK is the same style as Aus and now I know.
Thanks

Could you do a tutorial on cyclone disassemble of DC37 (aka DC39 in USA)? Thank you.
HI Kevin,
I would love to, the only issue is I have to wait for one to randomly come in for repair and I can just never predict what is coming - as soon as i see one I will.
Great! I genuinely love it when I get a response.
Glad to help :)
Happy Vacuuming !
....and my shame continues. Will do this ...is the screw driver you used a common one? I'm used to phillip's heads and flat blade screwdrivers.
Excellent video. Concise and to the point.
Do you do a video for the dc39 animal?
Fantastic ....thanx Smart Alec....so helpful ,fixed my Vacuum, now I'm looking up for a friend!!!!!
Thank you SO MUCH Alec, you helped us a lot :)
PLEASE HELP
Brilliant video, very much appreciated!!!
Could it be a good idea to put "number 15 torx" in the description?
Anyone know where I can find a tutorial on how to disassemble the head on the same model? Mine is the one without a turbo head
I will certainly do a video on teh DC39 as soon as I get one in for repair. I have to wait and see what comes through he door to be able to do the videos.
can you Show me exactly what Kind of srewdriver you use???
@dreaddog It is just as easy although there are more screws and it is less likely to get blockages compared with the dc08. Just keep a clean work area and organise your screws neatly you will have no problems.
Many thanks.
Still after doing it I notice succession loss in the connection between the radix and handle (esp. when holding up the DC08 while cleaning staircase, a gap between the handle and the radix appeared).
On cleaning the yellow part pre-motor filter, with a compressor
( TIP use a wheel air compression at a tank station ) - this gap disappeared => change filter
Spot on, you've saved me buying a new one !!!... Thanks !!...
Regards
Alec
If you know how to use a multimeter test the continuity from the plug to the cord reel it is likely broken at the very first part of the retract. If you want a suggestion for a bagged vacuum take a look at Nilfisk. They are well made and most of the range carry a 5yr warranty.
Thanks Alec, you're a top man!
i've just completely stripped my DC08 Animal, and cleaned and washed it all. Just waiting for the new motor to arrive - then rebuild with new filters. It should be like a new hoover when im done...I'll let you know! :-)
Hi There, as far as I am aware you cannot get the manifold apart. The best you can do is to get a flexible brush into the little airways to clean them out. I havent tried to pull it apart personally because with dyson its either screwed or glued and since there are no screws I figure they dont want you to open it.
Regards
Alec
I took my DC11 cylinder apart to clean it and have forgotten how to reassemble the catch that releases the bin when you want to empty it. Any ideas? Thanks.
That's great news. An allen key hey, I will try that because not everyone has a torx set.
