    I am autistic and I went through awful times in school, not because I am of low intellect but because I am articulate and used words and terms far in advance of most of my classmates.
    I was bullied constantly, the teachers seemed to be disappointed that I couldn't take it and made me feel ashamed of myself.
    Six years later I enrolled in some part time college courses, and it was the making of me. I managed to make lots of friends thanks to my sense of humour and high grades.
    It was everything high school should have been but wasn't.
    In school I had no interest in much of the curriculum, I spent my days looking out of the window wishing I was free of the place.

      @@thebaconplays5305 because people treat you like an outcast I'm autistic too and look where I'm trying to pursue I'm trying to become a musician the reason why it's hard to make friends when you're autistic is because people look at you weird people treat you like an outcast like hey this guy is weird don't hang out with him and I don't think that's fair to the person who has autism I'm not saying it's a bad disorder it's a good disorder because people with autism can learn faster but it's hard to comprehend certain things and it sucks because when you have this disability people treat you like you're stupid like you won't get nowhere in life and I hate that when I hear someone say that it really pisses me off

      I’m high functioning autistic. I act mostly normal in how I interact and interpret what’s going on. I’m off when it comes to facial expression but do emote just not as much as most people would. I sometimes misinterpret or get confused by rare phrases or rhetorical sarcastic questions but with kids and adults like these people in this video it can be hard for me to understand what they’re trying to tell me. Some of what the man with Michael comes across like to me is that he’s trying not to falter and phrase his question about “a man” as “what man, where do you mean this man in relation to our day and immediate conversation”. It’s good just to me seems off because of the challenges autistic people can depict unintentionally.

      @Noor jahan Jahan do your best to believe in your son’s health and future. Remain calm, don’t let yourself get swept up in excessive emotions I have been 90% better at controlling my emotions to make sure they don’t cloud my mood, my body’s comfortability, my heart for those I love respect and admire for their similar strengthening emotionally, getting less physical about resolving problems just being kinder to others and being less judgmental in a moralistic worldview.

      Most people without autism do not know what they really want to do in life in any case. Just focus on all your special interests, enjoy them & excel in them with practice, diligence & perseverance. Then some work/training opportunity will come along... Get a college mentor or job coach if you are in UK (and you are already 18) to advise you. Sometimes a job mentor/coach without SEND experience will be better because Mencap job coaches often have too low expectations.

    I wonder what perception of the world looks like for them? I wonder if it feels real, fake or strange. There's the ones that smile and the ones who are lost inside the mind.

    • @spiralpython1989
      @spiralpython1989 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Most autistic people are somewhere between the ‘smilers’ and the ‘lost’ people (to use your descriptors). And many of us can seem like a ‘smiler’ in certain situations, while appearing to be withdrawn in others. In the autism community we have a saying; “If you’ve met someone with autism, you have met one person with autism”. 4/4 people in my household are autistic: I am a parent and an allied health professional and I have higher degrees in Education. My young adult children all have high to very high needs, and all need support workers to varying degrees to negotiate their daily lives.
      As for how we perceive the world; many autistic people feel like they are “not normal”. Many autistic people have tried to fit into mainstream environments, but continually feel that they/we don’t really fit. Many autistic people find their local community to be sensorially overwhelming, and many try hard to deal with everyday life, schooling, working, such that when they/we get home its just too difficult to engage in anything more than alone time.
      Many autistic people see the world and social processes differently to what we have learned is a neurotypical perspective. But our differences in perceptions make autistic people valuable in the world of work, as we can often see shortcomings in decisions that many not be obvious to neurotypical people. But equally, many autistic people believe that everybody sees the world the same way they do. These people have difficulty with ‘theory of mind’, and often think that everyone knows what they are thinking; and thus the world can be frustrating when other people seem to be making stupid decisions. Ironically, these same autistic people don’t even consider that they don’t know what other people are thinking or feeling.
      So, yes, we experience the world differently than people who are not autistic, but each autistic person sees things individually too. Yes, there are patterns, but overall I think that there is more diversity within the ranks of autism than there is between neurotypical people in any given community.

