Sorry, long story. Back in 1992 I was a punk nosed kid from Oklahoma who had just graduated from highschool. By the end of the summer I found myself on a construction crew working on the now old Rangers Ballpark. Once the stadium was finished enough for the sound crew to move in. For weeks on end they blasted Copperline all day to test the sound system. I had to go get the album. Been a fan ever since.
I am unsure why this song tears and chokes me up. I suppose as we grow older, we look back at love and life, dwelling - even submerging ourselves- in our memories of times gone by, convinced that despite the pain of love and the struggles of our lives then, it was still that much better, that much more sweet. Bittersweet. Thanks, James.
I remember this was the first song where i really felt the music. My father was driving me home from work and i remember expressing how it made me feel. My father then bought this for me. Vivid memory driving up our street as this played. Mid 40s now and dad passed away. O can play this and it takes me back to that day....thanks for being part of something special that tugs my heart and has me remember all the great times with my father...i can see him as it plays....❤
I've listened to James since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Still today he's as smooth as frogs hair on a Saturday night. Takes me away to times I been alive & glad to be. Near always set my soul free. Thank you Mr. James Taylor, ty for helping another day shine on. Bless you.
Never ever get tired of listening to James Taylor; I was fortunate to see him live in concert in Saratoga, NY in 1990- it was magical; he will forever be one of my favorite singers
I’ve always liked James Taylor. Always. But there’s just something about the lyric in this song that hits me in a most reflective way - “Hercules and a hog nosed snake down on Copperline.” Every time I hear that lyric I go through a flood of childhood memories of what seemed like the most innocent, fun filled time of my life. Thank you James for what is for me a simple, yet profound, lyric.
First of all this is a soul stirring flawless live performance displaying the master lyricist true self. A masterfully composed bit of americana with a small essence of Aron Copeland overtones and timeless lyrics. Well done sir.
i've always thought "Copperline" was one of JT's best. Nostalgia mixed with the sad truth of so-called progress. A plea for respect for sacred places, but also a slap at that "progress". It can't run roughshod over memories. And the simple, yet wistful guitar and piano is all the song needs. Sometimes less is more, and in the end, the song has a transcendent power because of it.
I first saw you in Jr. High when my aunt (Austin Montessori guide/teacher) took me and my Mother to your very laid-back concert in Little Rock. Have enjoyed your music since. I remember the impression the concert had on me as I was surprised you sat in a chair on stage while the audience sat on blankets they brought on top of a dirt floor from recent rodeo. Feels like it was yesterday so special to a young woman. Thank you for sharing your gift.
Tonight my husband n I are going out to a fancy dinner for our 39th wedding anniversary. We both grew up loving your music, James. We’ve known each other since we were 3 years old. Thank you for some glorious memories. Thank you for all you do. You’re as fabulous now as you ever were. Actually you’re even more fabulous as time goes by.
@@attygarland6909 You don't need to be stunned or disappointed. James wrote most of his big hits; Carolina on my Mind, Fire and Rain, Sweet Baby James, Mexico, Shower the People, Something in the Way She Moves, etc. He collaborated with many songwriters over the years, including with Reynolds Price for Copperline. I'm not even a huge James Taylor fan, but I would say that James Taylor is one of the top singer/songwriters of all time. I mean, he was the first artist signed by the Beatles on Apple Records while he was still a teenager. If the Beatles think you're good, you're probably pretty good.
It is. You have to find the beauty beneath the outer shell. I live in the country just South of the VA line. I'll retire there. Lived there my whole life. JT's music has always meant a lot to me.
I was SO fortunate to see James in concert after this album was released. The concert was at the Woodlands, near Houston. The Cynthia Woods pavilion is an amphitheatre and our "seats" were actually on the lawn area. Ny friends and I spread a blanket out, bought some wine and just sat under the stars on a summer night. Such a great time, and a sweet memory of Sweet Baby James. This became one of my most favorite songs. Still is.
I was 15 when I went to my first James Taylor concert at a venue called Shady Grove in Gaithersburg, Md. He performed alone just he, his guitar, and a folding chair on a round stage. Every few songs he would stand and turn the chair a 1/4 turn and this went on for the whole show. It was wonderful. That was 41 years ago. His music is timeless and will remain that way forever.
I’ve got to agree with you, i never realized I knew who JT was until recently and now I’m addicted to his music, mom used to play one of his songs when I was really little on the piano and come to find out it was this song lol
That face, that voice, that guitar and those words are almost too much for my soul to bear. A fan since before I can remember, James’ music is the safe place for my introvert heart. Love this so much❤️
This is an incredible song, and the stripped down arrangement really helps it shine. I think that James’s first songs get so much attention because they featured the kind of arrangements that enhanced the songs. I wish he’d record more like this. It’s a beautiful piece of songwriting and the brilliant performance does it justice. Bravo!
Love this live version of Copperline! It's my favorite - just James, his guitar, and some masterfully blended support from his excellent pianist Larry Goldings. James' guitar riff on this song is one of his most distinctive, and like most of his guitar work, it is way more complex than it appears; it took me a long time to nail the riff on this song. Great work!
I love the blending of piano and guitar on this song. James' vocals are great and the song's story is captivating to me as I am also from N.C. Of course, it can resonate with anyone who listens as it takes you back to a time and place. Thank you, James for the journeys on which you have taken us over the years through your wonderful music!
Always have & always will...LOVE your amazing voice & music...have been listening to you since I was young...will never stop...thank you for all the memories!!!
One of the many things about James playing live is that no matter how long it has been since he first played a tune, it always seems like he is playing it for the first time and his enjoyment of that moment is eternal.
Stands the test of time. Had the privilege of seeing him with my oldest sister and when he sang "Shower the People" we both balled like we were 3 years old...
James Taylor captures something we all want to capture, and something we Need within our hearts, it's healthy and freeing.....we leave all else when JT plays, and are refreshed yet once more.......cheap medication, and pretty much no side effects.....
Quite a magical and transcendent voice which along with the timeless songs seem to bring such comfort and hope. I've never seen him so relaxed and so funny in a concert than this. Pure JT gold!
🥀Beautiful Song I love it. The S.C. & N. C s are Amazing to visit I'd love to live there. It's beautiful when it's a Sun shining or Snowy it's so awesome I go to take pictures there many times in my life time. Thank's for posting this video I love James Taylor he's amazing 🥀☝️🥀
Sorry long Time fan But first time visitor to your your channel. ..... You made me cry Man. I love everything you do. Thankyou, you help me with my sanity. Cheers
I saw him on this tour in Manchester, England in 2007. It was the tour where he had to reschedule because a huge drum machine was coming by sea and it was delayed due to the weather. I only got tickets because of the rescheduling, I was so lucky. When he did Shower the People with a choir including Kim, his wife, on a big screen behind him I cried. Gorgeous James!🤗🎸😊

