Well, technically the move controlers are not necessary. What is necessary is the ps 4 camera, the head mount, the ps4, and at least 1 dual shock 4. But the ps move will enhance the immersion. I went ahead and google shopped the camera and the 2 move controllers for a reduced price, but they will also be available in a bundle with the headset at 500 bucks. @iMushyRoms - I never said anybody copied anything, technology is about progress, hence Move is basically an enhanced Wiimote, Kinect is basically an enhanced EyeToy. Equally, having an idea is not enough, we don't buy the ideas we buy products. Richard Marks admits they couldn't take the object tracking idea any further, hence it wasn't used in EyeToy games. Wii came along and showed Sony the solution, instead of a webcam doing ALL the work, put most of the motion sensing INSIDE a wand.
I have a Move controller, I use it whenever I can. It makes inFamous 2 sooo much better, it makes lightgun games like House of the Dead 3 and 4 possible(hell, even better than the arcade versions) and it can improve first-person shooter games when implemented properly. The Move controller kicks ass. The developer support of the thing, though... definitely lacking. Hopefully Sony packs a Move controller with each PS4, that way developers can utilize it to the fullest.
The original PlayStation Eye functions like Kinect. You don't need to have a controller, but unlike Kinect, it lacks infrared sensor and a 3D camera, so it doesn't accurately track your depth. That's why they introduced the Move controller.
@Tommyfungun You need the Eyetoy (camera) and the PS move controller. The PS navigation controller is optional. The important one is the move controller. The one with the shining light-bulb.
I love my Playstation3 with move, you can't do wrong with a game like "Medevil Moves Deadmends Quest. You only need one motion controller, and the controls feel very precise as compared to other games. best game yet.
@callmechamp10 It was still the first form of motion type of gaming, like the wii, the move, kinect, and Eyetoy. So for all of you who say Sony did this kind of thing first, your argument fails
@skankinruby - Incorrect. Richard Marks was ONLY interested in webcam tracking in 2001, hence the Eyetoy in 2003. Object tracking was just research, if it worked well enough with a webcam, then it may find a use in EyeToy games, but it didn't. Wii came along and showed Sony the solution, instead of making the webcam do ALL the work, put as much of the motion tracking as you can INSIDE THE OBJECTS, i.e. the wand. That's how Move came about. And I don't call it copying btw, I call it progress!
@omgitsadriel If I remember correctly the original Playstation EyeToy was for the playstation 2 and was must motion control (this was like back in 2003). There are some developer videos out there where they mention that they kept running into limitations that restricted the games to be like minigames. They also found out that people were more interested in the demos where they were interacting with objects so they went in that direction using controllers in addition to the camera
Actually that guy you replied to is right. Playstation had the move in development before the wii was even released. Even the eyetoy itself was out before wii.
@Zeetana1 1. with some games like the fight light's out. 2. the ps3 supports 4 move controllers or 2 move controllers and 2 navigation controllers. 3. no you can use the dual shock 3. 4. no.
@NoiThinkiWillStay - Technology is mostly about progress, it's about taking old/current tech and improving it, making it faster, more powerful, more capable and yet often it's cheaper too. I doubt there's any tech in our homes right now that is completely original, it can all be considered 'rip-offs' by such logic. Hence no-one ripped off anyone, Move is basically and enhanced Wiimote and Kinect is basically an enhanced EyeToy, and we gamers should just enjoy what they have to offer us. :)
Incase anyone hasn't noticed, sony got the idea of a moving console before nintendo or microsoft. Go on wikipedia and you'll see in plain writing that the research of this console began back as early as 2001.
@Tommyfungun No problem! Oh, just another point I forgot. A lot of games make use of 2 PS Move controllers rather than just 1. The UFC game is better with 2. The navigation controller is really more for the shooters.