    • @krystallvinter7438
      @krystallvinter7438 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What an odd question to ask us. We can't tell you what it feels like to be autistic, as we haven't tried anything else. Imagine if I asked you how it feels to not have autism. How would you answer that question?

    • @Havencheese
      @Havencheese 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@spiralpython1989 thank you so much for the insight. I’m a 1:1 worker and I sometimes wonder about this, yet never ask. Some of my participants are non verbal, so some of their actions aren’t always transparent to anyone other themselves. Everyone has a unique perception of the world around them but with neurotypical givens and etiquettes that are almost always adhered to without question (queueing, road rules, greeting people etc...you name it) it’s always wonderful to see how a fresh pair of eyes interprets social constructs and situations.

    I find it strange how they say the autism spectrum is so wide it includes people with learning disabilities to people who don't have any. Asperger's doesn't have a speech delay and has motor difficulties, but they class it all as the same thing

    • @therabbithat
      @therabbithat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Asperger's people can have speech delay and motor difficulties sometimes. It's wide and deep. It must be very difficult to figure out what kind of care a child needs when you don't know what's going on in their heads, let alone how they will develop. There are kids who are completely non-verbal who have IQs well above average, and people who you would never realize were autistic until they got stressed out and suddenly lost the ability to move or speak.
      The distinction between Aspergers and autism isn't as clear cut as they thought, so they got rid of Aspergers from the DSM5

    Anyone can be autistic, autism is a very broad mind of mode or method of perceiving that is inborn and very different than most peoples. Here is a fact ~~> you can have a seriously affected Down's Syndrome child that is very aware socially compared to a savant highly adapted independent autist who does not have a clue socially so this special person is pure autistic and worth defining. Many of the young people in this video are mentally impaired severely needing help forever and they also have autism, but that does not define it ~~it does not!

    I'd really like to know after watching this video, how do you assess individuals according to the "autistic / learning difficulties" scale? I have family members, children of my friends and people I've dealt with in a professional capacity, either as a care-worker, dealing with young people 'with learning difficulties (dealing with a massive spectrum of behaviours).. to my current job.. encountering an individual with anti-social behaviour, targetting myself, and other female members of the public, while dealing with an inexperienced, juvenile, team captain attempting to mansplain me & tell me, I have to put up with it, while this particular individual bullies, beats up, rants at, uses violence and coercive behaviour towards myself, other members of the public, male and female, including spitting on cars and murdering pigeons... ?
    When do you stop & take account?
    These individuals in this video, seem exceptionally shy and incredibly peaceful, with learning difficulties, that's it.
    Why do some individuals & their defenders use the autistic label as an excuse to justify anti-social behaviour, inappropriate aggression and violence against others, whether, females, males, random members of the public, or innocent birds, or wildlife? Where do you draw the line?
    Thanks.. !
    (Wondering whether or not to report my so-called team captain or leave my job due to inappropriate handling, dealing with an alcoholic guy assaulting random members of the public, claiming he's entitled because he's autistic, and the local team captain says.. "that's ok!"... ?????)..

    • @randomsmile9064
      @randomsmile9064 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm autistic with learning and behavioral problems my entire life. I've gone through very aggressive and violent phases. but to attack people?? kill animals?? that's not autistic at all.. that's something far more serious.. You should report your team captain and get this individual the proper support and help he / she needs... Autistic people are rarely ever violent.. The only way I can see an autistic person being violent is if they are stuck in a situation and can not escape.. Most autistic people avoid conflict at all costs.. attacking random people is the complete opposite of avoiding conflict.. The only times I Would be violent or aggressive towards another person is if its during an outburst due to a loss of control from built up stress / frustration. or if I'm stuck in a situation with no escape.

