1965 Ford Mustang Dealer Introduction - a new Sports Car

  • The 1965 Ford Mustang was introduced to dealers through this compelling short film (dealer information presentation). A stampede of horses sets up the film to let the dealers know all about the new sports car, the 1965 Ford Mustang, that will be hitting their dealerships. As the horses race down the road the Mustang sports car speeds by - taking curves easily on mountainous roads, doing family car rides , dropping kids at school, pulling into the driveway, and showing off the new sports car to friends who had the Ford Thunderbird or other cars.
The 1965 Ford Mustang was touted as a new concept designed to "appeal to all classes and income brackets." This 1965 Mustang sports car came in a hard top or as convertible car, with special touches even in the basic model like: front bucket seats, deep pile carpeting, a sports car steering wheel, custom wheel covers, arm rests, a courtesy lamp, sun visors, cigarette lighter, ashtrays, and curved side window glass. Both the Mustang hardtop and Mustang convertible are shown as being a comfortable car for mom, dad, or the younger set - college kids, youth, young families. The marketing seems to have worked!

For comparison. Boring 4 door Chevy II and the too small and air cooled rear engine Corvair. The swingers had the Mustang. Of course the Chevy II was more practical and the Corvair had its fans. And this film was not for the general public, it was for Ford dealers. 🙂

Classy ,classy ads ....I'm 60 now and would have been 4-5 years old when this was made and also live in Australia but these seem to be gentler and more kinder and respectful times ..Just for that alone I absolutely love re living these ads . The irony is that at the time of introduction, no one (including Ford) had any idea what a monster sales machine this care would become. I've read that Iaccoca was hoping for 150K units. They ended up selling over a million for 65 and 66 combined.

Even more impressive is the 1960 Ford Falcon platform itself! The Falcon, alone blasted past Corvair and Valiant in the first run of the "Big three" compact cars, And then goes on to provide the base for the Ford Fairlane,Mustang,Maverick and Granada. The Mercury Comet,Cougar and Monarch and Lincoln Versailles. - 1960 to 1980 on the same platform! Even as a GM guy, I have to stand in awe at that!

The rarest Mustang I've ever seen is the O5C ( built March 5th 1964 ) Raven Black hardtop made especially for Henry Ford 2. It's still around. Prototype 289 Hi-Po, Top Loader 4 speed, power steering, power brakes, GT exhaust tips, prototype door panels and leather interior, leather roof covering, one-of-a-kind steering wheel. This thing is the bomb ! Mustang Monthly has written articles about it over the years...

@@shaggydogg3786 Yeah people back 289's with modern 5 speed transmissions that bring the revs down, that works. You could put a stock 2:80 rear gear in an early hi-po mustang but it defeats the purpose on the street although highway it would be better. I have a 63' Galaxie with a 390 FE and a three speed auto. Has factory 3.00 gears in the back. Very quick on the street for such a heavy car and highway revs are low. The Mallory Uni-lite ignition and 50,000 volt Mallory coil helps in addition to a Mallory circuit guard running between the two. The old generators and maybe alternators would burn out distributor condensers with voltage spikes.

Got my 66 mustang new. Almost identical but for a nicer dash with round dials. Lots of fun, with standard trans and 289 v8 2bbl. Sold it in 2001, with 98000 orig miles, pristine condition. Note in this video, they sag at the back. Very soft leaf springs, so mushy handling. Fixed very successfully the first year with cheap lifting leaf spring boosters from Woolworths to level the car and firm up the suspension! Funny to hear the ad about large trunk. Yes, if you travel without the spare! They could easily have made a well for vertical storage behind the tail light, but they chose to attach it horizontally, so it ate half the trunk space. One suitcase beside it, and that was it! Very poorly made. Within first 5 years, ignition switch fell apart while traveling, pot metal door lock housing fractured, (got a used one, and with tweezers, transplanted the cylinders from broken one to match my key), transmission bearing failed, the bushings pressed into the bracket that the pedals swing on fractured, so had to replace the bracket, killing my back. Rad top seam burst, trunk latch broke (found a used one, but no mustangs around, so got it off a wrecked 65 Caliente!) . They had no plastic front fender liners, so the wheels throw salt slush at the underside of the top panel, rusting it through quickly. Easy to work in engine compartment EXCEPT to replace heater hoses. All other cars had the heater hose brass nipple come thru the firewall, but in this car, the hose clamps are hidden between the heater box and the inside of firewall! But, fond memories! :)

Yep, I had a plain jane 66, no added extras. Third gear would not hold, so transmission would pop out of third. I used a bungee cord to hold it in place when I was on the freeway. Finally got it fixed on the second try, I think it was bad synchro. Had the car in SoCal so no rust problem. Bought it in 1971 for $600, sold it in 1973 for $600. Don't imagine it is still on the road.

Preproduction car. The inner door latch where the data plate is supposed to be is higher than it is on production cars and no bars flanking the horse and corral in the grill either. Interesting though, as related in the Bob Fria ' Mustang Genesis ' book, many of the first preproduction cars were given VIN numbers and consequently sold rather than being scrapped as is custom in addition to actually having been equipped with parts from Comets and Fairlanes. If you like early 64' Mustangs, that book is a must to read...

Not very well. Good catch. I had a 66 with the three speed manual, it had a rubber boot, not a fixed shaft that obviously does not move. Prototype I reckon.

Ford Mustang horse was designed and sculpted at international fiberglass by Bill Swan,Ford paid him 100 for horse and he got a Thank you card from Edsel Ford this is the same exact horse the emblem was copied from but the man who made the emblem worked at Ford so he got full credit.

What we have here is a dealer information presentation. The idea is to help the dealer sell the automobile. The automobile the dealer will be selling is the Mustang automobile. The Mustang is a small sporty automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company (often simply called Ford). The Ford Motor Company bears the name of its early 20th Century founder, Henry Ford, who conceived of the assembly line method of automobile manufacturing. The more of these Mustang Ford automobiles the dealer sells the more money he and the Motor Company will make.

How could Ford get it so wrong with the Edsel and then so right with this?

    • @artistmac
      @artistmac 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ford didn't get it wrong with the Edsel. It was introduced into the teeth of the '58-'60 recession that eventually killed another medium priced car (DeSoto) and sent sales of every car company except Rambler into a downward tailspin. The Mustang was introduced in the middle of a booming economy that didn't stop growing for nine straight years. The much maligned '74 Mustang II, with its 4 and 6 cylinder engines, was almost as big a success when it was introduced during the '73-'74 gas shortage and the resulting gas price hike and recession. It sold 380,000 cars that year, as many as the '74 Camaro, Firebird, Barracuda, Challenger and Javelin -- combined.

@@artistmac Well researched and spotted! I'd say that Einstein's explanation of insanity applies with the Edsel. Insanity is conducting the same experiment over and over while knowing what result will be, yet still expecting different results. I interpret this as constantly plugging and advertising the Edsel! 🤔

In many respects, the Edsel was ahead of its time, however the styling- especially the grill was just plain ugly. And they could’ve had a different name to it other than a Ford relative.

Actually, the Mustang initial sales strategy was to target women. The Ford brain trust thought it would appeal to working women and that a six cylinder engine would be all the power they'd want. They were right initially but it soon became a boy's toy and V8's took the sales lead.