@skankinruby - The pitch "You are the controller" was aimed at casual gamers only, hence the casual Kinect launch games, but yes, when devs shoehorn Kinect and Move into their games just for the sake of it, then it becomes a problem. For Forza, Turn 10 explain the idea of Kinect driving here and who it's for; /watch?v=BiewYJbUDF8 Hence it's really just for having fun with/against family and friends. Again, a good example because no-one is forced to use it. LBP2 is another good example imo.
Kinect for the X box does look sweet I will admit but I do think it feels better when you hold something in your hand. For example a sword, tennis racket and fishing rod just feels more real that you are holding an object. Virtual reality would be great but it's not perfected yet.
@tevisboe234 Check your facts, Nintendo has been working with sensor movements since the GameBoy, the Power Glove doesn't count because it was made from Mattel. @770megaman - I don't agree with the 'copy' or 'rip-off' claims because technology is about progress, hence Move is an enhanced Wiimote and Kinect is an enhanced EyeToy. However, Move was not in production before the Wii. Google 'Nintendo Gyration 2001' to see how the Wiimote began. Back then, Sony were researching webcam object tracking (balls, wands etc), but that is not Move. Move started as a product in 2008, as it's creator Richard Marks says here in 2009 (at 4:41); /watch?v=tlDXIl619CQ

Back then, Richard Marks (EyeToy/Move creator) was only interested in webcam interaction, where he experimented with objects like balls and wands to interact with a webcam. I would say Move, reason being that you have more options like where to walk and stuff like that. With the kinect, all you can do is jump or move a bit of your body so your character stays in the same place :)
Actually, Sony was working on the PS Move's colored ball tracking system since 2001. And of course the Playstation Eye that tracks it was released back with the PS2. Nintendo uses simpler technology so they could release their product quicker.
This looks so expensive to get all those extra controllers... 1) Do you need TWO wand things for just one player? 2) And if you have only 1 webcam, how many of those wands can you use then? 3) If you got the wand, do you need a navigation controller as well? 4) Can't you play Playstation Move games with just the regular wireless dual shock 3?
Actually the technology that went in to this is different from that of the wii. The weird looking colored balls actually work into with the motion control along with a gyroscope inside the controller to make the tracking more accurate. And the development of this actually dates back to 2001 (don't believe me? Look it up)
, also upgrading the PS Eye to Kinect level tech (the 2nd thing I think they're actually already doing), while slooowly phasing out the aging Dualshock controller, with a cooler design (less like a cheap toy), then they'd have a cool package and real killer gameplay app next gen. Move 2 and PS Eye 2 could even work at the same time, and the controller could still play like a traditional DualShock.

2) And if you have only 1 webcam, how many of those wands can you use then?
3) If you got the wand, do you need a navigation controller as well?
4) Can't you play Playstation Move games with just the regular wireless dual shock 3?
Anyone here after seeing the new PSVR2 controllers? I am sooooo glad I don't have to use PS3 controllers on a PS5 to play in VR in a years time...
Actually the technology that went in to this is different from that of the wii. The weird looking colored balls actually work into with the motion control along with a gyroscope inside the controller to make the tracking more accurate. And the development of this actually dates back to 2001 (don't believe me? Look it up)
@TheTommy10200 the Eyetoy from playstation 2 is the first motion gaming with a camera... it was released on 1999
@marceloadazz1 do you know that Nintendo has been working with sensor movements since the gameboy?
, also upgrading the PS Eye to Kinect level tech (the 2nd thing I think they're actually already doing), while slooowly phasing out the aging Dualshock controller, with a cooler design (less like a cheap toy), then they'd have a cool package and real killer gameplay app next gen. Move 2 and PS Eye 2 could even work at the same time, and the controller could still play like a traditional DualShock.
@Makutaman27 Aside from it being more responsive you do know Sony was working on motion controls for current gen consoles before Nintendo right?
Soundtrack rocked!
@l4d2ArTist
No, it can only play PS3 move games. On those games, on the cover there is written PS3 MOVE FEATURES
I love to play Medieval Moves using the MOVE
