I'm 16 and I have autism, and I still chew on my shirts. All of my shirts besides my button down shirts have holes in the collar from it.I wasn't redirected to other chew stim alternatives until it was 11, so now it's a habit that I do without even thinking about it. Also I had those Lego chew toys, and the rubber bumps on the back break off very easily, and if he chews on them too much it starts to crack on the edges of the brick texture and they fall off too. I got ones that looked like crystals, and they lasted much longer, and the bumps were way harder to chew off, and they were smaller and softer.

I'm looking at pursuing a diagnosis in my 30s. I chewed my pencils in school, my sleeves on long sleeve shirts, the plastic nosepieces on metal-frame glasses (now I only go for plastic frame glasses with molded-in nosepieces), and, well into college, the collars on t-shirts. Switching from t-shirts to polos broke me of that habit.

I've just printed out a copy of the DSM criteria and am going through old photos and developmental paperwork (I was in OT for motor issues, and every time a progress report was made on that they analyzed everything from motor to social to academic), and am writing down what I find (plus what I remember and how I behave currently). I've got multiple things matching each of the diagnostic criteria, so I'm fairly confident of what the result will be.

I have to meet someone else with a couple of coins. I've been thinking about going to Colorado but I don't know if I want to fly. Am I taken by a songalon? And take like 3 days to get the. Was this Colorado a state that you ever lived in? And somebody when you said that you lived in 6 states with Colorado one of them.

When I was younger I was also a picky eater. I still do not eat asparagus, broccoli or cauliflower even today. I only started eating carrot sticks and celery sticks when I was able to dip them in ranch dressing or blue cheese dressing (like the way they are usually served with buffalo wings). Now as an adult I am able to eat cooked carrots if I have a pepper shaker and I am able to add some pepper for flavor.
When I was six years old (almost seven) I was introduced to Chicken McNuggets and I liked the dipping sauces (especially the barbecue sauce and hot mustard). Over time after eating this and some other solid foods I eventually started eating salads with Roquefort or blue cheese dressing and later acquired a taste for other salad dressing flavors such as oil and vinegar. I seem to remember that I was into my teenage years by then, though.
I have read that if you freeze a banana and put it through a food processor you can make something similar to ice cream but without all of the unhealthy ingredients that ice cream contains. You might give that a try (if he likes ice cream and other frozen snacks). I have not tried this myself but it sounds good. One word of warning, though. Bananas contain potassium and potassium is good in reasonable quantities but too much can be dangerous. You might want to consult with a doctor and/or a nutritionist about how much potassium is healthy for someone of his age, height, and weight. Bananas are good, but too much of anything is not good.
Also you might try making popsicles out of fruit juices. 100 percent fruit juice is nutritionally the best and still tastes good. I think they sell molds for this at Target. Walmart may also carry them.
There are at least a few important do’s and don’ts to be aware of as well.
    1. Don’t serve ice cream, brownies, or other other junk foods for breakfast under any circumstances. This includes toast with maple syrup or honey on it. My sister tends to have breakfasts like this and it is very bad for her teeth. She has had at least one root canal and tooth extraction already.
    2. Do teach him to use a spoon as soon as possible. He is old enough to learn how to do this (especially with the help of a physical or occupational therapist). If he does not learn this and other skills that he is physically capable of learning there is a good chance that other kids his own age will laugh at him.
    3. Once you get him eating solid foods you can teach him how to cut them himself. You can begin with butter knives and plastic knives and then work up from there as soon as he is developmentally ready. Do not cut all of his food for him;this is (most likely) not necessary. Even though he is not talking yet he can probably still learn this even without saying his first words yet. He can work on this at first on fairly soft foods such as chicken fingers (once he begins eating them). He may not be ready for steak yet, but chicken should at least be an option.
He can also begin learning how to use a good quality plastic fork that won’t break easily with the help of a physical or occupational therapist. He can begin to learn how to pick up and eat small pieces of cantaloupe and watermelon this way and eventually work his way up to chicken fingers. This worked for me when I was younger and you recently mentioned that he seems to like melon. Therefore this may work for him also.
For the moment this is all that I can think of for suggestions on how to get Ezra eating more foods (preferably ones with good nutritional value).