Sweet home Alabama
The ride David Allen come
James Taylor is ridiculously good. He is beyond a master of his art.
The universality of this song: everyone has their copper line...and only James can make it real
Absolutely!
No better way to say it.
🐐
I could listen to him all Day! The Best! 50 years later and I still love him!

In all the years that I've listened to, and loved, the voice of James Taylor he only ever seems to get better. Just like a fine wine.

You are and icon and a legend Mr Taylor. Thank you for your blessings to the world of your music. It’s a bit of heaven on earth. 💜💜

The legendary JT is unique. A gift to humanity.
So echos my childhood it makes me cry (69yrs old)
Also 69, vocalist here. I am crying.
Haven't heard from James in a while. Was absent from the Grammys. Pray his health is good. God bless you and your family

One of his best lyrics. Very vivid imagery.

James Taylor, a genuine person, we are blessed.
One of THE best songwriters EVER! Thank you JT!
I was still stunned and disappointed to recently learn that many of his hits .. he did NOT compose .. they are covers of other artists' tunes .. 😯
While James has had hits that were written by other people (particularly Carole King), most of his hits were songs he wrote himself.

Amazing how well JT’s voice held up for four decades.
This guy is far and away my favorite artist along with Earth Wind and Fire of all time
James, you are so amazing…..❤
When that guitar intro starts i'm just transported in a happy place.
Oh yes..., those opening chords... so simple and so beautiful.
I never been in the U.S., but James makes me "miss" North Carolina...
Taylor makes North Carolina sound like the most beautiful place on earth.

@@tfaucette87 it reminds me of my home state of Maine. Similar terrain setup. NC is at least a little warmer!

Karen carpenter was another one with that beautiful hypnotizing tone
He is so humble and yet soooooooooo talented. When I want to smile, I put this on.
My absolute favorite JT song
