    Adjust the air fuel screw until you get the highest idle. Should be between 1 and 3 turns out from all the way in. Then ride it and adjust the screw in 1/8 increments until you get the best throttle response. Then set the idle speed screw. If the air screw is best less than 1 turn out you need a richer pilot jet. If best over 3 turns out you need a leaner pilot. After you set this then you can check your needle and main. Cheers

      2 1/4 turns out is the best for the mikuni carb on my yz125

      so with a open end wrench hold the nut and turn the screw all the way in(right). once snug loosen/turn(left) 2 1/4 turns. what if my screw wont turn unless the nut turns with it.

      Going out lowers idle going in brings it up the low jet could be wrong a lot of race bike they do that so they run a little lean for more power hint why you rebuild ever two races

    It's good to have your bike idle just enough to where it doesn't want to die. But folks, the main thing is. Two strokes aren't meant to sit and idle like a four stroke! They like to be wide open! Don't let your two stroke idle for too long.

    • @Thom1883
      @Thom1883 8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      +Garner Wilson lol I let my 250sx KTM idle all day and nothing happens to her, Just put in a new top end and the power valve was cleaner then a lot of 2 strokes. This whole 2 stroke should not idle bs is such crap. I've never had a problem with it.

      +Thom 1883 It's just more of a chance of idle causes fouled plugs, what ratio do you run if you don't mind? I had one and let it idle quite a bit and never had problems either. That was like 16 years ago though so no clue what I was running, I wanna say 32:1

      Yeah I been reading on a lot of forums of guys who do it both ways but out of all the guys who choose to not let it idle there are little to none of them that had problems when they let their bikes idle.. I mean obviously I wouldn't just leave my bike idle for long whether it is a 4 stroke or 2 stroke but I think its all just preference..

    It helps to have the bike warmed up using 5-10 mins of short on and off riding before you touch the idle so the bike is warm because what you will find is the bike will iddle nice when it hasnt been warm properly then five minutes down the road when its warm, itll rev quite alot higher than it did when you were adjusting it, but thank you this video did help me out on my Yam Yam too

  • @nuttysnpdg

    Generally with popular bikes you turn clockwise to raise idle and anti-clockwise to decrease... but there is A MIXTURE SCREW THAT IS IMPORTANT... Firstly set the idle adjuster so that the bike is at lowest rpm without stalling.
    Now to adjust the mixture screw - find another little screw that just goes into the carb. and doesn't hold anything on etc. it should be flat-head screwdriver, have the bike off and turn it in until it seats, turn it out 1.5 turns (1 turn is 360 degrees of the screw), start the bike and turn the mixture screw anti-clockwise until the revs get to the highest point (when adjusting any of these screws only move them a little bit at a time, then wait 3-5secs), if it has more than 3 turns from seated then you either need a richer or leaner pilot jet... if your mixture screw was at the back of the carb. (near the air-filter) that means it was an Air screw, if it was at the front near the engine it was a Fuel screw.
    Let's say your mixture screw had to be more than 3 turns out to get it to idle highest, that means if it was the Air screw go leaner on the pilot jet, if it was the Fuel screw go richer. A bigger number on the pilot jet means richer. Only go up or down 1 size at a time and once the new jet is installed, repeat the process I just explained.
    NOTE: When adjusting the mixture it was just telling us about the pilot jet, we WERE NOT trying to adjust idle at all... the reason you need to know about the pilot jet is because that could be what is causing your bike to idle rough... so check that first. If the mixture screw is less than 3 turns from seated to make it idle highest... then your pilot is correct, so go ahead and leave the mixture screw right where the idle was highest and fine tune with the idle adjuster.
    ______
    -- 2 stroke motocross bikes do idle smoothly but aren't designed to idle for more than about 1:30mins (some oil the plug quicker than others), it's the owner's choice of tuning that makes it idle or not.. tuning for more performance can sometimes mean the bike won't idle smoothly, especially if there are serious engine modifications. But if it just has a pipe and reeds etc. you should be able to get it to idle well.
    _______
    -- 4 stroke -- All this is the same on a 4 stroke carb. except they can idle for longer periods, typically you don't want to idle a 4 stroke motocross bike for more than 4mins though as it gets too hot, it needs air going over the radiators to keep it at a normal temperature.

    It wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure you're float adjustment is to spec first. And I like to warm the bike up first, before I do any pilot, and idle adjustments . A lot of things to consider when tuning your carb. Check your spark plug after running it at w.o.t , it will tell you how she is running just by the color of the insulator under the electrode. Just some friendly advice . Sweet bike btw

    a word of advise when turning up the idle speed get your engine running and hold the throttle at the target idle speed and screw the screw in till you meet the slide, else you end up with the problem i just had bike revs sticking and cant get a reliable idle speed because you drilled a shiny divot into your throttle slide with the rev set screw, open throttle screw in a tad release throttle and allow the slide to come to rest on the screw until desired idle is achieved, ive just had to dremel mine to smooth out a divot that was causing hanging revs or cutting out and now it idles reliably

    Does that idle sound close to perfect before he messed with it? I started on a 96 rm80, yz 80s, yz125s, that's exactly how we had idle. Barely able to keep itself running. If your hand isn't on the throttle turn it off. They aren't supposed to idle like a trail Enduro roach does parked in the woods

    • @colinchilds
      @colinchilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, although the manual does call to keep the lowest idle possible.. if it’s barely running or worse, stalling out on the track/trails it could be dangerous and an indication of a clogged pilot jet. This video is only a tutorial on how to adjust your idle on the fly to avoid those dangerous situations. Otherwise, lowest idle possible is recommended. But it still shouldn’t ever stall on its own. That’s a common misconception amongst the inbred community.

