    Great video and thanks for the clear explanation. As Chinese myself, we will never forget Yuan Longping's contribution to China and the world. My grandparents have experienced these dark times when there were not enough foods in China and even today they still have this habit to store extra foods at home. May he rest in peace.

      ye, but they've badly messed up with covid once again. IMO hiding the fact that they did have a 2nd wave and forcefully controlled information leaks about the infected was disgraceful. The fascist and corrupt of Chinese government must be held accountable for their lies and how it has lead to the suffering and death of countless people let alone those outside China.
      We must all stop this modern day Hitler by voiceing our objections to media who support him and his 'wolf warriars' over the terrorism of Taiwan, its genocide of Uighors, its racism toward whites and black races, it's treatment if HK activists, , .,Also, Tibet Mongholia, East Turkistan, Adrica, Phillipines, and then of course its insane policies over Covid and last but not least its huge Carbon footprint.!

      Whereas President Biden will eventually have to step down after 4-8 years, he's not going to rival China's Belt and Road Initiative, when he can't even remain in power in America after 10 years.

    When ever I talk about food and agriculture being a backbone of any nation, I usually get fobbed off and told Agriculture is not important in a modern society we can just import what we need.
    People still don't understand that we can live without alot of things. The things we need to live is food and water. I am glad that China is improving its agriculture and incorporating technology into it. Identify the problems and introduce safeguards and checks and reduce possible risks.

    I notice there is a huge collaboration going on between China and Argentina.
    Last year, Argentina's export skyrocketed thanks to export to China.
    China also invested pig farming in Argentina in a huge scale until the people there protested.

      @Shenzhou. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TTTzzzz You said: _"A 10 storey building is more expensive than 10 acres of farmland"_
      It depends on how you *quantify* the "expense." 10 acres of farmland first requires deforestation at the expense of animal habitats. The farmland is susceptible to the bad weather like flood and drought, pesticides are required to keep the pests away, and fertilizer seepage wreaks havoc at nature's expense again. After multiple harvests, the soil eventually becomes infertile and needs to time to recover.
      Building a 10 storey building is initially expensive yes, but upon completion, it has the same building lifespan as any other constructed building. The crops inside the vertical farms are shielded from the elements and pests. Temperature, UV light and watering times can controlled and adjusted as desired. Eventually, the revenue and income from harvests will pay off the initial costs of building the 10-storey vertical farm.

    This is a question that also applies to the US and other nations with an exponentially growing population, in that so many of the resources and farming goes into the meat industry. Cows and pigs take up a significant portion of the fresh water supply and the majority of crops are grown specifically to feed them and not people. Hence, I think it is inevitable that we will be moving away from animal farming in future generations despite that both China and the US have a rising demand for meat production since the 1970s.
    I think President Xi Jinping could make a significant impact on China’s cultural dependence on meat, and instead promote the wonderful vegan meat products that originated from ancient Chinese Buddhist temples to steer China away from the toxic environmental consequences of a rising demand for animal products. Also organic farmers should be given govt subsidies and more support- or a mandate that organic farming practices should be the norm, as you mention, the dumping of toxic fertilizers is a problem that that affects the entire population and can no longer be isolated.
    I’ll be quite impressed if China leads in the organic food revolution. Certainly Russia can learn from China’s early mistakes in agriculture and adopt vertical farming, organic farming practices and less dependence on meat as they seem to be a nation in which agricultural exports is rapidly ascending and due to their large land mass, could quite easily become the food exporter for all of Europe and China.

    Food is security. It is important to be as self sufficient as possible. I don't think China would forget how the USA blocked sale of fertiliser to China. Buying land in other countries may not be the only solution. Australian government is turning the sale of agriculture land to China into a geopolitical distrust issue. Better to work with reliable producers and at the same time invest in agriculture research. Farmers in the Asian culture are generally regarded as 'poor and struggling' unlike the West where the farmers are usually well to do hence the problem of younger not wanting to be 'farmers'. Having said all these, I think China will still need to import food particularly quality food as its the average wealth of the population improves. Also, food is very much part of Chinese culture!