It's not gonna be short for me. It isn't a stimble I had to because I had a lot of fat lips cause I we didn't take very kind of people talking a lot of stuff about us and we used to fight getting a lot of fights when I was a little kid, I used to forget and so many fights when I was about as a resage. I had to be sent to home to the from school several times I had to say I want to say friends with these people they want to be my friends but I didn't take any stuff in the. I'm not that tough person, i'm, you know, but I used to get the c*** kid cause everyone my friends used to getting so many fights. We can't sell many fights, we all have, we're sucking on the shorts to make a fat lip, we had a bloody lip assault and like we used to get in so many fights. When we were kids, and I'm glad it's all. Because we were violent, we were like, 14 years old. Gotten a big fight with the cops I was. I was like one of the first times I hung around with my friends in my neighborhood so I don't allow people. And we used to fight with the cops all the time and I was sick of it because I know a lot of cops because there's a lot of cops that before my friend started hanging around my neighborhood that I knew from a lot of schools. I knew a lot of people and I didn't allow people that ended up being friends that just does not get along. Now, I'm just trying to go to. I'm gonna go to Virginia and visit someone I'm writing a nice place around. I've been there once. I wanted to go back so bad. I'm gonna try to find a place around here, chipa.
I'm looking for a place where the pool to I just want to jump in a pool when I get off the bus so I'm just going to fly to New York and state New York and then take a bus to Virginia. I have no I think I'm going to Virginia thouoh.

The only question I have is does the high chair for esra help him stay calmer during meal time or is it all just for his safety! I am curious because if it makes him feel more calm that is amazing that you can still use it for him!

I wonder if Ezra is chewing because he is uncomfortable or in pain. Maybe he has a urinary tract infection or something else that is causing pain.
From what I can remember from childhood on I usually only chewed on my shirts when I was in pain. Sometimes it was an ear infection. Other times it was a sinus infection. Other times it was a urinary tract infection. Sometimes even just an overly full bladder can trigger this. Shirt chewing never helped with toothaches or headaches, but otherwise it would often help to take my mind off of most other types of pain that I was feeling at the moment. Any of these might be enough to cause an increase in stims including the type mentioned in this video.
As an adult I don’t typically chew on my shirts but I did this myself for a short time back in early May of this year. This was in the days and hours before a kidney stone in my left ureter finally passed. After the stone passed the pain was gone and I haven’t chewed on any of my shirts since. Ezra probably doesn’t have a kidney stone (they are pretty rare at his age) but it seems to me that something is causing him discomfort.

    • @7Aheadfamily
      @7Aheadfamily  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you for sharing. You bring up a valid point, if Ezra has pain, he has no way of communicating to us where that pain is. This is a big issue, and has brought us into the ER a couple of times. Usually if Ezra is in pain we can tell by his different behavior. When he was 4 years old he had problems with pain and we found out it was acid reflux. But it's still a guessing game. Thank you for the ideas and for sharing your own experiences.

@@7Aheadfamily He is not getting enough chewing in his diet. raw cabbage, raw carrots, tough meat, stale bread, fresh peas, all this is missing. Make hard foods his only available foods for a period of time. Do NOT allow to chew on clothes, do allow chewing gum.
Chewing is not abnormal want, nor it is diagnostic, with exception of Smuth_Magenis syndrome, it is normal, what is not normal is the parent not providing boundaries and allowing damaging possessions.

