All these years of walking the canal and I never knew those facts. Very interesting,

      You and me both Frank!
It was only when I was researching the earlier Kemmett Canal video that I came across vague references to this one. I had to dig deep to get the full story.
      Glad you found it interesting.
      Cheers!
      Paul

      Hello Michael!
      Glad you found it fascinating.
Yes, I only found out about this canal when I was researching the earlier Kemmett Canal video. It took a while to get the full picture with the research.
Hope you are having a good week!
      Take care,
      Paul

Amazing what you find out Paul, I don't think many of us had any idea of the amount of history just on our door step. Good to watch. Take care. Ron

      Thank you Ron!
I don't think many local people or canal interest people are remotely aware of the Cambridge Canal.
This one took a lot of original research - it is almost like the canal history experts were trying to bury the history of this!
      Glad you enjoyed it.
      Take care,
      Paul

Yes, many more of these videos in the pipeline for the Cotswold Canals.

That’s so interesting, I had no idea we had so many secrets right on our doorstep, I used to watch the hammer house of horror series as a young lad and had many sleepless nights after watching them, I can recall some spooky houses and wonder if the Whitminster house was actually the one used, and I am certainly surprised that a pleasure canal was created back in the day, that’s fantastic to see and learn about.. greta video as always Paul, thank you 👍🏻

Yes, this tale is barely known about these days - it took a lot of months of research on this one.
I would have loved to have gone on that Venetian barge gliding through the gardens of Whitminster House down to Sabrina.
      Take care,
      Paul

Hi Paul, well this episode really lived up to the series title.
Loved seeing the extracts from the books, it's not something that you can often do. The mansion did have a eirie appearance no surprise that it appeared in the Hammer Horror films.
How many more secrets have you yet to reveal, we'll just have to wait!! You've put a great deal of effort to bring this story to light. Really enjoyed watching!!
    All the best!!

Yes, I have a few more up my sleeve before moving onto something else - and more in the companion Thames & Severn Series too.
This one though took some research - almost like the canal historians wanted us to forget all about him.
Glad to redress the balance a little.
      Thanks so much!
      Take care,
      Paul

Well! That was a good'n Paul. And all that, years and years before Mr Rolt got on the scene starting canal preservation!

Yes, a fair bit of research went into this one! Been months in the planning.
Yes, a long time before Mr Rolt. I am very surprised that this story isn't more widely known. Happy to redress the balance a tiny bit with this video.
      Take care,
      Paul

That's a canal rich with history. I am sure you must be surprised at things you find in your background studies. How wonderful that there is so much to find online & in old books.

A very interesting and well-researched piece of social history of the Cambridge Canal - built to serve the opulent lifestyle of the 18C aristocracy. In today's more democratic times, many more of us are able to enjoy these beautiful waterways - though not this one. One day perhaps, the Cambridge Canal will be restored and reopened to a wider public....maybe?

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thank you Malcolm!
Yes, pure speculation on my part, but if Richard Cambridge had not moved to London, and if his son had an heir, maybe it (landscaping and canal) would not have deteriorated, and he would not have allowed the proprietors of the Kemmett & Stroudwater Canals to have (partially) built on top of his.
However, it was the realignment of the waterways around Whitminster when the feeder and weir was put in for the Gloucester & Sharpness Ship Canal's water supply which really disrupted Cambridge's handiwork.
I think it would be very unlikely to be restored, but never say never! I for one would have loved to have gone on a cruise along it towards the River Severn on a Venetian barge.
      Thanks again!
      Take care,
      Paul

Another of your videos so packed with information that I had to watch it twice! It was marvellous that you found out about this pleasure canal& its innovator. Maybe Cambridge had been on the’Grand Tour’ and seen pleasure craft in Venice hence the idea of the Venetian barge for his guests. And the dining al fresco. The amount of research you put into your videos is exceptional. Just digging out the maps of the time takes effort. I do pause the film to get my bearings & view the maps. I appreciate your hard work & the easy to comprehend narrative. Thanks Paul.

@@dianarolph1770 Thank you Diana! Glad you found it interesting.
Yes, I would have loved to have travelled along that in a Venetian Barge. Must have looked incredible! Sad that photography had not yet been invented then.

So much info here on what i suspect is a somewhat forgotten bit of canal. That really ought to be brought back into the minds of historians and local people.
DId this take many takes to get right? 😊

    • @westcountrywanderings

      Thanks Shaun!
Actually, I think they were all done in one take apart from one where the light levels increased resulting in over exposure, so I had to reshoot.
The commonest reason for me reshooting though is background noise! Chainsaws, planes, lorries, etc. Sometimes it is unavoidable though.
Yes, I am really surprised by how this, the first UK pleasure canal, has largely been ignored by canal historians.
      Cheers,
      Paul