      Daniel Read Have you considered home education? My autistic son absolutely loves home schooling. We go out 4-6 days a week on educational outings & he gets to do all the things he loves with people who have similar interests. As long as your English, Maths & Science are up to scratch, you can always return to school/college later, if you get bored but you never will. My son loves trains & has a train driving lesson with TfL on his birthday. He loves music, nature & active exercise so we go to workshops, recitals, Kew, gym, etc. He’s always on educational outings. He loves snooker so last week he was playing for 3 days away from home at a world disability tournament & as soon as that was over, he went with his carer, to perform a music gig in a care home in another town where we have friends. The opportunities to learn & meet massive, fun but scary challenges, to take you out of your comfort zone, to develop as a resilient & confident young adult are all there. He is so happy & generous that he even helps out in charity & community despite his autism & intellectual disability. Home education is person centred on you & your special interests alone but your parents have to be unitedly committed. It’s very hard work as you’ll be trained & you will learn way more than at school & HEd is definitely not for the uninitiated. There’s even a book on those who have gone before - those parents who chose to homeschool their autistic children & youths & all witnessed what a wonderfully refreshing & life-transforming experience it has been. I started homeschooling my autistic son from year 7. You get to meet all sorts of people of all ages outside your school bubble in your community at libraries, museums, galleries, gym, care homes, etc. My boy has met homeless people on the street, too. He will get an education from spending time IN COMMUNITY with real people (not just with the middle classes he meets in his church) in real situations informally, at the University of Life, but as I’ve indicated, your parents have to be willing, bold & committed.

    The people in my life feel the need to remind me that I'm not a teenager, but it is the way they are nasty towards me about it. That is WHY I'm still stuck in my twenties and thirties.
    Even after I move out of the Odeyemi household and won't have to continue living with my dad anymore, I will end up looking back on this time with bitterness and will end up becoming even more severely depressed than I already am at the moment. I will end up developing severe mental health issues later on in life.

You are not living with your parents or any of your other family members anymore, you need to find a way to let go of the past and grow up!!

    I think that every county or region in the UK should have its own dedicated Autism support centre, funded by the government.
    We can see now how many more people are becoming increasingly aware of Mental Health and this has been reflected by the fact that both the government and the Labour party have Ministerial departments that are set out to help in these areas.
    Of course I doubt very much will happen at the moment, not really under the Conservative party - they have never really been a friend of the NHS or particularly caring.
    Perhaps Sir Keir Starmer's party should they be fortunate enough to win the next General Election will be prepared to do more to help.
    At the moment in our area, apart from simply being diagnosed with Autism there's not really much in the way of services for adults. But there's an increasing number of young people who are Autistic.

    It's such a bizarre condition. You have people like those in the video and then those who communicate normally and hold good jobs and no one would suspect they had anything. The spectrum is insanely wide.

      I don't understand what you mean. You can mask your autism, for example if you have been taught to expect pain or punishment if you "give in" to the feelings you have.
      So you bottle it all up until the cork flies off and then you have a meltdown.
      Do you háve autism or are you speculating or..what's up?@@orlaw.8213

    Bitterness - Why It Is a Real Psychological Concern:
    I can’t see myself living till ninety let alone a hundred, in fact I can't see myself living till seventy or even sixty, because of having severe depression and other severe mental health issues, also because autistic people are far more likely to end up dying by suicide. I expect to die at the age of forty-something or fifty-something, although I am not trying to sound negative. It is best for me to simply live each day as though it is my last, regardless of whether or not it is the last time I will be on this earth. I am not able to feel grateful to still be alive, I find myself being bitter - I would prefer not to exist.

    Bitterness - Why It Is a Real Psychological Concern:
    I won't hesitate to get you chucked out of this mental health clinic, because I'm not in the mood for jokes or any conversations!! I'm already feeling depressed and irritable and snappy towards everyone!!
    I hope you brought something more sensible than that to wear, although I doubt you brought anything sensible at all!
    From now on I don’t want to give out my phone number to anybody anymore. I am not doing it to be nasty towards you or anything, I'll explain to you when we get back to the special needs accommodation.
