“It’s a strange reality of the modern popular song that the first time it’s played is when it’s recorded. Sometimes a song will be finished for deadline in the studio the day the thing is cast in stone forever. I know that songs and arrangements evolve and develop over time; that somewhere around the twentieth time it’s played for a live audience, a song finally completes itself. That, among other things, is what makes a good live recording unique. I’ve often thought that live performance means being well prepared and then waiting for the inevitable, unexpected thing to happen. We come onstage, well rehearsed and in good shape, and repeat what we have done before as best we can. But the real goal is to be in the present moment and on the surface of ourselves; open and trusting. Nobody wants to be perfect: that’s frozen, dead…It’s “be here now”, I guess…
Of course, @larry goldings does more than just accompany me. His growing presence in the world of jazz is well acknowledged, both for his own recordings and live performances and as a member of a good number of team efforts. I tend to form musical (and personal) relationships with other players and then stick with them for years. @Arnold McCuller and David Lasley have worked with me since the mid-‘70s and others nearly as long (Jimmy Johnson, Steve Gadd, Mike Landau, Kate Markowitz, Valerie Carter…)
After my great friend, producer and pianist Don Grolnick died in ’96, I performed with a number of excellent keyboard players. It was during the recording of my October Road album in ’02 that I worked with Larry. Russ Titelman had booked him to play on “Mean Old Man” along with Steve Gadd on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, Clifford Carter on synth, and the fine seven-string jazz guitarist, @John Pizzarelli . This was an incredible band, and after hearing Larry Goldings’ solo on that song, first time through, he pinned it. That was our introduction and he’s been my first call ever since.
Then there’s the bus factor. You see, someone’s playing may be great, but what’s it going to be like spending 10 hours a day riding to the next gig with them for a couple of months? Larry’s Bus Factor is not a factor for he is a bus riding fool, for a fact.
Part of his talent is his ability to “split his hands.” Though not as painful as it sounds, it does require great focus and skill to play a melody/accompaniment with his right hand and, with his left hand, (often on another keyboard) play a distinct bass pattern. This Larry can do with effortless grace, and he has made this One Man Band show possible. He is a committed father, brother, and son, and I am in his debt. I saw him outside a casino in Valley Center about this time. I had such a lousy seat that I never sat in it. I stood by the barricade the whole time. If I could play guitar and sing like anyone, I would choose James Taylor. Your guitar playing is deceptively difficult, your vocals are always on point and your lyrics are simply incredible. I could be as far down in the dumps as humanly possible and a song or two from you puts me back where everything is right again. I don't know when I first heard you, I was born in 1960 so it was quite a while ago, and I have treasured you ever since.

When my parents emigrated to Germany with my brother and me, in March1965, I lost all my roots completely, was really stripped of my background in a way, having to learn a new language within rhe summer vacation, thus, more or less, stumbling into a totally different culture....
Quite a few years later, I started to recall the music I had been listening to in the USA, and, do you know what, James ?
It was your music, along with Carol King's, Carly Simon's and Joni Mitchell's, that I couldn't get enough of, really !

His One Man Band show this comes from is great. We got the CD/DVD when it came out and it's a hit parade. His current wife sings in a choir and they contribute on several songs which turn out great. I've listened to this song so many times and still enjoy it. It came out when I was a junior in high school in the early 70's. Seems like yesterday to me.

I played this song after my groomsman's speech for my best friend who was also my groomsman and is now the god father of my daughter at his wedding. His bride came up on stage, put her arm around me and spontaneously sang harmonies. This must have been one of the most emotional moments of my life. My friend Christian is my best friend, and I am his best friend - same applies now to his wonderful wife; and NO song can depict this better than this gem.
When we were members of a Junior Choir, we used to sing this in our Guitar mass. Lovely song!

I met James at the State Fair @ the bunny 🐰 building.. I asked him if I could hug him.for helping me through my teen years.. and he hugged me like I was his best friend ❤️..met my children and was sooo kind...he sang this song to me@the concert... my Young son s will never forget it... This coming Thursday I will go to my School mates Funeral like me he was 67 years old it’s funny but as I get older the things that I begin to remember most are the times in our teenage years like when on a weekend we would end the evening at one of our houses listening to great songs on vinyl with James “You got a friend “ always being one of them.
