      That's awesome! I felt out of place because I was amongst many other younger kids and obviously was skating like a total newbie. There are some great youtube skating channels that offer great tips. It'll also be great if you have a friend that knows how to skate. But I think the best advice I got was to always stay at your own pace and just get absolutely comfortable with simply cruising on our board. I'm definitely still a newbie! Also, I recommend picking up some basic safety gear if you haven't done so already. Stay safe and have fun!

    I have an 11yo daughter who loves skateboarding but she doesn’t always have the confidence to walk out onto the skatepark amongst others. So here I am at age 42 learning to skate so I can be her skate buddy. First session went ok. Took a couple of spills and I probably looked kinda ridiculous but I really enjoyed it. What you realise is how focused you have to be just to stay upright. And because it’s so difficult I can totally see how it becomes addictive. Now I want to get better so I can cruise around the park with some style and maybe see my daughter make real progress. She’s a natural compared to me for sure.

    I'm doing the same thing. 42 years old, and my wife (45y/o) decided she wanted to roller skate, so I compromised and told her I would skate but had to be outside. No skating rinks. The last thing I want to do is run over a little kid. So, I got a pair of inline skates, and she got a pair of quads. Been out like 6 times now, and having a blast. Just getting good enough to hop curbs and stuff, so I'm no pro, but it's been a lot of fun. Fell a good few times, and we feel it a little longer than a teenager, but it turns out we still heal up in our 40s. Decided to put a board together and give that a go. Can't wait for it to get here. Not gonna quit the inlines for sure, but a board just seems more me. I hope you stick with it and have fun.

    I am 46 years old and my 8 year old son wanted to learn to skate, so I bought him a Penny and I a skateboard ... the problem was who teaches us? After a few days and some scrapes and falls, I learned the hard way 😣 but it was fun. Currently 6 months have passed and I managed to buy a longboard dance (and protections! 😜) and it is incredible !! there is no doubt that it is never too late to learn and do what you like. I'm 23 now. My dream since childhood is to learn skateboarding and bike. However, as a youngest only girl in a strict asian family. My parents didn't allow me to roam outside and kept me locked on the house (unless you'll be going to work or have some other agendas) . When I was young, I never experienced to play on the streets or whatsoever. Its one of the factor that makes my social anxiety develops more. But still, I want to taste freedom by learning something like this. I want to travel around places and be freespirited once in a while. I became isolated but I knew on myself that I'm an adventurous person. I thought it is too late but saw this, you make me inspired again.

    I'm turning 60 this year and bought a longboard. I did all board sports in my youth until about 30. So I'd figured I could still manage. But my muscles weren't used to it anymore and I fell. I learned that if you are stepping, your front foot should not have too much pressure. But while you have both feet on the board, _always_ put your body weight on your front foot. (Except if there are obstacles.) Your back foot (while you are still in the process of learning) should remain as loose as possible. I thought if I'd buy a longboard I could have more relaxing rides, but the truth is that you still have to work with your body. The movement always goes from head (look where you are going) to shoulders, hips and knees down to the front foot. It's a full body workout.
    And don't be a fool like me. If you start, from scratch or after not skateboarding for a long time, _always wear protection_ until you feel comfortable. For me it took two afternoons to get back into that stoked feeling of being in the flow again. 😉

    When I was a kid, between 8th and 9th grade, I went on summer vacation with my friend's family to Florida. I had some spending money that I saved up to have fun while we were there, but first day I went into a skate shop and blew all my money on a professional board. I totally sucked but skating was always something I wanted to do, so I had high hopes. When I came back home that kinda got put on the back burner. Bandcamp started and I never really looked back with music and drums. Now that the pandemic hit, playing music and drums for a living is on the back burner. I'm 43 now, a father, and I have a lot of time on my hands. So now my daughter and I started skating together. Man, it's hard to put into words how bonding it's been for the two of us. I hope you and yours, and we too, keep at it. Failing and getting up and trying again. There's something very powerful in that recipe.

    I love that he’s learning. One thing is to learn tricks that aren’t high risk. I started skating at 14, but I’m 30 now and just started guitar, and I see 3 year olds shredding, I know how you feel.

I think some people feel they are to old for many things, but its good to fight those thoughts. between 10 and 12 I had a skateboard. First I made one with half rollerskates, and after a while I bought one. Sort of pennyboard... This was 1979. After I went 13, I never skate again. (girls.. ) Now I am 54, had two hart operations and bouhgt two boards... Practicing a lot. Itś kinda hard, but there is progress, and I love it. Hopefullu you keep on doing it, because.... You know, itś awesome. But... I practice early in the morning on a far away parkingplace. And when I am better then I am now, I can skate from my house. Most newbies lock their knees, which ensures an amazing way of falling. First thing, bend your knees a bit. And when you feel you're going to fall, drop your body to lower the center of gravity. Falling will end up in a short slide or roll instead of a maximum velocity somersault.

    • @ThatAdamDiaz
      @ThatAdamDiaz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tips Pipo! It was a weird feeling at first, and still is sometimes, feeling like my legs are locked stiff on the board as I'm trying to move. I'm a lot better now turning right, but still a bit stiff turning left.

      Hi there! I had tried it very briefly in my teen years, but wasn't very good at it at all. When getting back on to it in my 40s, I found the hardest part was trying to turn; and obviously just building up the courage to stay on the board. Man Buy a Helmet. And some pads. It will really help with your progress and confidence. Learning in your 40’s means its only a matter of time before your first visit to a hospital. I should know ... after getting back into it in my 30’s ...(I’m 45 now) A regularly dislocated arm resulting in surgery ... broken ribs and a slam Thant left me with concussion ... the guy in the shop laughing at the suggestion of buying a helmet is bollocks. I just found an Element board a neighbour had put out on the kerb. Gonna learn starting today. I could do an ollie and a shove-it when I was a teen but that's it. And neither of those I could do when rolling because I was terrified of stacking it. I'm 40 now and way more confident in my abilities and I think that is where us older learners can start from. I just got a few boards, I’m 41. What scares me is the balance, how did you get past that fear so quick? You have been doing great!

    • @ThatAdamDiaz
      @ThatAdamDiaz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's awesome! I got a fairly wide skateboard, and I think that feels great for cruising, but I'm trying to learn some basic tricks such as the shove it and I think it would probably be slightly easier on a lighter (not as wide) board. For balancing, the sensation for me almost felt like skating on ice for the first time, you almost kinda freeze fearing the board would just slide out from under you; but I guess these are all normal things to overcome when skating for the first time. I got some really helpful tips from watching Aaron from Braille Skateboarding youtube channel, where he gives great advice about just logging hours on your board, just cruising, focusing on the carve and kick turning. You should check it out if you haven't already! Stay safe! Also getting some basic protective gear may help as well, in terms of your confidence. Stay safe!

    • @ThatAdamDiaz
      @ThatAdamDiaz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! Yea, he did recommend kinda small wheels, but it worked out ok, as I'm not usually on super rough surfaces (at least as much as I can avoid it). HK is not as convenient in general to skate freely in huge parking lots for example as compared to the States. It's generally a small, packed, and mostly privately owned areas that make it a little less convenient. But definitely get some pads and helmet to be safe!
