There should be a class action lawsuit against BMW (& other manufacturers) for saying that the transmission fluid doesn’t get changed because that’s total crap (like my transmission). My 2009 BMW 1 series 128i convertible has transmission issues and only 116k miles. The previous owner never changed the fluid per BMW and now it shudders in 4th & 5th gears when I drive it in full automatic mode. If I manually shift it drives fine with no shudder. If there has been a schedule to change the fluid and the previous owner had it done this most likely wouldn’t be a problem. Now I’m screwed with a transmission that is not going to last very long. It’s a crime to not have a schedule to maintain it. I read up on this and found that there is no coolant flush, or trans flush, or diff flush or fuel filter that is scheduled by BMW. That’s criminal on the part of BMW. No wonder BMWs have so many issues. I’m sick of auto makers misinforming customers on these maintenance issues. BMW should be forced to either replace transmissions that have issues like mine or replace the entire car. Won’t ever buy another BMW ever again. And good luck selling my car without replacing the transmission!!
ZF's own documents state to change fluid at 150k km (92000k miles). These manufacturers don't want to service it. Daughter's Alfa Romeo has 8HP50 and the dealership said they never service these transmissions. I sent him the ZF document and he will get with his service manager to see if they will change their stance on it. I am doing this same service on daughter's car today. I am using the Mopar 8 and 9 speed fluid. Great vidio.
If I just drain and fill without removing the pan, can I add full synthetic oil like Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic even though the existing bmw oil is semisynthetic and probably a different color? I know this is a controversial topic.. but just asking anyways😊
@@Sals_GarageI don’t want to do a complete flush since I hear it could end up being bad , so you don’t recommend using the required type of oil(zf or liqui moly) as long as it’s same color ?
@Sals_Garage I thought so unless there's a dedicated transmission cooler. If the same pan size it utilized then there's just more fluid to retain temps. I would love to see data from ppe on this.
I would guess the extra fluid will help with longevity since you have less cycling of the same fluid compared to having less fluid, and in this case the aluminum cover will help with extra/better cooling apposed to plastic dissipating the heat.
@@damians8498 I could be wrong but aluminum being a better conductor of heat should absorb the heat quicker from the fluid..I'm no thermodynamics expert but this is me coming from electronics background.
My x3 28 xdrive is at 56k miles.. can I just drain and fill without changing the cover? I'm thinking that there shouldn't be too much gunk in there and the drain should help as well.
@@Sals_Garage did you experience any problems after changing fluid i don’t trust alot of mechanics to work on my car so I’m thinking of doin it myself but it’s also my first time. 👎🏿 I got zf kit from fcp euro
If you do not replace the old ATF with the exact same new ATF you likely have shudder problems now. The reason being is all the old ATF fluid that remains the torque converter will mix with the new and dissimilar fluid. You can never fully flush the transmission in a DIY. That critical fact is never revealed in any of the home mechanic you tubers. You can never mix ATF fluids of dissimilar brands.
Zero issues with the transmission since this video was uploaded (7/2/2024 at this time of writing). Put around 25k miles on the car ever since, and it still shifts like new for 155k miles. Tuned with Rod Sutphin's trans tune for over a year now as well.
@@TriNguyen-co6jui am interested in this tune of the zf gearbox. You have this 530e right? Can you please givr me more details if you will? I wouldn’t mix two different oils. Try and use the oil in my description or OEM to make sure it is compatible with each other. Good luck 👍

Which application software using for oil temp?
Not sure what Tri the owner uses, but I have used MHD guages with good success.
Can I still do mine at 80,000 miles ? BMW n55 motor 535i 2013?
Yes I did mine at 105k and it felt better.
It's a messy job, but important nonetheless. 👍
100%. Definitely would be easier on a lift as well
Very true.
So what was the reason to prefilled the pan?
To keep the transmission healthy upon cold start.