    Actually, many farmers are using smartphone to do e-commerce in China now, especially, the outbreak pushed more farmers to use smartphone and tech to manage their businesses. They have to thank the younger generation assigned to each provinces are teaching these farmers to use tech. Several countries also implemented this e-commerce idea too. Such as, Mexico students studied in China helped alot of Mexican farmers during the outbreak to implement e-commerce.
    You should have mentioned that China enforced 1 child policy was due to food security years ago, where the western countries failed to mention and instead they spin the news that China is not practicing human rights, freedom, etc.
    China is experimenting rice growing in space and they brought back seeds to grow in China too.
    China is also farming using sea water that many countries do not know about. There is a huge facility that supplies sea water for drinking too.
    Last time you talked about reforestation. Many of these desert lands turning green are using for farming as well. I believe it was in Qinghai, where farmers grow watermelons in the desert, while planting trees too.

    Also very excited to see how technology is utilised in such amazing ways, cutting middle man. Hopefully farmers get a better deal because its not fair that they are doing back breakimg work and get only a small margin of profit. Thats why farmers are commiting suicide in many places and no one wanna be farmers

      Totally agree that farmers need a better life. China will be investing billions in rural areas in next 5 years. This is going to be the biggest disruption for China in next years and farmers should benefit if the plan gets executed correctly.

    Mr. Yuen Longping, Father of Hybrid Rice is indeed the Great Hero of China saving all Chinese from the disastrous feminine happened in the 50's. China can not feed 22% of the world population with merely 7% farm land. Farming innovations and applied technologies of China are really helpful to mankind.

      I don't get what you mean .
      He is stating a fact here .
      You can interpret it as China wasting food and India doesn't.
      Or you can interpret it as China getting enough food and India not .
      But he can't say India more or both the same while that is not true , can he ?

      @@bobojr456 , Indians are generally very happy when their Masters pet them on their heads and say " Well done, my boy". In spite of their claim over their customs and traditions, they really are not that proud of their claims and practices, as long as they leave the bottom 50% of her population to suffer, their national objective will always be far into the future!

    • @PascalCoppens
      @PascalCoppens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did mean that in the context of providing enough food to the population, not that I mean Indians are not allowed to eat as much. Sorry if I offended unintentionally.

    Thank you for an interesting and educational presentation. As a US citizen, I focus in on one comment or idea you mentioned - that about Chinese organizations actually Purchasing or acquiring in some legal manner the title for control of large tracs of agricultural lands that my government is designed to recognize and protect in a multitude of ways. You justify this practice as "Insurance" for China and its huge population of hungry peoples. Now, my point and position is - Why should My ancestors provide - in any permanent way - a vehicle for Food Security for folks in a far away land? This is when my hackles rise up and prepare for challenge. To the best of my limited knowledge, not many organizations or individuals from Western countries own, control or directly benefit from agriculture lands in China in any permanent or protected manner. Although sad, I see this divulgence of alleged rights and/or needs as a future Battleground that bids no happy outcome. And, let me take it a step further - here leaders - like wealthy Bill Gates and powerful associates - want ME to think about and accept eating artificial meat products (and BUGS) so that more lands can be used to produce more Plant based resources that feed more people and Save the earth, etc. So, flip the game and ask why must I, and my kids, give up beef, pork and chicken in order to raise more food for a bunch of folks in China? i really don't see a desirable trade off for me and mine. You might also ask what percentage of my country and other Western countries really give an honest Rat's ass about such nonsense. Also, Face Recognition is just another way a small league of privileged folks and their governmental stooges may Control more of everything by using smart technology.

    Your info about Yuan Long Ping is incomplete. Hybrid rice not only increase output by 20%, most importantly this variant is salt water tolerant (imagine the amount of barren land due to global warming now can be used again) and tastes good.

    Great video, it's hard to see such a objective video about Chinese agricultural industry. As a student of Nanjing Agricultural University I want to point out a main problem of Chinese agriculture you didn't mention. Due to different climate and terrain, China's rural economy is facing uneven development between regions. You can find smart farms in eastern China. Those farmers are skilled to operate machines and computers. But you can also find some old farmers who can't even read or write in western China. That's why we're carrying forward land transferring and smart agriculture. Professional agricultural companies could improve the efficiency of food producing. And by the time, those unskilled farmers could be turned into new urban citizens.

    I am from Bangladesh and I have around 35 acre of farming land generating rice regularly. We have a similar history regarding agriculture like china. Is there any companies which are providing technical support outside of china , as I have already guessed the west technology is not gonna be viable for us but Chinese companies can offer some technical support.
    And your quality of videos are top notch.