@@7Aheadfamily This is very simple: just give NOTHING ELSE, and he will eat whatever foods are given. the technique is simple: in the morning you put out whatever food YOU chose (for example, raw carrots). Call the child once. Give 20 min for the meal, after that say "finished" and take the food away (some specialists advise to demonstrate throwing the food into a bin, I advise eating it if a parent wants to finish the food). 4 hours to go without a singkle snack, without a crumb!!!! Then next meak : the SAME food rejected at breakfast appears at the table, the child is called "come to eat" or "food is ready", 20 min are given. the remaining food is removed.
Repeat as many meals as you need for the child to start being grateful for any food.
Similar technique exists for toilet training.
Do not pay attention to his eating! his survival is his business! he is not helpless, he is a strong young homo sapiens male, possessing the survival instinct and capable of surviving on any food. Do not offer anything special, do not express interest. Show that you don't mind and don't care about what and how much he eats, however you won't give any replacements.

Although a potentially abusive technique such as this would work with someone like Simon, it is completely unnecessary as he will learn on his own without the unnecessary force, and potentially negative long term effects. With Ezra , we did something similar to this, however, having him clean up, his messes is actually rewarding for him as he loves to make messes and the attention he gets while cleaning them up. He is making progress, and will eventually get there on his timetable.

    • @svetavinogradova4243
      @svetavinogradova4243 ปีที่แล้ว

@@7Aheadfamily Again, your irrational belief take precedence. This technique is NOT abusive at all, as each child has a choice to go do things into the loo, not on the floor.
It WILL work with Ezra, if the mother gets temporarily switched off (goes on holiday), as the mother is determined to NOT do this.
Is Simon nappy free already (should have been by 18 months, by the way)?
Your idea that "eventually we will get there" is also irrational. No, it won't get there. if by 7 your techniques did not succeed, they won't succeed in the next 50 years.
You are losing valuable time by sticking to measuresthat don't work.
I can tell you that there is nowhere more negative than the Ezra's current situation:
you soooo protected him from any stress that he did not need speaking.
However, Angelman syndrome is still a possibility, then I will take my words back - this needs a blood test though!

Your removal of my thoughtful and polite comment proves your determination to keep things as bad as they are ( psychiatric disorder in 2 boys). I am not surprised, I saw it straight away. You need autism in them, it validates you.
@7Aheadfamily I know that your son is a human, I know universal techniques for human children, and I know that science has not known a single case where a kid died in front of a plate with food.
You know what your kid's autism is? "My mum cares about me so much that I cannot develop as a normal human".
Your care is too much, pathological, and suffoc@tes the development. Your don WILL eat, will eat everything, happily ! But you never let him! That is what is scary. The technique is tested on thousands of kids, works 100%, and is only sabotaged by mothers sometimes.
The technique is: 1) remove the availability of any crumb, crisp or morsel for the kid to obtain outside meals.
    2) 3 times a day you say "Simon, food", and NOTHING else, not a single word about food, meal or him.
    3) The food is available for 20 min.
    4) You DON'T help him eat!!!
    5) After 20 min, the food is removed with the word "finished".
    6) The food is destroyed in the view of the kid - either eaten or thrown into the bin.
    7) If the kid refused to eat the previous meal, same kind of food is offered for the next meal.
The technique works absolutely and with every kid. It is up to you to use it or not, but you must realise that it is YOU who intends to keep the problem snd worsen it, not your child. It is YOU who subconsciously desires to sabotage the normal development for yoyr two kids. Just face your inner desires, they are hidden from yourself.
Your kid WILL eat , and any food problems will be forgotten in a couple of weeks. BUT you won't let it happen.
To try to help you and your kids, I must make you aware of your own inner protest.

@@7Aheadfamily No, not all the family. And not only carrots and cabbage - anything firm: stale bread, nuts (almonds, for example), dry cured meat, cured pork with skin on (very lovely tasting). All foods that require intense chewing.
This will satisfy his desire to chew and steer him away from maladaptive behaviour.
Regarding genetic testing - your severely affected son is blonde, smily, does not speak at all and has poor motor skills - all this indicates Angelman syndrome as a possibility
