It’s good that Simon is learning please and thank you.
Maybe next he can start learning about when to say “please” and when to say “thank you” instead of saying the phrase “please and thank you.” This will probably take a while but it’s never too early to start.
He will probably need to see a number of examples in books, movies, tv shows and in real life before he really gets it. I think I was in about fourth grade (age ten) before I started to get it. I was level two when I was younger. Simon is level one. He might learn this more quickly than I did (maybe by the seven-to-nine age range).

I had such a tough week due to my autism, thank you for putting a smile on my face❤Ezra using his left hand reminded me, did you know that autistic people (myself included) are far more likely to be left-handed (about 28%) than the general population (about 10%)? There is definitely some genetic link there, but it's not yet fully understood. I don't find it surprising you have to repeat stuff to Ezra sometimes before he responds. From my own experience and having watched Ezra for a long time now, I assume he's overstimulated by other input and that makes it harder for him to react to verbal/auditory input. It does not mean he does not hear everything you're saying to him, it just takes him longer to respond. This still often happens to me, too. I would also always assume that he understands everything you're saying to him, within his intellectual abilities. Even when I could not yet talk, I understood what people said to me, I just could not respond with words. Also, I love that Simon diligently picked up the Cheerios he spilled and cleaned up the little mess he made all by himself. And of course the improvement in Simon's verbal skills is amazing! It must feel great to see him take such big steps in his development and that would not have happened without the support you are giving him! Keep doing what you're doing!❤
As for the suits, Ezra's and Mark's are my favorites! Everybody's looking good, but those two are stealing the show in my opinion😉Do you guys have a favorite?

Probably Simon or Mark get's the trophy this time. :) See you soon on an ASD Call! Thanks again! Much ❤️.

When I was growing up my parents and teachers often needed to repeat things to me. My mother describes it as me being stubborn when I was younger but I think it was probably either being too focused on what I was doing to notice that someone was talking to me or (in other instances) delayed processing.
There’s a pretty good chance that my description is more accurate than my mother’s because I was level two when I was growing up (I’m level one now). When I was younger, delayed processing, sensory sensitivities, etc. were not mentioned by either my sister’s doctors (my sister is level one and always has been) or mine. Instead they only mentioned certain aspects of autism like being very focused on routines (as depicted in some of the movies that were popular back in the 1980s) and the difficulties with adjusting to changes in routine.
This more or less sums up my observations and recollections on this for now.

      Also regarding physical therapy:
Adaptive PE is part of that but by itself it is not usually enough.
For example, when I was in school in the 1980s I had adaptive PE (which mostly involved tossing bean bags back and forth and bouncing a ball). It did help somewhat with my coordination and muscle tone but it wasn’t enough.
I probably should have had one or two appointments per week with a physical therapist and a speech therapist as well (at the very minimum).
To this day I still tend to drop things a lot and my rs still come out sounding like ws.

It looks like Ezra is starting to understand the concept of being a big kid. I’m guessing that he probably wanted to prove to you that he is a big kid after Simon was crying about the “broken bus” and needed some comforting and he presumably saw this from his safety bed. That’s probably why Ezra decided to use the potty independently this time.
As Ezra’s communication skills improve you can learn about his understanding of certain concepts like “baby”, “toddler”, “big kid”, “brother”, “sister”, and certain other miscellaneous concepts whether he uses the iPad or some other method for communication at that point in time.

Ezra’s delayed processing when his jacket is being put on reminds me a little of Simon’s delayed processing from back when you were visiting the national parks.
On the subject of Simon and his PDA I wonder whether some of his doctors might have erroneously attributed Simon’s delayed processing to PDA instead of autism. It wouldn’t surprise me because sometimes even medical professionals will assume that a patient is being intentionally difficult or defiant even when that is not the case.
That being said Simon might have PDA, it would explain at least a couple of the temper tantrums that he had over the last couple of years. Even so he probably has more autism meltdowns than tantrums (based on how noticeable his sensory sensitivities are (including in this video)).

On the subject of potty training it’s good that Simon is trained during the day. If you wish to keep him as trained as possible during the day you might want to have him change out of his pajamas and having him wear underwear under his clothes for breakfast so that he has an incentive to begin holding it first thing in the morning. He’s four years old now, he should be able to begin working on that. Don’t expect perfection. There’s bound to be some mishaps/mistakes even with Simon being (at least essentially) daytime trained since at least November. That’s especially important with it being close to Summer. Many kids tend to regress a bit during the Summer. In addition with Ezra coming along with his own toilet training Simon might get jealous and that might also cause some regression in one or more areas (including daytime toilet training).
Don’t be surprised if Simon and/or Ezra have some accidents (of either or both kinds) at the breakfast table especially early on during this transition. It’s nothing to worry about (and doesn’t really count as misbehavior (especially in the beginning)) and it’s all part of the process.
Maybe you can have an outfit that Simon can wear specifically for breakfast. Maybe it can be a specific pair of sweatpants (with underpants underneath instead of a diaper) and a shirt that will be easy to clean/easy to wash in the event of spills and other unforeseen events. You might also want to do this with Ezra as he progresses more with his own toilet training and gets even better at feeding himself.
After breakfast they can then change into the clothes that they will wear for church and be ready for that part of their day.
Also don’t worry about the fact that Simon is still spilling his cereal. I’m well into my 40s and I still spill cereal sometimes (for various reasons).

Is Ezra able to confidently use the potty on his own? Potty training is most challenging for us with a 5 year old on the spectrum. The wee in the toilet has been mastered but there are great challenges to get no.2 done in the toilet, not sure why. So diapers or accidents is what we're still dealing with now. I remember reading somewhere that it’s pretty common for kids with ADD/ADHD to be left-handed.
Being right-handed and coming from a family of right-handed people it never occurred to me to consider that Ezra might be left-handed.
Now maybe you can work on having Ezra color with his left hand and maybe try using his left hand for some basic writing activities/writing exercises. Who knows? You might get some results this way.

Great question!🩷🩷Many parents and caregivers ask themselves that same question. What will my child’s life be like when they’re older? I wish I had the answer. I wish I had the answer for my own son, Ezra. Ezra is eight years old and he is still nonverbal. His favorite thing to do is to go into the refrigerator and eat all the cheese. But I do know something that has helped me as a mother of two autistic kids. I try to focus on helping them become the most independent person they can be. That will look different for each child, of course. My son Simon has already Learned to be quite independent. He can take his shoes on and off he can get dressed. He can brush his teeth. He can make a bowl of cereal for himself. But my son, Ezra, we are still potty training him. It’s important to be patient and loving unconditionally with these kids. And the support looks different for each child. Hope this helps!❤️❤️

@@7AheadfamilyRegarding independence if Ezra’s toilet training takes longer than expected don’t give up on training him and don’t put it on pause either but you might want to begin teaching him how to change himself after an accident. In addition if you have him wear diapers in certain situations like at night and on long car rides you can work on teaching him how to put on his own diapers.
I learned how to do this back in the early 1980s while I was still in preschool. The technique I learned was to put the diaper inside my underwear, pull the underwear up all the way, roll the waistband down, and then put each tape into position one after the other. From what I have read on various web sites many of today’s diapers use Velcro (or Hook and Loop fasteners) instead of tape, but the same basic principle applies.

From what I have read the FDA considers it experimental and it is not recommended at this time.
Medical web sites in other countries (such as Australia) also say that it is experimental and they do not recommend it.

We actually just ordered him pajamas that had been delayed in the mail and got here just one day after filming this video. You are right those pajamas were very small, we got him new ones. He has been growing so fast lately, we need to do better keeping up.