  • @bradhiggs1200
    @bradhiggs1200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What Is the point of jetting and when is it necessary?

    • @colinchilds
      @colinchilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jetting refers to how lean or rich your bike runs which just describes your fuel/air ratio going into the motor. If it's not set up right, you could be getting too much gas and not enough air into the engine causing bogging or fouling of plugs. Cameron Niemela has some good jetting tutorials to watch.
      The majority of bikes either used or bought from the shop are already set up for the area you live in and run well. If you put a new pipe on or make some other modifications you may have to check jet sizes to insure proper jetting of your carb.
      You'll get some similar results if your jets are clogged too so make sure they're cleaned out before making adjustments.

    Back your ideal out till your bike shuts off and leave it never let a 2 stroke idle ever it burns your rings quickly just start it with some throttle warm her up a bit and go

  • @mAdAsZaC
    @mAdAsZaC 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems you have it pretty down pat heres a couple of tips:
    when you adjusting your idle screw blip the throttle (sit on the bike) because almost every time you move the screw tighter then blip the throttle it will rev a little higher..
    you may also want ot adjust your idle mixture screw also when you get around to that (can do a video if you wish)

      top end rebuild

    • @colinchilds
      @colinchilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha top end rebuild??? Why does everyone jump to that. Sounds like your float is stuck or out of place which is pretty common. Sometimes it'll free itself. But yes, could also be the throttle cable and/or tube if you've got that too tight to the bar. I have no doubt you've figured it out by now since this is one year ago lol.

    Looking for a tip. I just got a 2020 YZ 125 and it just did this weird thing where it sputtered out like the fuel switch was turned off. I was running well, fuel on, no choke, then started to bog when throttled higher, then 2 min later, it just ran deal. won't turn over even with choke on. do I have to adjust something on a new one?

Or I have heard it could be reeds

    right = closing the airway
    left = opening the airway
    if your bike jumps forward when you put it into gear, it means the clutch plates are warn out. Or you need to adjust your clutch

  • @dr00andrew
    @dr00andrew 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    also a good tip when setting the idle is the position of the venturi. ***with the carb off the bike. your float level NEEDS to be correct before any of this
    1. take the idle screw and with the venturi raised up turn the screw so the taper is all the way in.
    2. drop the venturi back down so it sits on the idle screw and back the screw out until you see the venturi stop. then i adjust it so its not too high and not too low. when you look at the venturi from the exhaust side you should see a TINY bit of space between the front of the venturi and the exhaust port on the carb.
    3. while you're down in there take out the pilot and main jet and give them a good cleaning.
    4. take your idle air screw and back it out 1.5-2 turns.
    5. start it up and adjust the idle air screw until it idles strong
    6. then adjust your idle screw until it idles to your liking.
    the whole point is the venturi needs to be set properly while the carb is off the bike. if you set the proper height, theres no way your bike wont fire up instantly. carburetors can be very tricky to dial in, especially for beginners and something as simple as the incorrect float height will cause a machine with great compression and spark to run incorrectly.

    I am seeing that many of you are having problems with your idling. This video is absolutely great for the last step but is missing out some key points that need to be covered before idle speed is changed. I have a 2003 cr125 and will be making a video tomorrow at some point that covers the key points before you complete this step.
    If any of you are still having a problem with your idle and are interested then just pop over to my chanel in the next day or so and I will walk you through it. :)

    the way you adjusted it to be OK idling at a stop is not going to keep the engine alive if you break quickly or go down a hill. needs to be higher rpm.

  • @theELiTEboarder

    • @iminurpopcorn

      +the-ELiTE-boarder That screw simply makes it so that when you have the throttle closed, the throttle valve is open more. It just pushes on the throttle valve.

    Hold throttle lightly and then turn it

  • @pianodan763
    @pianodan763 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That is not an idle adjustment screw. You are messing with the air/fuel mixture screw. The "idle adjustment" screw is just the throttle screw on top of the carb. You adjust that which makes it like your throttle is being slightly opened.

      Do you have the choke pulled in? If the choke is pulled in then your fine it is supposed to do that that is what 2stroke and 4 stroke bikes do when they are started cold with the choke is in but after 30 sec of choke on put the choke off then let it idle and if it does not want to idle keep it alive by lightly applying throttle then when you feel the cylinder with your hand or put your hand next to the cylinder and you feel heat and it still does not want to idle then you can turn the idle up a little make sure it is warmed up when you change the idle and then ride it good( get in the power and a couple of times) then see how it is idle in then and go from there
