    This song is about the sacking of Rome in 1527. The Habsburg militia got stiffed monetarily by their lords so they sacked Rome to steal all the booty. In the event known as the Last Stand of the Swiss Guard, the Swiss, alongside the garrison's remnant, made their last stand in the Teutonic Cemetery within the Vatican. Their captain, Kaspar Röist, was wounded and later sought refuge in his house, where he was killed by Spanish soldiers in front of his wife. The Swiss fought bitterly, but were immensely outnumbered and almost annihilated. Some survivors, accompanied by a band of refugees, fell back to the Basilica steps. Those who went toward the Basilica were massacred, and only 42 survived. This group of 42, under the command of Hercules Goldli, managed to stave off the Habsburg troops pursuing the Pope's entourage as it made its way across the Passetto di Borgo, which was a secret corridor that still connects the Vatican City to Castel Sant'Angelo.

      In case you read this Billy - here's some fun tidbits about the Winged Hussars:
      In 1605, at Kircholm, 3700 Polish, including some 1700 Hussars, faced 12000 Swedish troops. The Swedish lost 9000 men, Polish losses were some 100 dead, and 200 wounded.
      In 1610, at Kłuszyno, 5800 Polish fought 35000 Russian, and mercenary troops (about 5000 of those were mercenaries). After killing 9000, and routing the rest off the field, the victorious Polish forces (minus the 300 men they lost) went on to capture Moscow (the only force in history to acomplish that feat), and proclaim the Poolish King's son as the new Tzar.
      At Hodów, 400 Polish (including 200 hussars) defended against 40000 (no, that's not a typo) Tatars. After the battle, the victorious Polish forces, recovered several wagonloads on undamaged arrows (the damaged ones were beyond counting, especially after the Polish have taken to using arrowheads as ammunition when they ran out of bullets).
      And the Winged Hussars were the SECOND most terrifying Polish cavalry unit...

      @@springerjkreb nothing happened to the military tradition - have you heard about Monte Cassino? Or Battle of Britain? How about the defense of the City Hall in Karbala? And let's not forget the Battle of Warsaw in 1920 (as a matter of fact, the 100th anniversary of that is tomorrow, August 15th) - saving the entire western world from communism.
      As for the "getting ran over by various powers", we have a joke here, that the meaning behind the colour of our flag is thus:
      White symbolises Purity, and Honor
      Red symbolises Sacrifice
      Blue symbolises dependable allies.

I sat on the far end of stage left, and got chills when I saw that tank with "Audie" written on it. Then, they started playing, and that was that! I love the band and their music. You have to react to Sabaton Hearts of Iron it's about the Defence of Berlin.

    • @DShiflet01
      @DShiflet01 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not really about the defense of Berlin itself. It's about a Walther Wenck, a tank commander in the 12th army who was ordered to defend Berlin, but realized it was hopeless, so instead he led his force to break through the Russian lines surrounding Berlin in in order to open a corridor to the Elbe river, across which were the American forces. The 12th held the corridor open to allow the civilians and the remnants of the 9th army who had joined up with them a way out of the city where they could surrender to the US forces rather than risk death or capture by the Russians. Wenck himself was one of the last to cross the Elbe, and his actions are credited with getting tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians alike alive and out of Russian hands.
